Going to the bank asking for $1 bills

Leaving for the Pride this Sunday and just did my before-trip chore of going to the bank and asking for x amount of cash and $100 of it being in $1 & $5 bills. I always feel the need to follow it up with "I am going on a cruise" because I feel like they look at me like I am a pervert.

Anyone else do this and feel like they need to justify why?:D

If they ask you, look them square in the eye and tell them that you are going to a bachelor party on the weekend and need to get lots of small bills. :)

I do feel bad asking my teller to count me 70 $1 bills... but I also ask to note in my account that I'll be traveling in the Caribbean, and then the teller is usually eager to ask me about my trip and stuff. Which is great because I WILL TELL ANY AND EVERYBODY I AM ABOUT TO LEAVE ON A CRUISE WOOOO!

Heading to the bank for mine after work today!

Have fun on your cruise!

Holy Cow. What do you need $100 in singles for? The only thing I can think of is "room service" and the "port" guys that load your luggage on the ship. All of those singles would not even fit in my purse.

We get $100 worth of $5 and $1 bills and I keep them in the safe. We usually don't use them all but rather be safe then sorry. We get a pot of coffee every morning for the balcony, porter tips, piano man and other various tips. Also, I like to have small bills when shopping in port and we are visiting 4 different ports on this itinerary.

Why would you be sorry after being safe?

We actually got $2.00 bills from the bank before our last cruise for tipping room service or the people that handled our baggage.

Tipping in two dollar bills for ship employees is not a good idea. Many of the countries they visit and some employees themselves believe them to be fake and many stores will not accept them.

The way I have $1 and $5 bills for the cruise is that I "hoard" cash all year. At the end of each week when I get cash for the following, I put what I have leftover from the previous week in an envelope. I always have enough cash for tips, and the casino as well as being able to pay off our onboard expenses while onboard. I also save change and take it to the change machine at the credit union where the coin counter is free.

We NEVER take wads of bills...too hard to carry! The ship will break down larger bills.... Just bring a few 1's with you...on the ship, get more!

Do NOT use $2...they are not welcome.

Geez, it's not that $2 aren't welcome, it's that most people haven't seen them.

I agree they can be confusing. The first time my kids received them, they thought grandma had given them fake money. I have even had stores and fast food places give them a second or third look here in the US.

And OP, I never thought about the clerk thinking me odd. Perhaps you have a guilty conscience...? :D

As a business owner we constantly go to the bank and get 1s and 5s. Following your logic all business owners might be thought of as perverts -- just doesn't make sense to me. People having garage sales get small bills -- lots of reasons.

It's what banks do -- I seriously doubt they care enough about this transaction that is done many times a day to wonder why you or anyone else wants the smaller bills.

My bank people are used to me coming in there asking for small bills. I travel a lot and they know it. I've banked at the same place for years and years. It never occurred to me to make something up about bachelor parties. :)

For the people wondering how you spend that many 1's and 5's...my kids go through quite a bit ordering multiple room services a day X3 people. They usually order a lot of food once or twice every single day. They're teenaged boys, they eat a whole lot. I put a stack of 5's in the desk drawer in the cabin for them to use because I won't give them access to the whole safe. So far, so good, never had an issue with missing money or anything handling it this way. And never have to worry about my kids stiffing the room service waiter because they have no money.

Exactly!

Why purposefully cause all that confusion? It's just as easy to hand over a $1, $5, etc... I swear some people enjoy making things difficult.

$2 bills are not "cute" as a gift. It's annoying and rude.

Whatever makes people happy I guess.

For goodness sake! I wasn't trying to be rude...you on the other hand. Anyway, I had read $2.00 were a good idea and truthfully I have a hard time believing people have issues receiving them and then spending them.

Hubby is going to the bank money to get our "cruise change". We get $1s, $5s and a few $10s.

We use this to tip shuttle drivers, porters, room service, and for my room steward when I ask for extras things during the week.

I also use it to take with us when we go ashore to pay taxi drivers, chair attendants, etc as they seem to NEVER have change......

I never have a problem using it all.......:D
