Paying for ice cream sundaes

No, Mike, the problem is on most OTHER cruise lines, the ice cream is free all day and night with selected flavors. Princess IS a scam for the ice cream.

At least now you know it is not free at Scoops on Princess so you can plan your future cruises accordingly.

Carnival is the one with the machines. I think after 18 cruises now, I know which line has what. :)

Well not quite correct but maybe none of your 18 cruises has been on RCCl. Sailed on RCCL this August and they had a machine with only CHOCOLATE, VANILLA OR SWIRL ice milk/yogurt each day. NO real ice cream other than that ordered in the dining room.

Regarding the hour of ice cream each day in the buffet...we have found some Princess ships do offer only chocolate and vanilla every day. Others have two different flavors, rotating each day. So, really, it's possible that those on both sides of this discussion are correct.

Personally, I miss the many flavors/many hours of ice cream that Celebrity offers when I sail on Princess. But on the other hand, the prospect of ice cream for dessert or not until 3:30pm has my husband wanting to do a lot more lunches in the dining room, which I love.

Is there a full moon out or something:eek: , guys you need to chill it just ice cream. I personally don't cruise for the ice cream it nice but it's not a big deal if I have to pay for it. I'm just greatfully to be able to afford a cruise.

It would be nice if they had the self-serve soft ice cream and frozen yogurt dispensers that they have on Carnival. The only "selected flavors were chocolate, vanilla, and "twist". My guess is that if they did add them, they would lose a lot of revenue at Scoops.

Sorry, haven't been on RCI LATELY. But I do know Celebrity and HAL have free assortment of regular hard ice cream all day and night. Princess is just looking for more revenue with their scoops scam. I didn't say ALL other lines, I said most other lines. :)

Correct. Princess would lose their extra revenue scam.

I personally don't care either, but the POINT in this is taking it's toll on how some of these lines are really starting to nickel and dime people for regular stuff that should be free. Pretty soon, they'll start charging extra to eat in the dining room and only the buffet will be free included in your price. I would not doubt it.

The way some people carry on, you'd think ice cream is the most important part of the food pyramid rather than a calorie-laden, artery-clogging treat with no redeeming nutritional value. One which Princess already offers in unlimited quantities at each meal and for one hour in the afternoon -- how much more can you possibly eat? There's no obligation on the part of Princess to provide every single possible food item free of charge at every hour of the day -- if they did, imagine how much more you'd pay for your cruise.

You may need to research the word "selfish"

You are perfectly free to enjoy the shows and whatever else. That is one of the reasons there are different venues.

And if it is any of your business, I usually spend most evenings in the casino.:p

Mike:)

To each their own. I usually go to at least a couple of the production shows and perhaps some of the lounge acts. I usually don't go to the casino.

If you think this is a big deal, then perhaps you should stick with these lines. As I said, I'm a big fan of ice cream, but it's not a deal breaker for me as there are so many other desserts that tempt me on a cruise.

Again, you missed the point. It's not about wanting to have ice cream. I could care less. It's the fact that it's a scam on Princess when other lines give it for free and they just keep nickel and diming people. It's ridiculous. I personally didn't eat the ice cream that was free, it doesn't matter. It's the POINT that they make you pay for it on Princess and they don't on most other lines. How difficult is this to comprehend?

princess has been charging for ice cream at scoops since the early part of this century. at least since 2002 because that is when my family took their first cruise on the grand. we also have cruised on the island and I can say that there was plenty to eat any time of the day onboard for free. I really liked the buffet and the afternoon teas as deserts. I am looking to take a cruise in 2010 on the newer ships and really looking forward to it, and I can assure you that I am not going to let not having free ice cream 24/7 detour me.

As far as I am concerned, it is not a scam that Princess charges for some ice cream when you buy it at Scoops, the ice cream stand. I think anyone could figure that out by looking at the pricing board at Scoops. Merriam Webster defines a SCAM as follows: "a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation ". I don't think that having ice cream for sale is either of the above. Princess doesn't give you free alcohol either, but some of the upscale lines do. Some of the upscale lines also have all suite accommodations, and shore excursions included. Of course, it's not really free, you pay a lot more for your cruise.

I would think that if you wanted an all inclusive cruise, you should steer away from the mass market lines, and go to Seabourne or some other high end cruiseline. RCI used to have hamburgers, milk shakes, etc. free at Johnny Rockets, but now they charge for them,is that also a scam? It doesn't matter that you can get hamburgers elsewhere on the ship at no additional charge, because you can get ice cream elsewhere on Princess at no additional charge. All of the mass market ships have extra charge restaurants on their ships, but you can eat good meals in several venues on each of those ships at no additional charge, does that make those "special" restaurants scams?

But perhaps there is something that is free on Princess that the other lines charge for? I guess every cruise line has to prioritize what they include in the cruise fare and what there will be an additional charge for and I'm sure they base that decision on loads of research.

To each his own, of course, but I'd rather cruise on Princess and pay for ice cream at Scoops than to cruise on Regent Seven Seas (where I am sure ice cream will be free - but then I'd only get to cruise once every few years).

Nothing against Regent, that is. Hope to cruise them one day.

.

I really doubt it.

I just got back from my Carnival cruise. I have nothing against Princess, I cruise with them and will continue to do so. However, it was so nice on Carnival not to be nickel and dimed to death.

Carnival had ice cream sundae bars with hard ice cream several times during my cruise for free. They also had 24 hour soft serve ice cream & yogurt in Chocolate, Vanilla Strawberry & Twist. Again free. Lemonade, fruit punch, hot chocolate all free. In the dining room I could order espresso, cappuccino, latte or hot chocolate for free. It was so nice not to drag out my S&S each time for all of the above as I would have to on Princess.

I'm looking forward to my Princess cruise in December but I'm not looking forward to all the extra charges.

Every cruise line has its pros and cons but all the extra charges on Princess is a definite con.

My definition of a SCAM is that on MOST other cruise lines the ice cream is FREE all day and night. Princess and their scoops deal IS a scam.

You need to use the language correctly.............and learn the real definition of Scam......;)

scam (plural scams)

  1. Fraudulent deal. Business plan intended to defraud.

There is no intent to defraud you.......if you do not want it.....do not buy it.

Oh, I comprehend all right. You've got your knickers in a twist because Princess is so "ridiculous" as to keep costs down by charging for things that not everyone wants and hardly anyone needs -- things that, as has been repeatedly pointed out to you but you choose to ignore, are in fact available free at given times of the day. Yeah, right, nickel-and-diming. What Ever.

FYI, most of the stuff in the machines that are free, contains ice milk....yuk!!!!!!!!

Its frozen yogourt on Royal Caribbean - strange taste at first but somewhat addictive after the first couple. I do like the idea of getting something free such as the 'ice-cream' and the lemonade. However, the limited free ice-cream on Princess is much nicer and they plan to serve free lemonade on my next cruise so I will be sorted:D

Wow, this has proven to be quite a "hot" subject. For us, we don't mind paying the additional cost for the Scoops ice cream. We like to have a little more variety and have it when we want it. We just consider it to be no different then buying drinks. We have had the free ice cream a couple of times, but usually miss when they are serving it or when we get there the lines are to long or we don't care for the flavors. So for us, to buy ice cream once or twice during the cruise is well worth it. We are not big spenders but when we want something we want it, and don't mind paying for it.
