HUBison2008 Posted March 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 17, 2012 DH and I want to get a balcony for our anniversary cruise next year. I've been reading various threads stating the wind would blow smoke onto their balconies. So is there a side of the ship which would help decrease the chance of smoke smell drifting onto our balcony? You don't mention which ship you'll be on. Some cruise ships no longer allow smoking on the balconies. If you're on a cruise ship that does allow it (such as Carnival) , it may or may not be much of a problem. Some non-smokers are more sensitive to smoke than others. When the ship is moving, there will be a good breeze that will carry most (if not all) of the smoke away from the ship. Whether or not you have a smoker next to you is really just a luck of the draw. I have even read of people on the aft balconies being bothered by the smoke from the ship's stacks. You might check with the cruise line you're booked on to see if smoking is allowed on the balconies, and plan accordingly.
Rare Essiesmom Posted March 17, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 17, 2012 Celebrity has no smoking on balconies. One of the outdoor smoking areas is on the port side of the ship, so a starboard cabin would be best. EM

6rugrats Posted March 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 17, 2012 Smoke will tend to drift back, so book a forward cabin on the port side. Outside smoking in other areas is permitted on the starboard side of all open decks. Not much else you can do.

deladypilot Posted March 17, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 17, 2012 I agree, you should try to get as far forward as you can. Remember that some of the outdoor bars also allow smoking. My DH and I are both smokers, but we try our best to keep others in mind. We always ask the people in the balcony next to us if it bothers them and to please let us know. We also try to limit it if they are outside sitting on theirs. That being said, not everyone thinks like we do. So go forward Best of luck

cb at sea Posted March 17, 2012 #9 Share Posted March 17, 2012 I don't understand the problem folks seem to have....we've never been bothered by smoke on the balcony, unless we're docked and there's no wind.....and if we "catch a whiff", it dissapates pretty fast...never been an issue. ShadowzBtlr Posted March 17, 2012 #11 Share Posted March 17, 2012 this is from a news post on the CC site: Disney Cruises Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is permitted on the starboard side of all open decks (except near Mickey's Pool) and cabin balconies. Where You Can't: Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas, including cabins. A cabin on the port/left side of the ship would be in a smoke-free environment. You probably do not have a strong sense of smell. For me it is readily noticeable (and unpleasant) if somebody is smoking in a nearby balcony - even while at sea. That is one of the reasons I sail primarily with Celebrity; they have a very restrictive smoking policy. I would ever book a balcony on a line that permitted smoking as for me it would be a waste of money.

paul929207 Posted March 18, 2012 #15 Share Posted March 18, 2012 If smoke bothers you that much, and you are set on a balcony, you should think about one of the lines that prohibits smoking on the balcony
Krazy Kruizers Posted March 18, 2012 #16 Share Posted March 18, 2012 We were just on the Maasdam which allows smoking on the balconies / verandahs. The cabin behind us had a cigar smoker and the wind did blow the smoke foreward!!

You are very lucky. Many are not so lucky. I don't feel " it dissapates pretty fast." For me and many others like me it HAS "been an issue." I don't care what people do on their balconies. I for one, do not care to have second hand smoke part of my holiday. I do not want the drug. I am amazed that Disney allows smoking on balconies. I hope that some day, smokers have a special lounge to enjoy their habit - and let the rest of us enjoy the sea air.
Gonzo70 Posted March 18, 2012 #19 Share Posted March 18, 2012 You live in Chicago, and someone smoking on a balcony at sea would be bothersome? Chicago has strict nonsmoking policies; no smoking in any public indoor areas - bars, casinos, restaurants, bowling alleys, work spaces etc. Not sure what was meant by your comment. Seems like a non sequitur.
isujim Posted March 18, 2012 #20 Share Posted March 18, 2012 Have been on three cruises with balconies (all RCI), and NEVER once did I ever get a whiff of smoke. I agree.......we have been on 23 cruises and only twice was it really a problem......usually one smoker doesn't bother us much......it is when you get 4 or 5 on the same balcony smoking does it REALLY become a problem......... Now the casino is another matter...........and another thread...........that to me is the worst.

griffy116 Posted March 19, 2012 #22 Share Posted March 19, 2012 I live in a major metropolitan city and the stuff you see on the buildings isn't the residue from cigarettes and you're inhaling it.
