Nliedel's 7/11 High Rollers Crown Princess Review

I know I am leaving TONS out of this. I am hoping others on the sailing will come and fill in the blanks. It all ran together for me! I know I forgot the night of the living escapees, where it seemed one out of every ten woman was about to come out of her shirt! I think they lost their bras over the side! :p

It's not all roses, but for the most part it's positive and I am sailing her again.

7/11 Crown Princess Review

Here it is. My Tilted Ship Review. The tilted part will be at the end, so don’t expect it earlier. I will not highlight every detail, because it would take DAYS to read.

Overall. Until the tilting this was, hands down, one of the best cruises I have ever had. Just outstanding in every single way, in large part due to the company I was with. The ship was stunning in every way.

7/10: Flew down to Philly and met my roommate in real life for the very first time. Felt a little odd, but I’ve been posting to Carol’s stuff for years and felt like I knew her already. We are both funny and flexible travelers who don’t put up with malarkey. In other words, good traveling companions.

We had a lovely dinner with my Ironman training partner, Rhonda and I went to bed early. This was going to be a theme for the cruise for me.

7/11:N Woke up at the hind end crack of dawn. Another theme for me. I don’t sleep well on vacation. I get the feeling I am missing something good and can’t sleep. An Ambian helps. Showered and transferred my luggage tags to the luggage. This is my first stupid, “Nancy-ism.” I left my cruise documents in Carol’s house! It’s not a problem, but I felt like a moron.

We drove to a hotel where we boarded a shuttle bus for Brooklyn’s Red Hook Pier. We wended our way around Eastern Pennsylvania for a couple hours picking up other folks, who just happened to be Cruise Critic Members in part! Delightful to chat with them on our way. I was the only non easterner so people enjoyed pointing out the sights to me and telling me where we were. I still need to dig out a map and figure it all out.

We arrived at the Verazanno Narrows Bridge about 10:50 or so and proceeded to the pier. The day was hazy so the Statue of Liberty was a tad hard to make out, but then THERE SHE WAS! I was moved to tears looking at her. Stunning and a real sense of… I just cannot explain came over me.

We got to the terminal about 11:15 or so and dealt with my lack of documents easily. This was the easiest, most together boarding I have ever experienced. Two minutes and I was through security and up at the counter. The ladies there were nice and efficient. I waited to meet, “rude New Yorkers” and it was in vain. I consistently had the stereotype destroyed all cruise! Delightful people. Not harsh or rude or demanding in any way.

The boarding began by a number they handed you at noon. We were in the third group and were boarding the ship by 12:15 in the afternoon. Carol and I went right to the cabin, which was clean and neat and ready to go. Our robes were not there, but this was not a surprise. They were delivered later. I know I have the timeline wrong here, so bare with me. At some point we met Vicente, our steward. He is outstanding. He consistently remembered our extra towels and the gigantic bucket o’ ice we requested. Delightful too.

I called home and gloated a bit, then headed toward the food.

Now the days run together and if I try to do it by day, until the last day, it will be wrong. Individual reviews to follow.

The Food:

Overall I am going to give a nod to RCI here. The food was very good, but RCI is just a shade better. This is a subjective area, so hear me out. I was disappointed by the Horizon Court. Please NOTE: the different areas have different food. If you don’t see an area you like please proceed to another at any meal BUT breakfast (when all are the same). The food is good and the service very good, but not stellar in any way. It’s a Las Vegas style buffet and more along the lines of Luxor and Mandalay Bay than Bellagio. Most people would be pleased with it. I’m a foodie so you get that perspective.

International Café: People have been griping about the charge there. I found VERY few things charged (ice cream) and there is a list. It’s dead in the middle, but in general things in the middle round case and the Ice Cream case are charged items. Everything else is included and very good. They have Strawberry Shortcake Torte that’s TO DIE FOR! Thank God they only served it one day or I would have gained weight and not lost it. Excellent sandwiches there too.

I did not have sushi in the wine bar (additional charge), but was told, by several passengers, it was outstanding.

