Power Problem on Nieuw Amsterdam

The person who reported the outage on Facebook is a "friend" of mine and did the reporting with a good sense of humor....called it an adventure....no real complaints. That is a couple who are HAL fans and are using the cruises to evade the cold north for a while. It might help you to understand his post by knowing he is posting daily pictures of beautiful flowers, fun ports, sunsets, smiling crew and delicious foods etc. to keep us in the loop. Besides the HAL Facebook page there are several private HAL Facebook groups. :D

 

This is a board about cruising, which seems to be an appropriate place for you to post about a cruise ship ;)

 

Despite assurance that they were in deep water and not near any shoreline :D I can imagine it might be disconcerting for some of the pax if the navigation and/or propulsion was affected.

I'm really not trying to be a smart mouth but it occurs to me there are a great many cities/towns in U.S. right now with power outages. We've had a severe winter across this country and I am sure there are far more people in cold homes with no lights because of severe winter weather than there are guests without a/c aboard Nieuw Amsterdam. They likely are at more risk of injury/illness than those on the ship due to the severe conditions. I realize those homes are not in the middle of the ocean but we know help is available in the Caribbean if a ship needs assistance in MOST cases.

 

Maybe we get a little overly excited when we hear a ship has a temporary power outage?

 

And, yes, we've been aboard when such has happened and it never occured to me I needed to report it on Facebook. :D (but I'm not much into that social media thing.)

 

 

 

No problem there sail7seas, people I know is on this cruise and I have been following their adventure via Facebook. They sail quite often on HAL, and have never had this happen to them before.

 

I believe it is appropriate to report this information here. Yes their may be people in homes without power but I don't come here to read about that. ;)

He does take some very good pictures doesn't he! I am sure we will see some nice Half Moon Cay pictures soon now that they are moving again. This is his first time on the NA, looking forward to his thoughts on this ship.

Good News, problem appears to have been fixed!

 

Facebook Update from passenger on board:

 

"Moving right along... we're now cruising at 18 knots. We reach Half Moon Cay tomorrow. The electrical problem was fixed and everything is working as it should, as far as we know. There was also no running water and no AC for a while. Very glad the problem was solved!"

Totally agree. If i was aboard I'd be a little worried. Just for perspective we have had the winter from hell-o this year. It started in october.

I am so happy for the passengers involved that the power outage was temporary. I am sure that for many passengers the experience was alarming. I support all passengers taking to social media and reporting these incidents. An informed passenger is a happier passenger.

Just a thought... would it not be nice to have a power outage problem

when in a nice exotic port.... :D

 

After enduring 5 full days without power, I would be happy to be on board ship where someone else was taking care of every thing. A short outage(under 24 hours) is one thing, after days the house temp dips below safe levels, there is no hot food -- unless you cook on a grill -- but if you open the fridge -- the food spoils -- luckily the water continued to flow -- at least in our area, other areas were not so lucky.

Or perhaps you are suggesting they sailed one week as a usual cruise and also joined in for the nude cruise?

We experienced a power shutdown for several minutes on our last Maasdam cruise. We were at dinner in the Pinnacle when the captain came on and announced he had to shut everything down in order to reboot some system. It felt very strange to be sitting there in the middle of the ocean just drifting. It was only a few minutes, but any longer would have made me very nervous.

I can't blame you, Carol. Being adrift at sea can be very dangerous. Happily, this time there was no storm outside, but had it been stormy, there's no telling what danger the ship & passengers could have been in.

 

A decade or so ago, little less, the Rotterdam lost power in the north Atlantic, during a storm. They were adrift, and were sideways to the high waves. One good-sized wave hitting just right, and over they could have gone.

Rather than making assumptions or wild theories let me clear things up. They are on a B2B but this is the first week of their cruise. They were not on the cruise the week before during the other event that made headlines.

 

Like the other person who posted who knows this passenger he made light out of the incident. Doesn't appear that he or anyone else was too stressed except maybe the people on the elevator (see below). Here is his last update:

 

"We were only stopped for about an hour and a half with the "no-power" problem. We got lucky! And we got 2 free bottles of water out of the deal. Sweet! From what we've heard, a few people got stuck in the elevators for a while. But the Lido buffet was going strong. We were out by the pool and wouldn't have known anything as wrong, unless we tried to use the toilets. Someone learned the toilets were not working. Not me."

People create their own B2B cruises....could have started on the nude cruise and stayed on for a longer trip. All I was thinking was that with the horrific attack on that young lady , then a power outage... Wouldn't be a favorite trip. I am happy to learn that the outage was short lived, and I pray for the young woman.
