Loved HAL but...

We took a cruise and loved the food and the ship except the gym was horrible. DH loved the gym but I won't get him to take another HAL cruise (other than the Eurodam Malt Shop Cruise) unless there is another ship out there with a better gym. Are all the gyms on HAL that bad or are there other ships out there with more state of the art and up to date equipment? Thanks for any input.

I have only walked through the gym, never used it. When on vacation the most I do to exercise is walk the promenade. It looked o.k. to me. I swim at my "Y" three days a week and it looked similar to that gym. Do you really base your cruise ship on their gym???

We have been on "S", "R", and Vista ships and the gym equipment is all about the same. I consider the aerobic equipment (treadmills, etc..) is good, the free weights are OK but the weight machines are really low level. We go to LA Fitness at home and yes the gym equipment on the HAL ships are not near the quality that LA Fitness has. However, I am not on a cruise to work out - I do that at home - I can't snorkel and enjoy sun and warm weather in Indiana in Jan/Feb. :D

I find the gyms onboard to be adequate for my personal workout routine. I belong to Planet Fitness here and don't expect to see that level of equipment on board the ship. IMO they seem to have a nice balance of equipment.

I wonder if there is a site for the best gym's at sea????

I work out at a gym everyday except Christmas. I worked out everyday on the last 2 cruises and in part because of that we have begun using the unlimited laundry service.

The gym is better than any workout facility in any hotel I have stayed at. The cardio equipment is in good shape. I find the strength training to be very basic but for my time on board it is fine.

They don't tend to have what I like most in equipment but not-unlike visiting another gym, I don't know the equipment that well and it always feels off.

I'll second Nana's question. Seems like a strange showstopper criteria to me as well.

Take the morning abs class if you need more exercise.

 I'm a little confused.

Your first sentence ended with 'the gym was horrible'.

Your second sentence started with 'DH 'loved the gym'.

Which is it? :D :D

What would you like to see improved in the gym?

Don't shoot the messenger about the gym, it's DH not me, lol. He's a weirdo, what can I say. He enjoys spending time at a gym instead of snorkeling. He has worked out 6 days a week ever since I meet him when he was in his teens and he is now in his 60s. Me personally, I think he's nuts but I guess it's better than being an alcoholic so I don't complain. He likes the gyms of RCI which were better than land gyms he says. We cruise for the gym (him) food and casino and of course the warm weather. We like to sit at the beach. I was just wondering if other HAL ships had better gyms than the Eurodam. I see the answer to my question is no. I don't think that will stop us though really. Thanks for your responses!

thanks for coming back to respond. the only HAL ship that MIGHT have better equipment would be the new build, the Koningsdam. I am in the minority I know, but what I have seen so far has not thrilled me. Perchance though as they continue it will improve and the gym equipment will be more up to par.

With luck there will be pics of the gym down the road. So far, I have not seen any, but I might have missed them too.

The Eurodam's gym equipment is most likely as good as you will get on any HAL ship. I must not be that fussy:p good for your DH to continue to work out. He is to be admired.
