Drinking on RCCL Cruise Ships in General...

Is it as out of control as it sounds? Can I expect to see a boatload of drunk people?

 

Honestly I don't drink much. May have a few glasses of wine with special dinners, but I get the distinct impression drinking is not only heavily promoted and encouraged but is also heavily participated in.

 

I know people are letting their hair down and not driving but gee whizz. Seems like drinking is one of the main reasons some folks cruise.

 

Will I get to see some really drunk people making fools of themselves?

No, have seen a few happy drunk people, but never to the point where they didn' know what they were doing or making a fool of themselves

My sister and I have been on 8 Royal Caribbean cruises so far and have not encountered rowdy, drunken people. Perhaps if we frequented the lounges and/or discos we might, but we don't go there. For the most part, you just encounter people like yourselves who are looking for a nice, relaxing time.

On a 3 nighter, you may see some folks who will "over-indulge", but generally, it's fairly tame. What you get on land, in your town, is probably a good cross-section of what you'll get on the ship.

Even if someone else want's to go "all out" and party the night away, there's no law that says YOU have to!

Well that's good. Thanks. I've watched shows on tv that suggest they sell about 35000 dollars worth of booze per cruise and with say 3000 people that works out to about 12 dollars each or two to three drinks each per day.

 

I for one can get loaded on a shot of tequilla or two glasses of Riesling.

You might find them on a cruise during spring break.....or a "weekend" cruise (3/4 nighters).

Have been on 20+ cruises and have seen a few "happy drunks", but nothing that got out of control, but then again I don't spend a lot of time at the late night venues.

12 cruises - 11 with RCI and I have never seen anyone overly intoxicated. I did however, on one cruise with a stop in St Thomas, witness a highly intoxicated group heading back to the Carny ship. A few people were literally being carried by others. It was pathetic.

Yes you probably will. But you don't have to be on a cruise to see people making fools of themselves.....be it drunk or sober.:D

If you buy in port the will take it from you and give it back the last night (or the day of debarkation). Read that sometimes folks get it through but they usually are checking and taking.

 

We were on a 4 night last April and did not see any out of control drunkards or overly rowdy behavior.

I have seen many drunk cruisers

Whether it is Rccl or another cruise line where there is alcohol being served there will be those that drink more than they should

But I notice the longer the cruise the fewer overly inebriated cruisers there are

Only $35,000 per cruise? Aargh, now I'm worried that I'll be sailing with a bunch of teetotalers. On my own I can account for a few percent of that, and I'm just one of thousands.

We learned during a Capts Talk on our Mexican Riviera Cruise, that 3 men got back a little late after the ship had started to pull away from the Docks and only way to get them on board was on the Pilot boat but the Capt felt it was not safe for them to try and stand on the bow of the bouncing pilot boat and jump to the landing, so waved goodbye.

That's not far from the truth. It's easy to spend $12 a day on drinks. But with the price of a drink $12 is not doing to get anyone drunk.

Granted, not all 3000 will spend $12 a day, but there are those that will make up for them.

The drunk ones? You rarely get to see them. They usually are trying to walk on the balcony railing and fall off, so they're really no problem. :D

We saw a bunch of high school grads very drunk on Voyager. It was when you could drink (with parental permission) at 18. We watched one kid literally pass out in his plate of food in Cafe Promanade. Other than that we have only seen a few drunks here and there.

Only $12/day??? Wow - I wish. We don't go out and get plastered on a cruise but it's easy while on vacation to splurge with a bloody mary in the a.m., maybe a beer or margarita by the pool, a glass of wine at dinner, a couple of drinks while playing in the casino, and a night cap on the balcony before retiring for the evening -- don't think we could do that on $12 a day -- and don't think we'd be counted as drunk or unruly either!

Reading down through the responses, I'm really surprised by a few. I really don't know how someone could go on numerous cruises and never see anyone overly intoxicated. It seems as though there's always one or two people that stand out on every cruise as being overindulgent....people that just make you shake your head when you see them.

Just be thankful to the drinkers (and the gamblers)....they are subsidizing your cheap cruise fare.

Well, as a college professor I went on my first Spring Break cruise last year and it was interesting. The first two nights of the cruise had quite a few drunken revelers, but when 10+ people were put off the ship in Cozumel, things got quite a bit tamer. It was not, however, off-putting enough to keep me from scheduling the same cruise again this year and having my child with me both cruises (almost 6 last year and almost 7 this year). Honestly, I was not hanging out in the places where the overindulging college kids were (with the exception of the few who had enough money to blow in the Casino).

 

Truthfully, there are always a few intoxicated people on cruises, but no more than you would see in a resort hotel on any other vacation. I can honestly say that 99% of those I've seen who have had too much to drink fall in the "happy, friendly" category and not the "mean" category, so I just chalk it up to relaxation and enjoy the people watching (except when it is my DH...oops, did I just say that?).

 

If you really want to avoid that kind of intoxication, however, I would advise checking the various websites which list the major weeks for Spring Break and NOT going then.
