tbmrt Posted November 13, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2013 We hate to carry alot of cash, but are planning private excursions that require cash this cruise. I seem to remember going to casino or guest services to cash a check or draw money against our sail card. What is the best way to do this? Also, I've read that sometimes they watch that you actually gamble with some of the money you take out at the casino and won't let you draw more the next day or so if you do not use some of the withdrawn money to gamble. True? Perhaps using an ATM is the better way to go? I know they charge fees though and it may be dangerous at some ports. Thanks Barbara
Rare Essiesmom Posted November 13, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2013 The old fashioned travelers check is one way to go. They can be cashed at Guest Services without a fee. EM
Treven Posted November 13, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) When I've needed cash I simply use the ATM onboard the ship. Yes there is a fee assessed but I figure it's part of my overall cruise expense. Plus it's not something I need to do every day, or several times over the length of the cruise. I'm sure others will chime in with what they do. Edited November 13, 2013 by Treven

They have ATMs on the ships, so you don't have to use an ATM in a dangerous location.
cb at sea Posted November 13, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 13, 2013 I detest paying to access my own money....so we just bring the cash we think we'll need. Large bills are much easier to carry than wads of smaller denominations...and the ship will break them down for you, if you need smaller bills. Your cabin will have a safe, so you won't need to carry cash around with you. Whatever we don't spend, we take home and redeposit. Travelers checks are a good option, too...the ship will cash them with no fee. The ATM's charge a fee.....if you take the cash from the casino/seapass, there is a 5% fee..... Dcoy Posted November 13, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 13, 2013 If you plan on going the travelers check route, you may want to verify your ship will cash them. Some cruise lines have stopped accepting or cashing them. Don
Drop Box Posted November 13, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 13, 2013 I know the last time i looked it was a 10.00 fee to use the ATM on Carnival.

Cunard no longer has an ATM on their ship. You can get up to $500.00 per day on your shipboard account with no fee. We take more than enough cash for our cruise. Nitemare Posted November 13, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 13, 2013 Not all cruise lines have ATMs on board. And quite a few advertise them and they end up to be broken or out of currency.
marco Posted November 13, 2013 #13 Share Posted November 13, 2013 If we are going to the Caribbean, we always bring a minimum amount of cash and it small bills. US currency is readily accepted in the Caribbean. You don't have to bring a lot, as doling out cash is pretty minimal. everything onboard is on our "card" and major purchases ashore can be on a CC. Cabs, a coke, a bus ride, a not ships sponsored tour, etc is pretty much the only thing you'll need cash for. We always bring a couple a' hundred $$$$, in cash and bring about 1/2 home. paul929207 Posted November 13, 2013 #14 Share Posted November 13, 2013 Which currency are you looking for? Is it the currency of the country you will access the ATM? Most ATMs dispense the local currency.
navybankerteacher Posted November 13, 2013 #15 Share Posted November 13, 2013 Shipboard ATM's are a costly way of getting cash. If your ship/line will accept travelers checks, they might be safest. A good idea is to bring a fair amount of cash in large bills which you can always get changed at casino or guest services. ATM's in a number of Caribbean islands dispense US $ - I know St. Maarten's do.
