HAL considering going totally non-smoking?

I don't read Princess threads but sometimes I do read the Carnival threads. This subject gets much more heated over there.

Not sure we're ever going to agree. As long as there are smokers, and it's legal of course, this will be an issue. The very rare occasions when I am near a smoker leave me with stinky hair and clothing and I would rather not smell it.

I loved my last cruise except for this. That's all.

Best wishes to all..................

Susie

I did not and have not directed a post to you. Purposely. I don't understand why you'd reply to a conversation between myself and others.
On this forum sail7seas is one of the "others" ... as am I.

I'm confused. I've never had to address multiple posters while communicating with one individual.
On this forum you are not.

I wish people would stop banging on about 20% of the population being smokers. This may (or not) be true of the US BUT there is a big world out there and I would say percentages for many other countries are probably much higher. Believe it or not, other nationalities cruise too.

I think the concern is, even if 20% of people smoke as the two only mass market lines that allow smoking in all cabins and balconies the percentages will grow on these ships. It seems to some it has and I would say I was in the 60% hallway on the last cruise. Thank goodness I figured an alternative route to get places and I always went around the casino because when it is busy it is impossible to hold my breath that long.

One way to avoid it is to spend a lot of time in the spa, but I don't think you can sleep there.

As I mentioned, last cruise our cabin was very smokey when we entered.

We are sailing on the Ryndam on Sunday. I just called ship services, before I could even ask the representative said "would you like to request a deep cleaning?"

I gave her my booking number and she said that that request was noted for our cruise.

I'll let you know how things turn out.

I did mention that I read about being able to request this on cruise critic, as soon as I mentioned cruise critic, she then asked if I wanted deep cleaning.

I would never have thought to ask before--at least now I know that the cabin will be clean when we get in.

Thank you Ya YA and thank you cruise critic!!!

Doesn't it seem a little selfish and silly to have the stewards go to all that extra trouble when you don't even know if smokers were previously in the cabin you will be in? Of course, once onboard if one finds a stinky cabin then have it dealt with. Anticipating you will have a problem seems to me to waste both money and manpower.

Hi Kakalina,

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on the deep cleaning issue. Even if smokers are not the previous passengers in the cabin, it does get into the upholstery and carpets and does linger, so for those of us with serious lung issues/allergies, it can be a problem; however my understanding is that unless you specifically request it, the deep cleaning only happens if smokers have been in the cabin directly before you.

I agree it is time consuming and more work for the stewards, but, they don't do it in all the cabins and I would assume people would only go to the trouble of requesting it should they need it.

Anyhow, it's nice to have an option and be able to truly enjoy our cabin.

Cheers,

YaYa

Kaklina--before our last cruise I would have agreed with you. We could not even be in our cabin or have our luggage in our cabin (or be out on the balcony because of the ashtrays and spilled ashes and butts). This made even more work for our cabin steward because he had to try to clean the room while the luggage was being delivered.

All I want is a clean room that doesn't smell like smoke and does not have full dirty ashtrays when I first enter the room.

I went into a coughing spell that lasted into the evening, so no I do not think that my request is selfish and I do not feel silly.

I am not asking that they deep clean the room if a smoker has not been there on the previous cruise, I am simply asking that if it does smell of smoke then please take special care to remove the smell and clean up the ash trays.

Thank you for this information! I will request a "deep cleaning" of my stateroom, through HAL Ship Services, prior to my next cruise!

Debbie and MountainMare:

I stand corrected. I certainly understand the need when one has lung or other respiratory problems. It is needed. I just thought it presumptious for those without need to arbitrarily think they must have it because it can be done.

Add allergies in there as well. Allergic reactions can be very troublesome and for some very severe.

Just wondering ...

Because some/many have physical issues that preclude them occupying a cabin where there has been smoking ... would it be reasonable for HAL to prohibit in-cabin smoking? Absent a no-smoking-in-the-cabin policy, would it be reasonable for HAL to add a deep-cleaning surcharge to passengers who do smoke in their cabin? And, yes, with that scenario, every smoker's cabin would be deep-cleaned on turnaround day.

Hi Trish, I appreciate your support - and if someone doesn't need it, then I would hope they wouldn't abuse the priviledge, but for those of us that do, it is very much appreciated. Just think - only 41 more sleeps to go!!

See you soon,

Debbie

I can't imagine why in the world anyone would request it if they didn't need it....please:rolleyes:. Nice way to squirm out of a comment that someone knows was just wrong to make.

This is a very informative thread!

I have to admit somewhere around page 6, I started wondering if I have made a mistake booking our next cruise on HAL. This is my first time with HAL and we had heard such nice things about this cruise line. It just never occurred to me that the smoking thing was such a big issue! We have been on several cruises with other lines and have been able to avoid smoking areas, enjoy our balcony and have a cabin that does not make us sick. Smoke is a big health problem for us.

We are leaving in a few weeks on the Westerdam (too late to change now). We have 3 and 1/2 days at sea. Are the areas around the pool very smokey? What about the outdoor eating areas? We have an aft veranda - was that a huge mistake? I was so looking forward to being on the balcony and watching the wake! I am freaking out a little now.

I will request the deep cleaning - the residual smell can make me physically ill within hours.

I totally did not know this about HAL.

We have only once had an incredibly smelly cabin from smoking - it took 3 afternoons with the ionization machine to clear the air - we were not allowed in the cabin for the 4 hours each day that the machine ran. Since they were sea days it was a real nuisance. I will be requesting a deep cleaning if the previous pax were smokers - did not know that you could do that.

Thanks for the info!
