Travel warnings for Jamaica

Anyone aware of any actions or proposed actions taken by Carnival with regards to the recent travel warnings issued by the State Dept, Canadian officials and the British government concerning Jamaica? Some areas on the island have been declared to be in a state of emergency with troops deployed due to violence.

The State Department is urging travelers to use "extreme caution"; Canada says folks should "exercise a high degree of caution" and the British government is using the term "limit movements". (quotes from Fox News Jan 21 article). It appears to me the various government warnings are not specific to any particular area, and cover the Jamaican island as a whole, but I'm not entirely sure in that regard.

Couldn't find anything relating to this on Carnival's web site.

I just called Carnival to inquire as we are booked on a March 4th cruise porting in Montego Bay. The rep said that as of now we are still porting there but that safety was first priority and they would make itinerary changes closer to cruise time if there was risk. Fingers crossed they make the right call and reroute.

I’d just stay on the ship anyone. Jamaica is the worst port! I’ve mentioned before all this that it is a unsafe port.

That’s what we’ve decided...we were already somewhat uneasy and had read a lot about the crime levels and high pressure sales so traveling with two small children had thought about safety a lot. This news has sealed it and we are staying on board if they dont Reroute

The sky is not falling.

Jamaica is a great place to visit. Especially as a land vacation destination.

I would use the same precautions as if I was visiting Mexico City, Mazatlan, Chicago, Miami, LA, NYC, London or Rome.

Don't think we have US cities under

Military rule having been declared a state of emergency for criminal violence like the St James Parish and Montego Bay. I don't think that's a fair comparison or healthy advice given what's going on in Jamaica right now... I, too am concerned for my upcoming visit in March.

I was looking on YouTube for ideas on what to do in Jamaica, considering Montego Bay for our upcoming March stop. Couldn't believe the news reports from the last few days with military rule. Likely a blessing for those who live there but nowhere I want to vacation...

Absolutely!!! Totally agree, have been traveling to Jamaica for years (cruise and land), I would be way more afraid in many US cities. Be smart if you are a tourist in ANY city in the world and if there is political unrest or unusual crime sprees, the cruiseline will bypass.

Hmmm.....government run media? They tend to use fear and intimidation to control the masses...just like dictators...same rules....

Totally agree with you! Some people just don’t have common sense in a matter of caution and safety. There is no comparison to any city in the USA, no matter how bad the area is, and I wouldn’t venture into those areas either!

Same stuff happens in Mexico. Lots of violence in the country but nobody complains about porting in Cozumel.

Jamaica is the same... if some parts of the island are unsafe that does not mean the port is. That's going to be the place with the most police per square foot anywhere in Jamaica. You will be safe.

Feel free not to listen. But don't cry about why no one comes to your rescue or pays your ransom if you get into trouble down there.

I was in Jamacia on Wed. on Carnival.

You are inside a secured area, there are many booths that you can get your souvenirs inside this area.

IF you are going outside the area and going around on your own you will see near the port there was a lot of police presence. I went outside of the secured area to a few stores nearby and no one approached me. I did see the police waved them back. I felt very safe.

If you are going on an excursion you get on the bus inside the secured area and are safe on the other end.

It will be fine :)

These warnings are coming from the British and Canadian governments.

But are you safe in between the two ending destinations? Hwys and country lanes are vunerable to ambushes even with police escort. When a country needs to roll out its army and heavy artillery, it is a clear sign things are pretty bad.

That is irrelevant... unless you are on a cruise which calls on Matamoros.

A co-worker of mine, a long while back, was accosted by robbers in a parking lot of a Wal Mart in Mexico city. His wife resisted and was killed. He cooperated and lived.

Does this mean the port is unsafe? Nope, it's irrelevant. It's like hearing about gang violence in Los Angeles and being afraid to visit Atlanta.

There is nothing unsafe about the port. I was there on carnival a few days ago.

The port is in a secured protected area. You are able to shop and walk around with no one bothering you.

IF you go outside the protected area yes there are peddlers, there is also are police there to protect you. I shopped OUTSIDE the protected area and no one bothered me. I did see an officer waving them back.

For the record 62 year old single female shopping alone. I felt very safe.

You get into the vehicles inside a protected area, You get outside the vans in a protected area.

You will be fine.