Dining Rooms: I am going to lump them together. They are all excellent and the service level is consistently high. A couple nights we got so-so servers. Good, but missing that special something you cruise for. Most of the time the servers were engaging, smart, funny and matched our needs for more or less attention and time in the dining room to perfection. I prefer breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room. When traveling with my family I always do that. This time I was with others, so bowed to their wishes (and they to mine as well).

The food. Memorable nights food wise, included the second formal night (the last night of our abbreviate cruise). I detest lobster onboard a ship, normally. This lobster was outstanding, both in presentation and taste. I cannot complain one bit. The Beef Wellington was delicious.

I’ve looked online for the menus to trip my memory, but cannot find them. Rats! Most nights I had fruit for dessert and it was outstanding. Just fresh and ripe, presented beautifully.

Afternoon Tea: It was outstanding. Do not miss this at all. Lovely music, delightful waiters, white gloves.

The Entertainment:

The entertainment was delightful. The Cruise Directors friendly and engaging, remembering my name (I did win a Semi Final Round for Princess Pop Star. Was not able to attend the finals because of the, “tilt.”). The first and third night Comedian, Richard Harris, was very funny with no blue notes. The production show did lack some of the flashy sets RCI is famous for, but that would have detracted from the singers and dancers, who were great. There was a singer I was not so fond of, but most of my party loved her, so I will not mention it again. I am going to chalk that up to me alone.

Trivia contests and poolside games were a hoot. Someone told me that they don’t have, “Those type of games on Princess, go to Carnival” with what I thought was a disdaining sniff. That person was wrong, they sure do! If you want to avoid them avoid the Neptune Pool.

MUTS: Too loud, too loud, too loud. Overall I do not like MUTS. Some LOVE it. I think it’s quite a distraction during the day.

Chair Hogging:

Well I thought I’d seen it all on a cruise, but no. Even jaded little ole me was shocked. One group had a stuffed Rhonocerous named Charlotte (we played trivia with them) who got her own lounge chair by the pool. Another man had a bikini’d blow up doll that got her own lounge chair, right by the pool. I worked out several mornings at six am and the loungers were already mostly full of crap. I was horrified. The cake was taken by a family of stuffed bears holding chairs, complete with “drinks” and books to read. I wanted to hurl the lot of them overboard.

Nickel and Diming

I read a lot of complaints about it and was prepared ahead of time. I did NOT feel dunned for money at every turn. I was careful about the things I selected. There was a lot of ice cream available for free at lunch and dinner in the dining room so no need to buy it elsewhere. I thought the prices were right in line with other cruise lines.

Ports:

Grand Turk:

Small and unspoiled. There is not a lot to do there if you’re a shopper. If you like to hit lovely beaches or snorkel, or better yet dive, then this is your place. Margaretville is nice for some people, with a swim up bar in the pool.

We did the clear bottom kayaking and the snorkel. Gorgeous reef structure right off the beach. Rocky bottoms so wear water shoes. Can’t say enough good about the clear bottom kayak.

Ocho Rios:

As always some bozo’s were arrested in Ocho for buying drugs. Just don’t do it.

We went with Peat Taylor and despite the shock of a flat tire (fixed in no time) it was wonderful. Did the Dunn’s River Falls climb. It’s a nice thing to do and I loved it. I was not hassled, but I must have an off-putting look. Others in our party were. Still no one came back hating Jamaica from my group. The difference? They took my advice and booked a tour. DO NOT just wander in Jamaica. This is not the US and one of the poorest islands. It’s lush and gorgeous and NOT for everyone.

Grand Cayman:

Are we back in the US? I see Pizza Hut. Sigh. I hate that. Must we Americanize everywhere we go?

We went with Captain Marvin. Some people in our party thought there were too many people on the boat, that is until they saw the other boats at Sting-ray City! They really pack em in. We did the half day tour that included snorkeling in Coral Gardens and the edge of the wall. I saw what looked like a black tipped shark and a moray eel peeking out of a crack in the rocks (I detest eels). Saw many sting-rays, until we got to sting-ray city. So superb! Just heaven on earth to be with these creatures in the water, almost a hundred of them. I draw the line at smooching on a sting-ray, but my roommate had no compunction about it and macked on hers twice!

