Seems Royal caribbean is still losing bookings, because of smoking band.

Recommended Posts

You know what I love about this forum. All the posters with the Holier than thou attitudes!! I can always depend on some of you!! Well done!!

I dont smoke anymore. Yes sometimes it bothers me but not enough to gripe about it. Some people just like to complain. If Royal does ban smoking in the Casino. I will find another line. Even though I dont smoke anymore. That is not right!! Thats the reason I havent booked Celebrity. I was going to till I read they banned smoking in the Casino. If all the lines follow that rule. I wont Cruise anymore. Pretty simple. They all lose!! Not me. My money spends just as well on land as it does at sea.

Royal Caribbean gave just about 6 months notice. I have allergies to tobacco and this move is great.

I don't think its possible or the correct wording to say that you can possibly have an allergy to tobacco smoke, since it does not contain any allergenic, which is a pre-requisite for an allergy to be triggered.

More correctly, you probably have a sensitivity, irritant, or if it makes you uncomfortable to now discover that it is not possible to use the word allergy in connection with tobacco smoke, at best you have allergy-like symptoms to tobacco smoke.

The reason why I feel the need to correct this, is mostly in respect to people that have real allergies.

Wrong again. If that were true they would still allow smoking in the Casinos on Celebrity ships. Mark my word, smoking will be banned in the casinos on Royal Caribbean ships and sooner than most think.

They just have to take small steps, one step at a time, to ban smoking here and there until eventually no smoking anywhere on board. And the time will come when people will say, almost in an astonished tone, people used to smoke on cruise ships?

Just like they say…

people used to smoke in Hospitals?

people used to smoke in grocery stores?

people used to smoke on airplanes?

people used to smoke in restaurants?

people used to smoke in the workplace?

etc, etc, etc.

I think it is evident that you don't like smokers and that you'd like to ban smoking all together, even if smokers are in dedicated areas that does not bother non-smokers.

To be fair, it's really awesome to have the room without people actively smoking in it. HOWEVER, the room still seriously stinks. When we sail a ship that is new to us, I usually try to hit the casino before sailaway for some photos. It's empty and there aren't people smoking actively in there.

The casino will have been closed for 1/2 day at that point. I'm not sure when exactly they close on the last night of the cruise but I'll assume it's by about 4am or so. This is probably between 3-4pm the next day.

That's almost a full 12hrs of smokefree air, cleaning the room, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing, the air circulating freely... you get the picture.

The stench of cigs will still almost knock you over dead in there. It is quite foul for a nonsmoker. I take my photos very quickly and bolt.

¡No bueno!

The sad thing is that Royal Caribbean DOES have the ability to do something.

There are better ventilation systems than are installed in RC's casinos.

But they won't or don't put them in. I hate to say it, but TOO CHEAP.

Bad form, RC. :(

I did write them, and spoke with them on the phone. I also know they review this forum and use what they read here and other forums to assist them in making their decisions. After 10 pages of posts on this thread why do you have such an issue with me simply saying I am disappointed?

Your posts have prompted me to research e-cigarettes. After reading about them, I am not at all convinced that they are safe or a good idea, but that one's on you.

They do not seem to harm others, as in second-hand smoke or emissions.

Therefore I agree with you, and think that RC should exempt them from the balcony smoking ban.

Thank you for taking the time to do the research. I also have done a lot of research and spoken with several doctors. There are a lot of unknowns in e-cigarettes, mainly in the e-juice (liquid nic) and that is why I make my own. I also have learned a lot about the proper use, storage, and charging of rechargeable batteries.

What is not right about it? Is there something special about a casino over every other type of environment that makes it not right to ban smoking in them?

I had to read this twice to make sure I read it right. You're a non-smoker who refuses to book a line that doesn't allow smoking in casinos? That's fine...it's your perogative...but while you're calling others "holier than thou," you do realize your particular stance is a little unordinary, right?

The irony of having a holier-than-thou attitude while knocking people for having a holier-than-thou attitude is impressive.

Very impressive, indeed.

It may be that RC is looking at more than emissions from e-cigs. I've read several cases of the batteries exploding and causing fires. One case, it exploded in the mouth, causing extensive burns. Another time, it started a fire in a baby's car seat when the mother's e-cig exploded.

If, they allowed e-cigs, they might be replacing one danger with another.

Uh, the policy has not yet gone into effect.

