Birthdays whilst on board

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

Can anyone tell me if I can just inform them about my mums birthday onboard on the first day to get it printed on the cruise compass??, will I also be able to order a cake for the evening too??

Thanks! :)

I believe you can ask for a mention in the compass, but there is a charge and not sure what that is.

You will be able to order a cake too, I think you can do this online too from 'gifts and gear'

I've never heard of anything being printed in the Compass but if you speak with the headwaiter the first night, you can order a cake and they will bring it out and sing on her birthday. Forget what the cakes cost but they are very good.

My DH ordered a cake ahead of time for my birthday a couple of years ago and we shared it with our table. As for mentioning in the Compass, I don't think it's possible. I have never seen anything like that in the Compass and for good reason since probably at least half the passengers are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. If they did it for one they'd have to do it for all and there just isn't room.

On our last 2 sailings on Liberty there has been an annoucement in the compass that announcements can be made and to contact Guest Relations to set them up.

my son Jamie's birthday is the first day on our cruise as well (Jan 19th) and we did order a cake already in the "gifts section" i think it was about $15.00 (a small cake)..and they ask you where you want it ...dining room or stateroom? chocolate or vanilla? etc... we have also had our room decorated in the past for a fee..that they removed the next day without asking??? we usually remind our waiter when we first sit down about the cake because they have forgotten in the past

You can have it put in the compass and during the cruise directors morning show they'll do a "shout out" for you. There is a charge but I'm not sure what it is.
I would give the same advise but am surprised to hear about a charge for this.

People we met on the Mariner had a "shout out" .There was no charge for them.

BTW - We had a special occasion and listed upon booking. We were given "Free" champagne coupons to be used in Portofino.

Maybe the charge is just for the compass printing.

Just got off Allure yesterday (boo hoo)... Printing in the Compass was $25 or $26 dollars, there was room for about 3-4 each day. Ken, the cruise director, would also give a shout out on his morning show if you filled out a card and put it in his box. You can also order stateroom decorations (charge for this too) and it will be decorated for you when you board.

We had the opposite problem. My husband's birthday was during the land portion of our cruisetour & being kind of a private sort, he made me swear not to breathe a word of his birthday to the group. I kept my mouth shut, but while on the road our tour director started a game involving birthday dates. When she got to my husband, he didn't think to lie and let the cat out of the bag himself! Well, we all know what happened next-60 people singing & one very embarassed birthday boy!

The chocolate cakes we ordered sent to the MDR for my sister's birthday on Freedom were $14.98 each. We ordered them two days in advance, but our head waiter and assist. waiter knew nothing about them on Sis's birthday. They did check into it for us and the cakes appeared at dessert time beautifully decorated including her name.

Why two cakes? We were told one wouldn't be enough for a table of eight, so we ordered two. As it turned out, one would have been perfect, so we saved the second cake for the next night. Honestly, I think it was even better than the first, which was also very good.

We thought our birthday cakes were the best desserts we had on the cruise!

There really is no need to order the cakes for a celebration unless you want to include everyone in on a piece of it along with the normal desert. If the waiters know it's your birthday they'll bring out a special desert (in addition to the one ordered) with a candle and sing to you. I ended up getting sung to twice last week... at 150 Central Park (which was on my birthday) and then at Chops the next night. The MDR does the same thing as well.

You don't really have to order a cake, unless you want a cake for you and the family. Otherwise, as long as you tell them it's her birthday, she will get a special dessert in the MDR for her birthday.

Thanks for sharing that, xokaybaybay. My wife's birthday will be on board our cruise next month, and I have ordered the stateroom decorations. Since her family is throwing her a birthday party on the Saturday after she gets back, I'll have to make sure to save these decorations so we can use them 1 more time. :)

My sister had a birthday during our recent cruise on the Explorer. I read on CC that we could put an announcement in the compass for $25, but that morning show shout-outs were free. I was going to print out a sticker and put it in our copy of the cruise compass, but I forgot to. So, I opted for a morning show shout out. On our cruise, the show was from midnight to noon. I looked into room decorations, and they seemed pricey for what you get, so I went to the dollar store and bought $5 worth of stuff and actually got more than what the cruise would have given. It was a bit tricky, because we were staying in the same room, so I had to hide the decorations for a few days, and then find the right moment when I was in the room and she wasn't. It worked out very well. She was happy with my small gestures and even happier with the fact that I didn't shell out big bucks.

As far as cake goes, we didn't order one because we figured the regular desserts were fine and besides, my sis didn't want us to spend money on a cake and have a big deal made by the waiters. She's more low-key about it. On a bit of a side note: my mom blabbed on the night of my sis's birthday. We thought for sure there was gonna be a troupe of waiters singing, but nothing. My sister thought she was off the hook. The next night, our waitress snuck up on her with a piece of cake (and lit candle) and a small group of staff. Apparently, the waitress was gonna do it the night before, but by the time she had the cake and candle ready, we were already gone.

Is there a charge for having the cruise director give the 'shout out for b'day wish', in the morning show, and what time does that show run? Obviously, would want the birthday person to catch the wishes!

Ken Rush's morning show ran from 6:00 AM to Noon. They just kept preplaying it after it was over. There was no charge. You just filled out a card and put it in his box at Guest Services.

We were on the Explorer for my DD's 12th birthday, which was the second to the last day of the cruise. By that time, we'd gotten to know the CD's staff pretty well since we went to all the games and dance classes. She kept telling them about how excited she was to be celebrating her birthday on the ship ... and included the countdown everyday. When the big day came, they asked if we'd be at the bean bag toss later that day and we said we would. Darned if they didn't present her with a "goodie bag" that afternoon at the event. It was an insulated RC lunch bag stuffed with about 7 or 8 different things (Rock-n-Roll Night T-Shirt, RC Water Wallet, RC over-the-shoulder bag, RC document portfolio, and more). I was amazed ... and she was charmed by all the attention.

Interesting!

Years ago (2004??) we sat at a large table, and one of the ladies had a birthday. The wait staff brought cake for the whole table. The lady got a kick out of it and decided that someone would have a "birthday" every night. Our anniversary really was that next day, and so she told the waiter, who brought another cake. This went on each night (HIGHLY irritating and embarrasing), and although I could tell the wait staff was annoyed, they played along and brought cake for a different "birthday" every night. I wonder if that woman was charged for all those cakes! It honestly never occured to me that cake would have a surcharge.

My Dad and I both have birthdays on our upcoming cruise, and I know the RCI agent made notation in our bookings, so it will be interesting to see what happens, because I have NO intention of ordering a cake on my own! Too many other goodies. :)

$25 for a mention in the cruise compass, $15 for a cake, and what $20 for cabin decorations - thanks but no thanks - give me the cash to spend in the casino.

You see... to each his own. I would rather throw my money overboard than throw it away in the casino. ;)