Back to Georgetown and we shopped for ten minutes, before heading back to the ship. Our tender had an engine go out, so it was an interesting journey back. Turns out this was foreshadowing!

Port Canaveral:

The Space Center. What can I say? It was one of those, “Proud to be an American” moments that leaves you breathless. I did think they herded us like sheep (bah) and was not happy with that, but we had little time there. Everyone needs to see it once.

The Thing with the Tilt and the Screaming:

Lot’s of people have read my account. Don’t know what more to say. Crew? Outstanding. Perfect? No, but they kept us informed. My little group of people hung out and consoled one another. CNN called me. YES CALLED MY CELL looking for video. Sharks. Even if I had it, Debbie, at, ”Anderson Cooper 360” as not going to get it. I found her insincere and snarky. I did grant local interviews, but it’s over.

Was it terrifying? Yes, absolutely. Did I think I was going to die? Yes, yes I did. Thank god my husband and children were together at home, because if I had been hit by that TV I would not be here and they would have a wonderful parent to love them. Am I okay? You betcha. Still not sleeping, but I suspect that many of us are not. This too shall pass.

To the man on the Caribe deck asking me how much I thought he could get in a lawsuit, five minutes after it happened, shame on you!

To the lady crewmember in the suit asking me if anyone was missing from our party. Thank you. I hope your wrist is okay. To do your job I such pain and try to brush people off so you could help others… What a wonderful and dedicated young woman. I wish I caught your name.

To the members of Cruise Critic who are Doctors and Nurses and I personally know went to help in the dining room with triage, you are my heroes.

To the staff that got no rest and cleaned up THEN served us a lobster dinner. Bless you! To the passengers who put on their formalwear and decided to look good in the face of adversity. You made me smile on a bad day.

To the people who offered me cell phones and a shoulder and smiled while they were scared to reassure others. Wow. What an honor to have met you.

This was a bad end to a lovely cruise, but I booked her again for next year and I am taking the family.

I’d just like to thank anyone and everyone who made this one of the best cruises of my life until the last day and then who shone like diamonds when the chips were down. I am a dedicated Princess sailor now. Yes, I will still sail RCI, but Princess you’ve won my heart.

Does this sound all. “Ra-Ra” for Princess? Maybe it does. Still, the food was good, the entertainment excellent and except for one bad Cosmo (someone needs to re-train a bartender) I really can’t complain. The last day was atypical so I will not dwell.

Nancy,

Thanks for the honest review that is delightfully sprinkled with your little bits of humor and wisdom that I've come to appreciate through your postings.

I agree that MUTS is too loud but I wouldn't deny the venue to those who truly enjoy it. Easily avoided it twice on the CB - saw it once and then wasn't really even aware that it was there.

After reading reports and seeing film/stills of the damage, it is truly amazing that those who boarded the Crown yesterday have noticed nothing out of the ordinary other than some soggy carpeting :) .

Carpe Diem and be well, intrepid cruiser.

Chris

Nancy, thanks for posting such a thoughtful balanced review of your cruise. Thank goodness you and most on the ship both crew and passengers are okay. You are quite a strong woman, hats off to you.

To add to Nancy's review here are some quick thoughts about the cruise. Also, Nancy thanks for getting us back on track to focus on the positive aspects of the cruise. Sorry if things are jumbled or out of order, this will be random thoughts.

Embarkation - Relatively easy. We were on the ship by 1:30ish and luggage arrived shortly thereafter. Room was nicely made up and based on size, we were glad that we got an inside for the boys. Luv, luv, luv the duvets. I am seriously thinking of now getting one for our bedroom:D

Horizon Court/Cafe Caribe - As someone posted on an earlier review of their sailing, layout is not great at all. If you want certain items, you feel as if you are "cutting" the line to get them. Also, I learned the second day that you have to check all three sides, 2 in Horizon Court and Cafe Caribe to see the various choices of food. One day I went to Cafe Caribe side and they had fried shrimp, yummy!! If I hadn't checked it out, My family would not have known. We actually spent many of our evenings having dinner in Cafe Caribe. This was such a relaxing trip that many of us didn't want to "dress" for dinner so we had many leisurely meals here.