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

True but it is public knowledge, and has been for a couple of months. With that in mind, here is what the 3d quarter financials say about booking environment:

The company's booked load factors are currently ahead of the same time last year in all four quarters of 2014. Booked prices for the first quarter are in-line with the same time last year and are up for the second, third and fourth quarters.

Now I recognize this is for RCCL as a whole and not just RCI, but RCI is by far the biggest piece of the company [over 60% of total capacity], so it seems as if they the facts as they stand now do not support the position that the "smoking band" is costing the company bookings on an overall basis.

We have several friends that are post cardiac events of one type of another and the smoking policy has MOVED them TO Royal! Everyone has a different spin on it.

A co-worker of mine and his extended family just canceled their Princess cruise and changed to RCI as a result of this policy. They were originally torn between the 2, but the policy tipped the scales to Princess for them. This is a party of 20+. So I agree with the spin comment. People canceling is only half the story.

Really? Talk about complaining, hahaha! I don't think the cruise lines will all lose because you quit cruising.

It is not at all evident that I don't like smokers. I have family members and friends who smoke. I have never advocated banning smoking altogether. Smokers can smoke in their own homes all they want. It is when they choose to enter a public domain or someone else's private domain that limitations on smoking (as well as many other behaviors) come into play.

Do I dislike walking into a smoke filled Casino on a ship or do I dislike going out onto my balcony and have the stench of smoke coming from next door? Certainly I do. Most people do. Most people in the U.S. don't smoke.

I am simply stating the obvious, smoking limitations will increase, the number of smokers in the U.S. will continue to decrease and most Cruise Lines, like Airlines will eventually ban smoking.

IT'S funny to me Royal Caribbean will turn on the non smoker.Just as fast as they turned on the smokers. It is all about the money.I enjoy reading, how the non smokers talk about how the smoke from a cigarette was pouring into their balcony. The all time best is SMOKEY POOL TOWELS.Just glad the people i have met on our ten Royal cruises most have been great. And i know some people have real problems with smoke. But it seems to me their story get's lost in the bxxx Sxxx of other people.A little respect goes a long way.I AM A NON SMOKER. :) :)

Of course it is all about the money. Just not sure what you are getting at here. I am also a non smoker. I am also glad that most of the people I have met on my over 20 Royal cruises have been great.

Royal hasn't "turned on" the smokers, some of the people who smoke cause problems for many of the non smoking customers of Royal Caribbean. Again it is all about the money and in the case of smoking SAFETY.

Royal ran the numbers and decided they could curtail some safety issues AND satisfy more customers. It's just business.

This is a really rough post to understand. It is very rant-like and all over the place. Also, I have no idea what a "bxxx Sxxx" is or how you get lost in one.

I haven't read the smokey towel thread, but I saw it. I will say that getting towel that I'm going to use around my head region, I do not want them to smell of anything except fresh. The nature of these towels is to absorb things, usually liquids, but smells are absorbed as well.

I don't want towels that have been stored in a dead fish area. I don't want towels that have been stored in the perfume case. I don't want ciggie smoke towels or sulfur tanks towels or waste water treatment towels or anything stinky around my towels. I use the to dry my face and often as pillows.

I also specifically do not cruise on balconies because of two things: 1. I feel compelled to use the balcony when I pay for it and 2. I hate being stuck next to a smoker and unable to use my balcony.

These seem like real things to me. Sorry if they don't to you.

Agreed. Also smoking has become an almost socially unacceptable habit and is not allowed in and near public buildings and venues so I fail to see what the rationale is that it that should be allowed on balconies. If I understand the policy there is still one side of the ship that has a smoking area. What cruise line are people supposedly flocking to?

Maybe NCL, which still allows balcony smoking----for now. However, RCI might gain bookings from those who do not wish to smell others smoke wafting over.

And that assessment is based on a lot more facts than the OP! :)

Sorry, just find it interesting that I was sitting on the same balcony and the smoke never even came my direction. The people on the other side of me were also smokers and the only reason I know that is I saw them, never noticed from them either.

Look, I could honestly care less because it doesn't really affect me (well, other than when I want to spend time with my parents)...I don't smoke. But I think some of the non smokers do the best job they can to be really dramatic about it. Not saying all of course. But I have seen my mom just pull out a cigarette and someone will do the obnoxious fake cough and she hasn't even lit the thing yet. .

I couldn't agree more !!

Agree. Me thinks that for someone who does not smoke the OP doth protest too much. :D. Guess they need to post this stuff to make them feel better.
