If we actually waited for the official reports to come out, the gossip mongers would have nothing to speculate/slam Carnival about/on. :D

So far, there haven't been any common factors identified. Perhaps when the investigations are completed and reports published.

I am eagerly awaiting my first cruise on Carnival. IMHO there is one common factor in these incidents, each one has in some way affected the propulsion systems on these ships.

Splendor: engine room fire all propulsion lost

Triumph: engine room fire all propulsion lost

Legend: one azipod not functioning unable to operate with full propulsion

Elation: I have not heard enough about it's issue to speculate

Dreams issue did not affect the main propulsion but the emergency generator failed during a test causing Carnival not to want to risk going to sea with a damaged back up system if the main engines or systems were to fail. In this case I would say that their maintenance procedures worked. Their maintenance tested and found a failure before it could affect the safety of the ship and passengers.

I understand that things can and will happen, but I think with the frequency that they are occuring on Carnival ships the company needs to do something to restore confidence to a lot of passengers.

Wow guys, i just read about the re-naming of a ship to Sunshine, thats not a good idea, especially with customers onboard. King Neptune is already on his wrath and its going after the fleet.

I like to know who's idea it was to re-name a Carnival Ship. Good Luck with that one.

Let me tell you guys something, its been 4 long years since my last cruise, LHP pointed that out, but at work, guess what... I have to hear it every day from everyone as if I was working at Carnivals Corp Office in Miami. I hate it when Carnival keeps coming up due to these engine problems. Carnival had ships that cruised forever. What happen? did they go with cheaper parts or did they get rid of good maintenance people?

Fred

I think they're making the dang thinsg too big and putting too many people on them.

Just my theory...because a decade ago, this wasn't every day news.

I think that the Spirit Class and most agreed with me is the perfect size, other then the Azipods problem, those Spirit Class ships are good to go.

My perception is that cruises are still selling, including Carnival's. .

I have had now 3 separate TA's this week tell me that is NOT the case; that CCL cruisers are jumping ship. It may be temporary...maybe not. At any rate, your perception may be off.

They are literally the only class of ship I like on CCL that I have sailed. I think they are a perfect size. I love them.

I honestly haven't read beyond the first page - I just wanted to say hi to my Splendor galley tour buddy Fred! You didn't notice that they stopped having galley tours for platinum guests after we found "the letter"? ;)

Hope all is well with you, missed seeing you around here. :)

Most of the staff that was with Uncle Bob is also gone. I think society in general has become a lot more whiny during that time frame and not just about Carnival.

Well Sarge, all the whiners left CCL way before these issues. Isn't that right?? Now CCL markets to the 'new cruiser', not the old one who misses what CCL used to be...Well, they did market to that new cruiser, now the new cruiser isn't going to think 'Carnival' when they go to book. Because thoughts of CCL will invoke visions of crashed ships, and over flowing toilets and people pooping in bags.

More than likely, people who were considering their first cruise will now never set foot on any ship.

Hey, I have a great idea. Blame the CEO! It's all his fault, even if the board agree's to his changes, assuming he made changes for the worse (I did not do my homework before posting).

The only thing that is certain right now is a step up in maintenance.

I challenge the OP to run Carnival!

Yup, that is what scares me the most too! Never, ever re-name a ship. Besides the Destiny *was* a great name - too bad CCL didn't leave it as such.

USCG is responsible for a lot including approving port and cruise ship security plans, inspecting cruise ships, etc. Who is looking over their shoulder? Especially with all the government cutbacks

Cruise ships have much of the same monitoring and control equipment that planes do, albeit for marine applications. Perhaps they are overdue for more stringent inspections.

There have been no Government Cutbacks. Even with the sequester, they have only cutback the rate of growth, the government will still spend more than last year.

I think you are wrong. New, and in particular young, cruisers, will flock to Carnival if for no other reason than their grandparents tell them not to.

New cruisers are not stuck in a rut and are probably up for a little adventure. They know how misleading the media and that things aren't as bad as portrayed.

Ha!

Young cruisers tend to be visual and it's the images of poop bags, disabled ships and folks kissing the ground that will be what they remember.

The Carnival beards made a major strategic mistake in turning away from Customer loyalty in favor of newbies.

Not at all. The newbies are the future - not the oldbies. Change happens - you can embrace it or be cast aside.

Whoa! Hat is crazy stuff. I have a friend who pilots a tractor tug in SFO- he brings in the hugest ships. Well- they are all so superstitious. I call them his "tugboat mystics". This is exactly the kind of thing he'd say to me. Yikes.....

I booked the NCl Pearl today for 2014.

Maggie

I think you'll enjoy it. To those outside of CC, NCL is for the most part an un-known. I bet that's gonna change. I honestly feel the NCL truly IS a better product for the money. I also honestly hope Carnival gets it's act together, no matter what it takes....

You know if Carnival had never left Mobile, I might have never cruised with any other cruise line myself.

Royal Craibbean and Celebrity have embraced customer loyalty and have the best loyalty programs around.

Where else, after ten or so cruises, can you have a NIGHTLY event with free cocktails, wine and champagne? Not to mention free internet, free photos, free casino match play, etc..

As a result, RCL and X have an established base. Then they go after the new cruiser with things like the rock wall, ice skating and Flow Rider.

It's a great corporate strategy.

Unfortunately, Carnival missed the boat by tossing overboard its loyal cruisers in favor of the newbies. And it was all over saving a few bucks. Let's see if it will work!