Dining Rooms - We had breakfast here most mornings and LOVED Atila and we planned on celebrating my Dad's birthday with him. My DH loves freshly made omelets so this was the place to be for breakfast.

The sailaway seafood buffet was just okay. The lobster claws and crab legs were extremely salty. We love seafood but it was just too salty to eat. We were bummed as we all love lobster and crab legs.

Coffee - Terrible!! As previously reported if you love coffee, order from room service, get it from the dining room or get it from the international cafe. In hindsight, I should have gotten the coffee card. After the first morning, I put the sign out for coffee every morning and we had coffee on the balcony.

Sabatini's - Loved it! I liked the sampling menu and definitely plan for a 2-3 hour experience. We planned to do the Crown Grill on Wednesday. Oh well.

Lotus Pool - Nirvana! Peaceful and relaxing. My DH fell in love with the current machine and spent a majority of the time here. We kept going back to the adult pool and saying that we were going to hang out there but never made it.

Art Auction - Attended the first day with my Dad's wife and promptly fell asleep for most of it:D I was on vacation!

Dance lessons - We tried the first day but never made it back again.

Jeopardy - This was a lot of fun! I played with my DH.

One evening had a very nice relaxing chat with Carol out by the main pool, I believe, near the Trident Grill. I was originally headed to the casino and my DH was going to go with me. He hates to gamble. We ran into Carol and she took me off his hands we walked around before finding a spot to land. I have to tell you, you have to meet Carol and Nancy in person. They are both funny, engaging and very interesting people.

Teen Youth Center -13-17 Yr Old's - I think this is an absolutely great idea. When I cruised on the Legend two years ago, there would be mobs of kids just roaming the ship. Most of the kids seemed to stay in the center or congregated near the center. There were plenty of activities for the kids and they had their own separate "patter" of events and things to do.

MUTS - I never noticed how loud it was but we did see a movie one night and fell in love with MUTS. It was so relaxing sitting out on deck and reminded me of the drive-in's of old. The next night we went to see the Beyonce concert but it started to rain so we just sat under cover and watched the show.

Afternoon Tea- This was on my "to do" list, never made it. The surprise of the trip, my son and his friends actually went one afternoon. They all said they enjoyed it.

Piazza - The entertainment in this area was really good especially the group SPANK. They sang acapella (sp?) and we listened to them several times.

Casino - The tightest slots I have ever encountered! The slots sucked up my money so quickly that I spent the majority of my time playing the 2 cent machines. I actually won my money back but it took awhile:D I was in there though when a woman won not once but twice. The first time $1200 on the slots and then $4000! It was her B-day.

Sarge was funny! We missed the Destination Anywhere show and caught the MotorCity show. Other than the "Superstition" # that I had some issues with, it was a good show.

Food in general - It was okay, some good some bad but the pizza and hamburgers were great! Ditto for the fries. Loved the fresh baked cookies and warm croissants from the IC.

Grand Turk - Good relaxing way to start the trip. We hung out at the beach for a bit. Son and friend loved Magarittaville (sp?) It was a little too loud for me.

Jamaica - Take an excursion!! We went with Phil Lafayette and the only downer was that we wound up waiting about 30 minutes for a family that was late. This significantly left us with limited time to shop and we did feel rushed throughout the tour. We did Dunn's River Falls and tubing. Because of the timing, we missed Fern Gully. If we had stayed with the tour we would not have been able to do shop at all. One thing, we made the mistake of not exiting by the entrance gate and wound up going through the gauntlet. While the vendors were overly aggressive a stern "NO" made them retreat. The funny thing is, if they hadn't been so aggressive, I probably would have purchased something. At the end of the tour we were not hassled for tips but did tip graciously.

Grand Cayman - We went with Capt Bryan's tour. LOVED IT!! I overthunk getting in the water (didn't do it) with the stingrays and although I enjoyed the excursion, it is now on my list of things to do again. Next time I will be in the water! Everyone had a great time and we only had about 20 people on our boat. I saw some boats that were just teeming with people and frankly looked unsafe to me.

