bazzaw Posted July 26, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2018 It was all so simple some time ago - I would see a great cruising deal, book it and pay the deposit (sometimes the whole thing) and then go and arrange some travel insurance. That was in the days when I had no "pre-existings". In those days , I saw many people who I wondered how they even had travel insurance. In fact, I suspect that they didn't - because what travel insurance company would accept them??? But today, I have "pre-existings" . I have found cover/acceptance of my Atherosclerosis for our last trip - but now I also have Central Retinal Vein Occlusion ( which basically means " almost" blindness in one eye) - probably associated with the atherosclerosis but in reality , the medicos really don't know. So anyway - it seems now that I will somehow or other have to find travel insurance BEFORE I book any travel!!! This will be something new for me - and wondering if any others are in this boat??? joybook Posted July 26, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 26, 2018 I have found InsureandGo great to deal with in covering my pre-existing conditions. If you want to know what the cost is likely to be you can go onto their website and do a 'dummy' exercise. If they follow you up, just say you are getting your budget together or something like that. While I have found them good with their prices I must say that to date (touch wood) I have never had to make a claim so I have no experience with their claiming processes. I have found CoverMore useless. I will probably get kicked off this thread now for saying this so I hope you can read it before it goes.

Yes - I have used Insure and GO also but as you say we don't know about claims. I am not that concerned about cost - but rather can I even get insurance before I decide to make a booking??? It seems like now I have to see if I can even get insurance before I make a booking???

I have also used insure and go but I have travelled with my 80+ mother, paying with a Citibank credit card. They say that they have no age restrictions Not sure about pre existing conditions Have made claims but not for medical and had no trouble with the claim. I have taken insure and go for my next trip with a cruise out of los angles and it was about $20 more for the pre existing conditions for my husband who was in hosp in March this year We are both over 60 Cruise love Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Yes we have been knocked back by Covermore this time. We are from Perth Western Australia. We both have Pre-existing, and age against us,70 & 75 when we Cruise, and apparently where we are going Norway and Scandinvia, we will be away 23 Days. Tried a few ended getting Ins with a local company that didn't make us jump through hoops. I think we paid Aus $1230. Will need to check into Insurance 1st in future. Rare MicCanberra Posted July 26, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 26, 2018 We had always used the CC travel insurance and arranged the process fee to cover the pre-existing conditions. The bank's underwriter changed from QBE to Allianz and now they will not cover any pre-existing covers outside the 43 usual conditions, not even with a case by case basis. We now have an annual policy with NRMA with everything covered. I imagine it would vary for different conditions and people's ages and such but ours was around $750 p.a. Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted July 26, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 26, 2018 We use Insure and Go with minor pre-existings that don't cost us any extra. I had to claim on it last year after a health issue (not related to pre-existings) on a cruise and they paid up fairly quickly. There was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing of emails but it all got sorted in the end. This year we took out an annual policy, rather than a cruise specific one. sama10 Posted July 26, 2018 #11 Share Posted July 26, 2018 We used an annual policy from Covermore, but as my husband is over 75 he can only now get single policies for travel. I still get an annual policy as I haven't quite reached the magic number. They have some pre-existing conditiond that are accepted with no further cost listed on their website. I can't remember what the policy cost but it was well over A$1000 as we have high cancellation charges to cover flights, accommodation, etc and pre-existing as well. I did have to claim when I broke a wrist and had to cancel our cruise and found the claiming system reasonably easy. I also got back more than I expected. Covermore is now Princess's insurer on their Australian website and gives 15% discount on cruise cover. If you can get quotes from 2 or 3 companies you can take it from there. An annual policy gives you the option of knowing you are covered before you book other cruisrs. possum52 Posted July 26, 2018 #12 Share Posted July 26, 2018 We have used Insure and Go for the past few cruises. DH and I both have pre-existing conditions and haven't had a problem being covered. We have claimed medical once and it was paid quite quickly. For our next cruise (13 nights to NZ) it c\ost $250. Leigh

Yes, we always used the ANZ Platinum Card travel insurance which was QBE now Allianz. They would not insure me for last trip of 2 months to Europe. So went with NRMA Insurance (Covermore) for $750 (2 pax ages 70.) Once you hit that 70 mark ye olde premiums shoot up. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Lucky I did not have to claim. cruisine21 Posted July 27, 2018 #14 Share Posted July 27, 2018 (edited) We recently took out an annual policy with HCF and I paid extra for a pre existing condition. When I went to a specialist I was told I didn’t have the condition at all so it was misdiagnosed by my GP and was just dermatitis. I’m currently in the process with a non medical claim during our Europe land trip with NRMA/Covermore. There was a serious car accident with a 7 hour delay blocking the road. We couldn’t get to our accommodation which which was booked by a TA. Covermore wanted a copy of the media report for the accident and written confirmation from the prepaid accommodation confirming it was unused and no refunds were received. Thankfully I was able to find a media report both online and in a local paper. Russell21 Posted July 27, 2018 #15 Share Posted July 27, 2018 Insure and Go are the mob to go with. I have some major pre existing conditions and for an extra $60 on a 14 day cruise they are covered. Last trip we missed 1 port and on the Silver cover we got $100.00 each for the miss. Just about to re insure for the fifth time.

Newby58 Posted July 27, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 27, 2018 The way I see it is that you have to apply the same research you would do for a cruise or excursions. I studied many PDS (product disclosure statement(s) before applying for travel insurance that suits our individual needs. You would be very surprised about the “fine print” unless of course you tried to claim. In Australia, check out “Choice”. jspqld Posted July 28, 2018 #20 Share Posted July 28, 2018 Insure & Go is one of the better insurer's that cover most pre-existing. The company that own them is called Mapfre. I believe they are from Spain?? Insure & Go is their main company but they have others also that sell similar policies and often cheaper. One of them being Tick. Esilef Posted July 28, 2018 #21 Share Posted July 28, 2018 For our Mediterranean cruise and land trip in Spain. My father aged 72 with medical issues was knocked back by his normal travel insurance provider and then paid a premium with another. At the same time I booked with insure and go. They cover my 9 year old sons autism for no extra charge. Dad was grumpy at paying so much for his policy & seeing mine being reasonable. A quick call to insure and go and they changed my policy to a family policy and screened dads medical conditions over the phone and accepted him. By combining our policies we saved big $$$. His other policy was cancelled and refunded. Sent from my iPad using Forums

Cassalou Posted July 28, 2018 #23 Share Posted July 28, 2018 A few months ago I had to book travel insurance for an upcoming Hawaii to Sydney cruise... found that a few companies wouldn't insure my mums preexisting heart condition due to being in the US I originally did an online quote with insure and go which I thought was quite high... the next day an agent called me to discuss and after going through a lengthy phone consultation, doubling my excess and reducing the policy from gold to silver coverage I was given a price ... I said I would call back the next day to confirm as I wanted to do a bit more research I found that with Tick I was able to get a higher level of coverage with lower excess for about $400 less When I rang back the agent at Insure and Go to advise I was not going to proceed with the quote, I was surprised when she answered the call with "Tick insurance" [emoji54] When I queried her it seems they are 'sister companies' underwritten by the same insurer (and sharing a call centre!) yet can't cross-refer customers [emoji849] Definitely look up Tick (I was also able to find a 15% discount code on Finder.com.au [emoji4] Sent from my iPad using Forums
