rannfar Posted July 28, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2010 So I was browsing on the "cruise rituals" forum and I saw a thread about door signs. It seemed like a lot of the people who were posting were cruising on Carnival and RCL. It got me wondering...is this common practice on Princess ships or is generally thought of a tacky? I told my DH about it...and he thought that a little something on the door could be fun, but we also don't want to stick out as Princess Cruise virgins (or cruise virgins in general). rdsqrl Posted July 28, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Lots did on my past cruise, which was over the Christmas/NY holiday. I've seen the occasional door decoration on other sailings, too; there's certainly no prohibition against it but it doesn't seem that common. And if it's a sailing with lots of pre-teen kids, I'd expect even odds on having something removed. But go for it, if you want.
Toto2Kansas Posted July 28, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Once in awhile we see someone with something on their door on Princess, but not many seem to do it like they do on other cruise lines.

Not real common but its done. We saw quite a few on the Emerald last week.

Go-Bucks! Posted July 28, 2010 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2010 my then to be wife wants to put a just married sign on the door - i dunnnnoo!!! I'm picturing lots of knocks, pranks, and interruptions with a Just Married sign. Don't think I'd want that kind of attention on my honeymoon. ;) To the OP: I decorate my door sometimes. It was fun to do at Christmastime. No plans to do it on my next cruise, though.
rannfar Posted July 28, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted July 28, 2010 my then to be wife wants to put a just married sign on the door - i dunnnnoo!!! that's what we were thinking about doing since this is our (slightly-belated) honeymoon! I saw one poster who said that they hung a piece of poster board on the door that said "Advice for the newlyweds" and hung a Sharpie next to it. I guess they got some cute little tidbits. Cruisin' Chick Posted July 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2010 We put a sign up on our last cruise. As it was a holiday cruise, many people had put up large bows, wreaths, kid's drawings. I wouldn't put anything valuable on the door as you never know when someone will take it.
Times Prince Posted July 28, 2010 #10 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Even at Christmas door signs are few. Any decoration on the door needs to be flat so that it doesn't get knocked off when either you or your steward goes in/out. There is a "mailbox" just outside of the door with room number and a place for incoming notices, Princess Patters, and advertisements. Those get decorated heavily during the holidays. We have seen the occasional tour group or family reunion group hang signs advertising they are part of the group.
kels2010 Posted July 28, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Who cares what other people think? If you want to do it, go for it. :) I hung a big Happy Birthday banner on our door last week on the Golden because it was our daughter's 11th bday. She loved it. d3661 Posted July 28, 2010 #13 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Saw quite a few cabin doors made to look Christmassy on Coral Princess last year over the holidays. Nice reminder of the season given the heat of Panama.
caribill Posted July 28, 2010 #14 Share Posted July 28, 2010 We were on one cruise where a couple who were into photography had a picture printer with them. They covered their door with pictures from the cruise. When the door was full, they started covereing the adjacent walls. The Cruise Director and many passengers would go by there daily to see the latest posted pictures.
Putterdude Posted July 28, 2010 #15 Share Posted July 28, 2010 It is done a lot over holiday seasons, birthdays and anniversaries. I recommend the the decorations be attached with the 3M Commander product as it breaks away when finished without marking the door.

If it weren't for the fact that my luggage will probably already be bursting I would absolutely do that!
AndyTheK Posted July 28, 2010 #17 Share Posted July 28, 2010 We were on the cruise last Christmas with rdsqrl and brought a pack of the stays-on-by-static-electricity plastic decorations. We hung the holly wreath and it was there for the entire cruise without any problem. At the end of the cruise, we gave the package to our casino bar waitress who loved having them. PS - makes a great way to find your cabin at 3AM after a long partying or gambling night. Shalom, Andy.
DMRick Posted July 28, 2010 #18 Share Posted July 28, 2010 Are the doors metal? If so we'll print our Christmas decorations on magnet paper.
caber Posted July 28, 2010 #19 Share Posted July 28, 2010 We did it at Halloween. Lots of doors were decorated then. One of our cc group also made us little signs with our cc group name on it and we all had them on our doors.
rannfar Posted July 28, 2010 Author #20 Share Posted July 28, 2010 PS - makes a great way to find your cabin at 3AM after a long partying or gambling night. Shalom, Andy. When you put it that way, the practicality of it might just outweigh my concerns about being "too tacky" ! I'm directionally challenged at home...I can't imagine how bad I'll be at 3am, on a giant cruise ship facing a loooong hallway of identical doors. :D
BARBYDOLL Posted July 28, 2010 #21 Share Posted July 28, 2010 We have used the magnetic paper for door signs on our 2 Princess cruises (Coral and Sea Princess) and it worked very well. We did find it useful to find our cabin easily!! Nothing too flash though, just a basic door sign (half a sheet of the magnetic paper) with a few bits on it from my card making supplies. Our friends were so pleased with theirs that they used them on subsequent cruises. We did see a few other door signs, but not many. Some were very fancy, others just basic. We did have our balloons taken, though. Barbara
OnVacation11 Posted July 28, 2010 #22 Share Posted July 28, 2010 The only time we decorate our doors is on a Christmas cruise. Lots of others do it too. Haven't see much of that during other times.
angyl Posted July 28, 2010 #23 Share Posted July 28, 2010 I put a laminated Cruise Critic Sign I made on my door (with magnets on back) and put a bright Hawaiin Lei hanging around my mail box. Did the same for traveling companions room. I loved my decorated space. I'll post a pic later.
Rare geoherb Posted July 28, 2010 #24 Share Posted July 28, 2010 I've brought door decorations for holiday cruises, including last March's cruise that included St. Patrick's Day. There were fewer door decorations on that cruise than on the Christmas ones we've done--but still several. I don't plan on having anything on our door next week on the Sapphire. We're not celebrating any holidays, although it is Happiness Happens Month and International Beer Day occurs on August 5.

I have a photo but it is not uploading. I'll try to attach later.
