NYNASHAMN to Stockholm

Recommended Posts

Hello there!

We will be taking Regal Princess Baltic cruise on 4/30/2017. Do you know the best way to see Stockholm on our own? What's the easy way to go to Stockholm from Nynashamn port, bus or train?

We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

It is a tender port. If you take the train you have to time your train times to the tender. Train, bus or car Stockholm is about 1 hour from the port.

Believe Princess offers a Stockholm on your own tour which is a bus transfer for around $66.

Check your roll call there may be private trips planned.

Actually it is not a tender port any more. Nynashamn has just opened a new floating retractable dock. There are several good discussions on this on the Northern Europe and Baltic Sea board here on CC, including detailed information on the trains. Suggest you check that board.

When we were in Nynashamn we had the same question. After doing some research we learned that the lines at the Vasa Museum (which we definitely wanted to visit) were quite long and that if you wanted to avoid the lines you should consider taking a tour. We found a Princess tour (Stockholm on your own, or something similar) which drove us into Stockholm, did a brief motor coach tour around the city, took us to the Vasa (no waiting at all, and the lines were long) and then dropped us off near the royal palace. We had time to watch the changing of the guards, walk the downtown area, have lunch and return to the pick up area with time to spare. This was a perfect solution as it solved the transportation problem, eliminated the hour long wait to get into the Vasa, and gave us time on our own in Stockholm. What ever you do, Stockholm is a beautiful city so enjoy it to the fullest.

Here's the video of your ship docking with the retractable dock:

I saw that video maybe a year or so ago. I think someone posted a thread about it here on CC or something. Very cool.

We decided to take the train to save money, arrive in Stockholm early, and to go at our own scheduled pace. The new dock saves alot of time so there are no tenders! We walked off right at 7am. At the end of the dock is a small TI office. Inside you can purchase a day pass that will cover the train to/from Stockholm + metro/bus in the city + ferry route from Gamla Stan to Djurgarden where the Vasa Musuem is located. There were 2 lines, one for cash and one for credit card. We paid by credit card and were on our way in less than 5 minutes. The cost was 120 SEK pp, ended up being $27.46 on the card. Your also given a paper with how to get to the station with the train times going/coming back. Back outside, you follow the blue line (or yellow, same distance) to the station. You board the waiting train! We were in Stockholm by the time the tour buses were leaving as most weren't schedule to leave until around 845a the earliest. If you want to climb the city hall tower then going early is a must. We were there before 9a and they were already sold out for the first tour so we went for the last tour of the day. We walked around Gamla Stan for 2 hrs and then had lunch. We took the ferry over to the Vasa around midday. Not much crowds as most of the tours are gone. After spending a good 2 hours there we decided to walk the waterfront all the way back to city hall for our tour. The train station was nearby and back to the Regal we went. We never felt rushed and feel the train was a very easy and affordable way to go. Everything we paid for that day was by credit card. I hope this helps!

Btw, there is a local shuttle to the train station for a fee. We walked and ended up beating the first shuttle. Most of those missed the first train because they skipped the TI to board the bus. They still had to line up for tickets at the station which is why they didn't make the train.

You will only dock in Stockholm if the weather and sea conditions thru the archipelago are safe for a ship. I was on Star Princess Baltic in May/June 2010 and our captain did not feel it was safe to go thru the archipelago, so we anchored at Nynäshamn and tendered ashore. All shore excursions were shortened a lot. But I went back to Stockholm on my own in Nov 2013 for 4 nights and had a fabulous time. Abba museum and Vasa museum are worth the visit and costs

We docked in Nynashamn on the Regal and took the HOHO bus to Stockholm directly from the pier. IIRC, we purchased our tickets right on the bus. We went to the Vasa first thing and there weren't lines. Then we were able to catch the bus again in the afternoon back to the pier. Worked out great. Here is an excerpt from the Visit Nynashamn site:

Are there any buses going directly from the cruise ship pier to Stockholm and back?

Strömma usually sends at least 4 HoHo buses for transfer tours, Nynäshamn - Stockholm and back. The buses will arrive stand by just after the cruise ship arrives and take as many passengers as possible. From arrival the buses will wait for a maximum of 1 hour if it´s not already full. Depending on the traffic situation the journey takes 1 hour. Drop off in Stockholm City is Gustav Adolfs Torg.

You can probably contact them to see if they are still offering this bokning@stromma.se

Anthonyy7,

Wanted to thank you for this and your other excellent posts on various threads regarding Baltic Sea cruise ports and how to "do them by yourself" We leave at the end of the month and all your posts have been very helpful.

Many Thanks!