Interesting factoid, there were no videographers or photographers on our boat. The crew were very friendly and made sure that we stayed together and had a good time. Once again, there was a party that was late so we took off late and hence didn't get an opportunity to shop in Grand Cayman. In the end that was okay for me, how many t-shirts can you really buy!:D Seriously, I was a bit disappointed because I like to buy artwork such as sketches to decorate my home as a reminder of our trips.

Port Canaveral - We took the airboat tour through Princess. Again, it was okay but I don't think it was worth the $69.00. We should have gone with the KSC tour instead.

Overall, up until the incident, we had an amazing and relaxing time and will always have wonderful memories. My family got to spend some much needed time together, I got to sleep late, my DH who is from Trinidad, got to swim as much as he wanted. My DS who is very vain at this stage with his braids LOVED Jamaica and Grand Cayman, commented on how much he missed swimming and snorkeling and needed to get back to these activities.

I found the Crown Princess to be a "R&R" type of experience. We all got some much needed rest, spent a lot of time on our balconies, we had Vicente open the divider. We played cards, chatted and just lounged alot. I did notice that the loungers near the main pools were very close together and of course there were plenty of chair hogs. We saw lots of empty loungers.

Like Carol, I saw the blow up doll and just shook my head. I saw it in various places on the Lido deck.

I think that's it.

Thank you Nancy and Deborah for your reviews of the Crown. Glad you could see some of the good that happened while you were aboard. Also wonderful to know that the crew seemed good.

Your positive attitudes were the BEST!!!!! Good vibes are so wonderful.

Just wanted to add that the muster drill and the Captain's coctail party were pretty informal.

At the Muster they didn't even take attendance but said they had accounted for everyone???

At the Captain's cocktail party there was no receiving line and Captain Andy just walked around meeting people. It was held in the Piazza on several levels and drinks and hors d'orves were catered around. I liked it better than everyone squished in a room drinking champagne.

I loved the Crown Grill but alas our reservation for Sabatini's was for the last night so we never made it. Will try next time.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Nancy,

Thank you for that nice review. If you throw out the tilt it sounds like everyone had a nice time. It also sounds like what I am being told there is not a huge difference between Princess and RCI. We are going to be on our first RCI cruise and that really is nice to know. Means more cruising options. And I do not have to get overly nervous about learning a new routine.

To answer a question. No there is not a lot of difference between RCI and Princess and that is going to irritate loyalists on both sides. Sorry bout that. I love them both. Sue me.

On another note. When you are in the elevator and you are chatting with someone and they mention they have a highlighter and you crack wise about duct tape ask them their screen name. That's how I met Hamptod!! (she said, "oops forgot my highlighter for the patters.")

Just curious...

Why don't people just pick up and move things from obviously "saved and not used" lounge chairs? I would have put all those bears on one chair and if someone said something, would reply that they asked to sit together:rolleyes:

And, if it's just a towel, I'd simply remove it. If someone walks up wet or with a fresh cocktail in a few minutes, I would relinquish the chair. But otherwise, I'd simply say there was no towel, with my best wide-eyed look.

Thanks for the great reviews, BTW.

Excellent review, Nliedel.

Although I have not sailed Princess, I have enjoyed your balanced postings on other forums here, so I clicked right to it when I saw you were on the listing ship!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I agree completely! To me, the two lines are more alike than different, with each doing some things extremely well and having some areas where they could improve. I have no hesitation sailing on either Princess or Royal Caribbean.

Nancy,

Thanks, my folks told me that, and they cruise often on both Princess and RCI. They also do Crystal. And they were the ones that said the two lines were similar. But who listens to their parents.

Thanks for your reports. I'd love to sail with each of you. My only suggestion for loud programs, movies, MUTS, etc., is rather dorky. We have sound suppressors that are generally used for target shooting - they take 23 decibels right off the top. If you see a couple of old fools (39 years old with a lot of experience) wearing them, that's probably us - please say hello. Nancy

I'm still going to find a way to go on a cruise with you and Carol yet.
We're going to hold you to that, Wrona!

