NCL Photo USB

I know many people are curious as to what the USB looks like that you can buy from the photography shop onboard. I am attaching pictures. It makes a great souvenir although I really wish Norwegian would put ALL your photos on it without you having to buy the specific print copies first.

I would much rather buy the digital files and it would be great at a package at a reasonable price, say no more than $125.

How many people do not buy any of the ship's photos? How much paper and ink is wasted?

If they want to maximize profits they should consider this!

If it wasn't for the ships' photographers my wife would never ever get a decent photo of her and I together. So she buys the photos. Lots of them. I hope they have the USB drive on the Star in the couple weeks.

I admit it's a little amusing browsing through the photo lineup, something I think the newer ships don't have. Everybody is so happy. And then there's always a grouch or two thrown in to even things out.

It's also funny how many people I recognize, even if I only seen them in person for just a fleeting moment. EG. "that's the woman who told me to try that weird looking dessert in the buffet..and it was awesome!", or "that's the guy who farted in the elevator just before we got on", or "that couple sat across from us at dinner the other night", or "that guy won big in the casino the other night", etc.

When did we sail together???

I don't know if anyone has looked at their profit and loss data from the printed photos but I have a feeling the loss is on the greater side. I'm always blown away buy how many photos or printed and then tossed out. I took a behind the scenes tour on the Gem a few years ago and saw a pallet of photos (trash) just from our cruise.

Their must be a better system, give everyone a barcode linked to their cabin TV. The photographer scans the barcode and takes your picture. Sometime during the day he uploads his files from his camera to a server on the ship. Go to your cabin and pull up the photos. Someone must be using a system like that

We made the mistake of posing at every opportunity - candid dinner shots, pool deck, formal/ posed photos, port photos... Figured, why not, right?!

Each evening it was fun to walk through the photo gallery and "collect" our photos and put them all together... We ended up purchasing 5 on the last night  I love taking photos but don't feel I am very photogenic so was surprised to get several really nice ones out of the bunch ;) I do wish we had the digital files though.

Incidentally, one of my favorite photos was a candid shot that my "hates to have his photo taken" husband had one of the roving photographers take on one of the sea days... He's maxing and relaxing in one of the nice window bench seats by Gatsby's :)

Not sure about NCL but on Princess and RC the paper is completely reused so no loss on their end. You don't buy what is on display, they print higher quality prints that you pick up later.

on Disney they scan your card or use facial recognition. You can view your photo's at the kiosks. And have option to purchase 10, 20 or all photo's on a cd

NCL's new system is pretty much that except photos are viewed in the gallery still. Available on newbuilds since Epic and retrofitted also on some older ships.

Ok, so about this ship USB...I have a different sort of question I guess.

I will be doing 2 cruises over the next 2 weeks. I have several SD cards I take along with me, but I take hundreds and hundreds of pictures (all high def).

So, this time I'm almost afraid I just might run out and need something as back up.

I normally take my small 10" computer with me, but this time we are just taking an ipad instead, which of course doesn't have a slot for a SD card to download the pictures and then reuse the SD card.

Is it possible that you can buy this ship USB and have the staff there download YOUR OWN pictures onto it?

Awesome. I didn't know those existed. However, I don't think I'll be able to get one in time for our cruise since we are leaving in a little over 24 hours. :(

Oh my...the prices!!! That's just apple robbery, plain and simple. You could probably find the same thing made in the same factory by the same children for $1.99 on Ebay.

If it was me, I'd just buy some more SD cards and transfer your files when you get home. They're cheap now. You could probably get 2 x 32Gb SD cards from Amazon for about the same price as that obscenely overpriced cable from Amazon.

My problem is we are leaving and there's no time for that. I know the prices they ask for them in the store seem outrageous too and I usually buy off ebay or amazon, but I managed to not think this situation entirely (since this will be my first time going for 2 weeks instead of 1...which I usually have enough cards for). :(

I guess if worse comes to worse, I will have to break down and buy more SD cards while I'm on the ship for $199 instead of $1.99. :p :o So much for all the planning I do before cruising. LOL

  • 1 year later...

Just off the Breakaway this morning -

Embarkation photo is $24.95 each

Other photos, mostly $14.95 or $19.95

Photo package for any 10 (in the same stateroom/folder) is $149

any 20 for $199 - higher # of photos also, but no unlimited package.

We ended up selecting 10 photos as 6 of them are "group" photos with our friends in the next stateroom under our folder for $149 - minus 25% Platinum discount, final total was about $112 ... not bad.

USB stick to transfer the 10 photos - extra $20 (always find a way to check that they are correctly loaded and the digital copies are "yours" and not of strangers from another stateroom ... mistakes in transferring files, do happen.)

We were on the Jewel May 14 to May 21. We purchased 21 pictures plus the USB stick. Always check the preview pics attached to the USB stick. We were missing 3 pictures. So they scanned the pictures again and guaranteed us they were on the USB. When we got home and checked. We had 7 pictures from another family and was still missing the 3 pictures they guaranteed was on the USB stick. If you can make sure to double check.

I know this is an old thread...we have the jump drive and can't get any of our files to open. Anyone have this issue? I've tried 2 different computers and multiple "tricks" 😡

What are you seeing as far as icons and information under "properties" for each file? Are the files RAW format, JPEG, or other?
