Vancouver answers from a Vancouverite

4 kilometres/2.5 miles. All taxis go to anywhere you tell them to - you won't have any trouble getting a cab from BH to Ballantyne.

Definately take a cab to Ballentyne Pier. You get dropped off at the port entrance. I made the mistake of taking transit there and not only is it a seedy part of town but the walk from the bus stop to the entrance was horrendous with 5 flights of stairs and luggage

The Vancouver Airport Fairmont is right next to the US Departures check-in. For a domestic flight, walk to the left (when facing the building) and you'll come to the Domestic Terminal. No need for a shuttle - a few minutes walk, tops.
Thanks! I figure that time on a city tour bus will be more interesting than going directly to the airport and sitting there. ;)

We are cruising in July, and I'm thinking of doing the after cruise HAL Vancouver tour and transfer.

  • Has anyone done the tour before? Comments?

The tour will drop us off at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport. I realize it is at the airport, but

  • will it require a shuttle to the terminal for a domestic flight?

Thanks for any insights!

You may care to post the question on the HAL and Alaska board....but somewhere in my rapidly deteriorating memory bank I think I have read that the tour is conducted by Land/Sea Tours (aka Vancouver Tours) who provide some excellent tours.

I live here so haven't done it, but friends have - and very much enjoyed the tour and convenience of being dropped off at the airport. YVR is a very nice airport and simple to navigate. Just a couple of minutes of walk to the domestic or US terminal.

If by original poster you are referring to Vicki & Bernie, no Vicki has not been active on this thread for a number of years. However she is still active on Cruise Critic. She and her husband cruise on Princess a lot and I have done several cruises with them over the years. As to has anyone read this thread from the beginning....well I suppose that I have read mist of it.

Has the OP posted on this thread after the first couple posts?

Can't find much new.

I've also read most of this thread.

Not sure what you mean by "Can't find much new." ???? People ask questions, the locals and others try to answer the best they can.

I have read through most of this thread as well in an attempt to gain all the information I can to prepare for my upcoming trip.

The "locals" who have posted offer great insight and I am really grateful for their time all of them take to post and answer our questions... Soooo THANK YOU! Very much appreciated!

Agree with both of these. :) And I appreciate that they ARE so willing to explain (and explain again) answering each question that is asked without a "There's a search button-use it" Thank you to ALL the Vancouverites that are patient, kind, and informative.

There are 4 threads that I am familiar with that have had the longevity of this thread, there is another relating to Vancouver, 1 on the topic of RomeinRome cabs and other on Fort Lauderdale. These threads for or some reason or another have been allowed to amass a quite a number of posts despite the fact that moderators did make an effort a year to two ago to shut down some older larger threads...I kind of thought at the time this one might get the axe but I guess someone thought that it was germane enough to allow it to continue...a decision I applaud.

Thanks. I first joined CC way back in 2002 while researching a Tahiti cruise and found so much great information regarding transportation, tours, etc (as well as meeting some great people on my first roll call), that I keep coming back to answer when possible as a way to 'pay back'. I'm sure it's also true of the other local posters here and on the rest of CC -- Not to mention that we're proud of where we're from and want to share it with others. :)

We will be staying at Pan Pacific Hotel one night prior to our Alaskan cruise. Can anyone tell me a bit about the "Fly over Canada" attraction. As far as I can see, it is close to Canada Place and the Pan Pacific, so I am guessing easy walking distance. Has anyone been on it? Any input?

Thanks.

It actually it is actually part of Canada Place. There is also or was an exhibit put on about the Port of Vancouver. Canada Place was Canada exhibit during the World's Fair in 1986.

The Pan Pacific forms part of Canada Place...so you are right there. Where the 4D "Fly Over Canada" is being screened is where the I-Max theatre was since Expo 86 but the theatre has had a complete re-make including the installation of hydraulics.

We were in Vancouver at the end of May and took in this show on a rainy Thursday afternoon. It only lasts for about 30 minutes at most. You are first taken into a room where you are standing and you watch a movie clip that is show all around you (in other words) around the whole room. That is maybe 10 minutes or so. Then they escort you out of this room and you are put in seats that resemble an airplane. You buckle yourself in and then they show the main show, which last for at most 15 minutes. You are literally flying "over Canada". The cost for two was just under $42.00. It was very good, just wished it was a bit longer.

Have you ever been to Soarin at Walt Disney World, or Soarin over California at California Adventure? The set up is just like that. It's a 4D theatre experience, equipped with special effects like mist and scents. Excellent show.
