Drinking on RCCL Cruise Ships in General...

Recommended Posts

Only $12/day??? Wow - I wish. We don't go out and get plastered on a cruise but it's easy while on vacation to splurge with a bloody mary in the a.m., maybe a beer or margarita by the pool, a glass of wine at dinner, a couple of drinks while playing in the casino, and a night cap on the balcony before retiring for the evening -- don't think we could do that on $12 a day -- and don't think we'd be counted as drunk or unruly either!

You're correct. I was being conservative. One drink at Bingo, one at dinner, and one in the evening and you're way past $12

Yes you probably will. But you don't have to be on a cruise to see people making fools of themselves.....be it drunk or sober.:D

Patti, I have even seen a few do it on line in an internet forum from time to time...:D

To the OP, thanks for fixing your signature. It is so much better to look forward to a cruise than to the past.

Was just looking at a few pages of pics in the faveorite cruise pics thread. Great shots.

Yeah some people posted amazing pictures. But I can't go to that thread anymore. It's waaaaaay too long. It's amazing how long some threads get. Like the "All Things (insert name of ship)" threads. Who can learn anything when there are 3,000 posts to one thread?!?!

we've always seen intoxicated folks on cruises, but they've never had a negative impact on our experience. Our first cruise was a 5-day on Enchantment during spring break, and the drinking college kids were everywhere!!

Of course we've seen people under the influence in other places, too, but the most seem to be on board cruise ships, in our experience.

Most of them are happy drunks, at least!:D

So far on our cruises I've seen only a handful of individuals you would say were noticeably drunk.

On our first cruise on Sovereign there was a bachelorette party. I just hope the bride made it to the wedding!

On DH's first cruise on Monarch there was one very drunk soul - he was on one of the Quest teams. We saw him later in the evening asleep in one of the lounges. On a recent Enchantment cruise I saw one woman in the Schooner Bar very well into her cups before sail away.

With the price of drinks these days at $12 a day per person on average and say only half the people on board drink - that is still $24 a day - 1 bucket of beers.

I know there's a lot of checking by RCCL to avoid people bringing booze on the ship initially, but I imagine there's a lot of people bringing it on in ports given that alcohol is so cheap in port.

RC doesn't care about people getting drunk, it's that THEY aren't selling you the booze.

I have never found alcohol to be cheaper in the ports, especially considering baggage charges these days at airports. You can't drink that booze on board-it is taken away and returned upon departure.

Is it as out of control as it sounds? Can I expect to see a boatload of drunk people?

Honestly I don't drink much. May have a few glasses of wine with special dinners, but I get the distinct impression drinking is not only heavily promoted and encouraged but is also heavily participated in.

I know people are letting their hair down and not driving but gee whizz. Seems like drinking is one of the main reasons some folks cruise.

Will I get to see some really drunk people making fools of themselves?

Yay! :(

:)

Hi. We don't drink much either and it does seem as though some people cruise just to sit in a new bar and drink. We were so suprised that at a lot of ports, there is a bar directly at the pier and you wouldn't beleive the amount of people that make it their destination. We had a balcony that was overlooking a bar at a port and some people just never left it til they came back to the ship.

We aren't ones to even visit bars at home unless its for a sporting event, but I know lots of people like to. I just find it strange when people travel to another country/island and the first thing they do is look for a chain restaurant/bar that can be found most anywhere. But hey, its their money and we sure were entertained some nights with the heavy drinkers, lol!

I find it quite hilarious sitting on my balcony as the time gets near for the ship to leave port... it always seems that in the last 30 minutes, you will get quite a show from folks who've spent most or part of their day at one of the local bars. As long as they're not mean drunks... no problem. I look at it as part of the entertainment quotient.

My favorite is Cozumel. I always get a kick out of the ridiculous balloon hats people are wearing, while holding their plastic yards full of, Lord only knows what kind, alcohol. Just before leaving the port, it looks like some sort of clown parade boarding the ship.

I have been on 7 RCCL cruises and have seen very little drunken behavior. I know on one cruise a passanger with a large group got a out of hand , I believe hitting and swareing were involved, and the whole group was put off at the next port. That is the way RCCL handles all bad behavior. Quite frankly that makes me feel safe.