At the Captain's cocktail party there was no receiving line and Captain Andy just walked around meeting people. It was held in the Piazza on several levels and drinks and hors d'orves were catered around. I liked it better than everyone squished in a room drinking champagne.
Now HERE I would give the edge to Royal Caribbean. At the time for the Captain's Reception, I went in search of the goodies. (ok, I was looking for the free champagne. As Nancy says, SO SUE ME. ;))Two different bar people said, "That starts at 7:45". I said, "But it's 7:55". I got two dirty looks.

Eventually, they started around with trays of (ugh) fruit punch and (ugh) screw drivers that had no discernible vodka and tasted like canned orange juice. My mother always told me not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I decided to pass up this horse completely.

Other than the "Superstition" # that I had some issues with, it was a good show.
I had the SAME reaction, Deborah.

Point here to Princess, believe it or not. I don't know if it's the facility, the youth counselors, or just the mix of teens who were on board, but this place seemed to "contain" the kids much better than the one on RC. That's a great place, too, but the kids rarely seemed to use it during the day. On Princess, they did. Now, on BOTH lines, the kids were hanging out all over the ship late at night, but rarely being noticeable.

Ok, who is this Sarge guy, and how did I miss him? I don't even remember seeing the name in the Patter.

The entertainment was delightful. The Cruise Directors friendly and engaging, remembering my name (I did win a Semi Final Round for Princess Pop Star. Was not able to attend the finals because of the, “tilt.”). The first and third night Comedian, Richard Harris,
Ralph Harris ;) Richard Harris is a dead Irish actor. :D
was very funny with no blue notes. The production show did lack some of the flashy sets RCI is famous for, but that would have detracted from the singers and dancers, who were great. There was a singer I was not so fond of, but most of my party loved her, so I will not mention it again. I am going to chalk that up to me alone.
We never discussed this, Nancy, but I didn't really think she was "all that" either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trivia contests and poolside games were a hoot. Someone told me that they don’t have, “Those type of games on Princess, go to Carnival” with what I thought was a disdaining sniff. That person was wrong, they sure do! If you want to avoid them avoid the Neptune Pool.
OMG, you should have seen "The Battle of the Sexes"! It puts the Sexy Legs contest and Belly Flop contest on RC to shame!

Throughout the day, there were trivia contests, Jeopardy, Passenger Feud, Princess the Price is (Almost) Right, Spelling Bee@Sea, more trivia contests...........I loved these. Ok, I'm a teacher. I like to use my brain. I don't lie out in the sun - I BELIEVE the medical experts when they warn us about the dangers of melanoma.

You guys really should have heard Nancy singing "Black Velvet" at Princess Pop Star. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This woman can SING!

I hope that you are never afflicted as we were, however, by an outbreak of falling-down drunk teens and young adults who were permitted to sing in the contest. :( (thumbs down to Princess for allowing this to go on and on and on)

Carol thank goodness you think that singer was not top banana. The way some people went on... I know Joanie said she was better a few years ago.

I was horrified by the drunkeness at Princess Pop Star. There was a young man... Ed. He was horrible. He KNEW he was horrible and he did it night after night. I cannot describe the awful of it. He thought he was funny. It was just humiliating. His mother got up and said she was proud. I tell ya what, if that was my kid... I am not saying this was someone who thought he was good and was not. He played the drunken fool and everyone was cringing.

I was in the spa waiting for my nail appointment. There was a mother and son across from me. The kid looked to be about 17. I know he was talking about the upcoming Prom next spring and how his mom had bought booze for it in Grand Turk. He said, "You know Mom, I'm becoming an alcoholic for rum." Her response? "I'll buy you more in Jamaica." I almost said something. I was good, but just about.

Other than those incidents there was not a lot of drunk kids or out of control kids. Not even a lot of drunken adults. They did open the bars the last night, and there were some bleary eyed types leaving the ship with me, but most people were great.

hi,

in reference to Superstition

cmon, how about the 3 lilly white Supremes, etc or how about the

Africa bit at the first show. As a New Yorker it had me kind of off guard for a moment. (oh my god, what were they thinking, but then again, it was an English ship,). I'm thinking that possibly this is a dance troupe hired by Princess and more than likely the origins of dance troupe 'might' explain the lack of...... 'color'.
