Hi Steve!

I was there in December 2012 on Ruby Princess and there were people hanging out at the beach and in the water just in front of the downtown area. I didn't notice the water being polluted. Here's an album of pictures I took.

For the date you're in port you'll be there with the Allure of the Seas and MSC Divina.

I'm sure not much will have changed by time I get back there (twice) this December on Royal Princess! :D

Those photos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks for the additional info as to what other ships will be in port that day.The beach always looks so nice, but here is the link to the article: http://www.todaysxm.com/2012/11/08/great-bay-water-quality-worrisome/

On my last cruises I've gotten up early to do the laundry or stayed up late and booked near the laundry room. Next cruise I get free laundry. But, even at the outrageous prices (can't recall what they were) it might be worth it do let them do the darn laundry and not worry or pay for a more expensive cabin. Would take a ton of laundry to be worth a suite etc.

We had a regular balcony on D deck , right next to the angled one below the sea walk. We had fun waving to the few people who looked down for more than a few moments and they all waved back . The best moment was when finishing UBD a cleaner was mopping the sea walk and DH and I spotted him and waved- he smiled and waved furiously at us, then left the mop and bucket , returning once we had finished to give us some privacy.

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

Fun! So....nobody has reported (that I have seen) on whether the angled balconies are really a tad bigger or whether the angle is a bother. We have booked 2 side-by-side starboard--the forward V and hope to open the balcony doors for views forward and aft. From what you could see next door, are they nice? We changed from Riviera to Caribe to move away from the Skywalk. Also, what do you see when you look down? What are those tables and chairs?

Reports have been that you can use your room card on the Royal but even if you needed cash you can ALWAYS get change at the pursers desk. I never understand why people think they have to bring these (heavy) rolls of quarters!

Hi Karen,

As I am Canadian, I try to buy (and stock up on) US dollars when the exchange rates are most favorable. Since we have to pay the exchange plus an exchange fee when we use our credit card on the ship, or anywhere else outside of Canada, it is a way for me to get more bang for my buck! Just saying....

Denise, Get yourself a Sear's Credit card. They have "no" foreign exchange fee, all you pay is the exchange the day you use it. I've had mine since last summer when they brought it out and have saved lots. We have our motorhome across the line so I use the card for a lot of things.:)

Today Royal Princess makes its inaugural call on the port city of Piraeus, Greece gateway to Athens. There are no other cruise ships scheduled in port today. Royal Princess will be docked from 9am-5:45pm local time.

Hi Steve!

Thanks for the article. The east side of the beach downtown (mentioned in the article as having higher concerns) looks to be the one where they've removed the sloping shoreline and turned it into a bit of a drop off, but there are still a few people out in the water.

The canal that they've mentioned is way at the far end of the west side, and the part close to the beach areas has been paved over and closed off. It appears in the pictures that the majority of those enjoying the water are doing so on the west side not far off from the tender pier.

I didn't mean you shouldn't bring cash - just not small change. I specifically said "heavy rolls of quarters".

I bring cash, but in $20s and $50s and get smaller bills (or change) for tips , etc. at the Pursers desk.

When one is traveling, space and weight have to be watched and this is such a simple way to conserve on both that I never understand why everyone doesn't do it.

And yes, it's much better to bring American dollars - the exchange rate on the ship is NOT good! But again, big bills, not small ones or coins.

Just wondering, the sign posted shows "tokens available " from the machine. On Ruby last March the machine gave out casino coins to use in the washer ans dryer. The coin was same size as a quarter. I also did coin from purser desk for laundry and got the casino coins. So is there any use in even thinking of bringing coins..not in my opinion...packing space too valuable.

I am bringing a laundry product "Pyrex complete 3in1" that I am happy using. Great scent in luggage too.

I love this picture; it would make an awesome wallpaper!

Beautiful photo!!! :):)

OK - I just cannot put a photo in the text of the message. I keep getting thumbnails. I tried searching "imbed photo" with no luck.:eek:I see you are giving credit to someone else for the photo, so I am assuming it was from a site like Picasa.

Thanks for your help!!!

Dave, thank you for your input. I went back and looked at your pictures again and saw what you were talking about. Thanks again!

I've been away for a couple of days so came back to Dave's wonderful thread, and low and behold, I couldn't find it on the first page! What's up with that???

It should be made a sticky...and thanks Dave for continuing to provide updates for us. We'll be on board in about a month! So excited.

Video of Royal Princess arrival into the port of Piraeus, complete with some peppy music and a rendition of the Love Boat theme. At just over 8 minutes the entire video is well worth watching. The ship looks gorgeous in the bright morning sunshine, and after watching the video a few times I was dancing in my seat! :D

The US Navy ship you'll see in the foreground is the USS Barry (DDG-52).

Last year on Ruby Princess I did the same thing, got a roll of 'coinage' from the Guest Relations desk. It turned out to be a lot more tokens than quarters so I asked for the equivalent of a roll of quarters in change. It took some doing, but since I had no use for the tokens and had only two loads of clothes, I didn't want to be stuck with all of those tokens. I would rather have had all quarters.

With that said, I'm not sure what other purpose the tokens serve on Royal Princess other than the washers and dryers, and where else they can be used. If there are a lot of other places to use the tokens that's fine. And I'm not sure of what 'denominations' the token dispenser issues, be it 5$, 10$, or 20$. If you get only just as much in tokens than you'll need to do your laundry that's fine.

Personally I'd rather not pack a roll of quarters or be stuck with a lot of excess tokens.

Great Video. Watched all 8 minutes of it. Even enjoyed the snappy Love Boat song.

I am one of those who takes his own quarters. They don't weigh that much and I put them on my carry on so they really don't take any space. My reasons is that on one of our cruises I went to do the wash and the machine in the laundry room that dispensed coins was out, so I had to go to guest services and by the time I made it back all of the machines were in use and it took another couple of hours before I was able to get my wash done. Thus one roll of quarters per cruise and I won't have that problem again. Plus I have brought home some Princess coins and they don't work in vending machines and the store wouldn't take them so had to wait until the next cruise to get rid of them. Each to their own I guess.

Have a safe and Happy 4th everyone.

Cheers