That's what I'm talking about! LOL European cruises in my experience are the best though for late afternoon people watching. Many a time it's crew! LOL Gotta love it when you hear ovations from those on the ship!

The cruise lines make a lot of money selling drinks. It's how they keep the price of the actual cruise down and they expect to make their profits by selling these drinks. There are so many lounges on the ships that in my opinion, if anyone gets drunk, the cruise lines bear some responsibility. The bar tenders should at some point refuse to sell people drinks, but I doubt that happens.

At the price of drinks, just a glass of wine at dinner should cost a couple $12 easily.

:confused: For what? A passenger gets inebriated on a cruise ship? Like he's going to pull out his keys and drive home?

Being drunk is not a crime. If a passenger drinks too much and is unruly or uncooperative they do get in trouble. But to just drink too much - who cares?

Being drunk is not a crime, true. But it's when people get drunk that they become unruly...not all, but some. If that's the case, all I'm saying is that the cruise lines encourage drinking so it's to be expected that some people will be unruly, do stupid things like climbing up on balcony railings, and/or be put off the ship.

By the way, I'm not defending myself as an unruly person since I don't drink at all. I'm alergic to sulfides in wine and don't care for the taste of liquor.

Have seen drunk people on cruises.....some loud....some obnoxious....my husband for one on rare occasion. ;)

I have also seen obnoxious rude bitchy sober people too. :(

We do like cruising for the freedom to have a free drinks and not worry about getting behind the wheel of a car. Sure hope the prude police do not try to make drinking and cruising a crime.

.

Actually I do know someone who overconsumed in the beer bar on NCL Pearl. His Sea Pass was confiscated and security escorted him back to his cabin. The next morning he had to go to the customer service desk to retrieve his card.

One could argue the bartenders at the beer bar did keep serving him until he was too drunk. I don't know who it was that finally decided enough was enough or why.

I have over indulged on a cruise. In my opinion it can be easy to do...hot weather. Beach music playing on deck and nice cold, icy drinks floating around. It IS vacation after all!

I have seen other people who are obviously drunk, but they usually are just happy and having a good time.

..LEGALLY intoxicated. To be honest on a typical cruise, I am probably legally intoxicated

off and on MOST days of a cruise; and I would not be suprised if that did not apply to

over 50 percent of the cruisers on any cruise.

Remember, legally intoxicated these days in most states in .08....and in some other countries even LOWER..

On a typical Caribbean/Mexico cruise, my significant other and I may start drinking beer

by the pool at 10am......stop for awhile mid afternoon, and kick in the drinks later in the

afternoon. On land we may go out for drinks one or two nites a week (but hardly ever drink at home, it's a social thing for us...and more than two we always cab it)

So, though legally drunk; our behavior is quite normal and civilized; and we just know when to "say when" before we are a spectacle (usually we pour ourselves into the cabin for a snooze).

Do we have to drink to have fun on a cruise? no...but does it enhance it? Ofcourse, or why would we pay the price for it? Nothing like a mid-level buzz on a cruise.....

Thats a 12 dolla a day average over the whole ship. Obviously not everyone drinks booze so some people make up for the difference.

You have six drinks a day. The average is 2...

Six drinks spread out over the course of a full day on vacation is not that unusual. When you consider the fact that you are also probably eating more often, or eating larger quantities, I don't think the average person would find themselves out of control. We're not talking about 6 drinks in the span of an hour, with little or no food. Also, I would assume that some activity is happening, instead of just bellying up to a bar for 12 straight hours. If that was the case, most people wouldn't spend the money on a cruise, they would probably stay home and just drink.

Yes, people will probably drink more, but, they also eat more, gamble more and shop more. I have faith that the majority of people know their limits, simply by the fact that they were able to plan a vacation and get to the ship in one piece. Some are even capable of going to work every day and raising good kids.

It would be unusual for me. I haven't had six drinks in three years.

It's just weird to me that people here seem to get absolutely giddy at the mere mention of alcohol like they are 16 and their parents are going away for the weekend.

If I drank six drinks a day I'd be a complete embarrassing mess.
