Are you a max credit slot player

Just taking an informal survey. When I play a slot or video poker machine I always play max credits. Of course, it does not take long to go through money that way. But I cannot fathom hitting a big one and finding out I did not get it because I was not playing max credits.

That being said, as I wonder about either land or ship casinos I find many, many players playing 40, 50, 100, etc. credits instead of 300 or 400 (the max). I just can't get over the disappointment when I hit a good one or a bonus playing low credits.

How many credits do you play and why?

I always play max on VP. I go back and forth on slots, depending on if they have a progressive function (quick hits, etc) or not. The ones that don't have progressive I will sometimes play less than max since there is no "penalty" for playing less. That being said, when I have the funds, I prefer max.

I play max on video poker. If it's a multi-line, I'd rather play at a smaller denom and have multiple chances at that 'full-pay' Royal Flush.

I rarely play slots, but when I do I have no problem not playing it full. I'm usually just having fun seeing if I get get a bonus round on some intriguing game.

If you aren't playing max credits then you shouldn't be playing. The percentages go way down if you have no chance at the bigger jackpots.

The only time I don't is when I'm in Vegas with friend and we are only playing for the free drinks.

I always play max. I will never forget a few years ago on a Carnival cruise, seeing a woman hit the exact combo needed to win a BMW or (I think) $25,000. Her husband was freaking out until he realized she was only betting 5 per line instead of the needed 10. He looked so disappointed! She still won a decent chunk of change for the bet, but it sure wasn't a new BMW or $25,000.

There is absolutely no reason not to play max bet on slots or VP. Most machines only pay their progressives and higher jackpots on max bet. As you point out, you'd hate to hit that Royal or Triple Double 7 or whatever and not get the jackpot, because you were not playing max.

If you can't risk max bet on the machine you're on, find one that with a max bet you can risk.

Nothing drives me crazier than seeing someone playing bet one on a dollar VP machine. If you don't want to risk more than a dollar or so, then go to a quarter bet and play max!

One time I was playing a VP machine. I didn't check the pay tables, my fault. Max bet was 10 coins, I figured I would get $4000 for a Royal playing 5 coins, but I never checked the pay table until the Royal came up. I only got $2000. Hard lesson learned. Always check the pay tables.

I was playing a quarter machine 15years ago and i was not playing max bet. I hit the jackpot and won $100 instead of $7000 I was bummed.

My wife and I were playing on a Carnival ship out of LA quite a few years back....watched a lady hit the royal with 1 coin in, got the $100 or so bucks, not the progressive >$6K. It was the last night, so I figured we missed our window, wouldn't get it, etc. Low and behold, about 2:00 AM on the last night, my wife got dealt 4 of them, and picked it up! Great hit at the end of a great cruise!

I must be missing something. If I play a machine it is usually VP. I have never even noticed a progressive jackpot on VP. I usually play $5 or $25 coin machines and the odds on all payouts are the same percentage all the up to the royal. I like to start with say a $25 bet and progress up to $125. Could it be there is no progressive on the higher denomination machines?

Hi clcjdn,

Do you mainly play on the cruise? If you play land casino also do you have favorite casino to share?

Thanks,

Teddy

I live in Colorado, so I play sometimes in our gaming town of BlackHawk. I also go to Vegas 2-4 times a year for 3 or 4 days. When out there I stay downtown, usually at a Boyd property just off of Fremont Street. I usually cruise 1-3 times a year. All of the extra trips are dependent on winning trips leading to a repeat. I primarily cruise NCL now, but get Premier and other offers from Carnival.

As for the progressive question that was in the next post, only have seen on Carnival at the $0.25 level, but they are 10 coin machines. If you play $5 or $25 level, I haven't seen those containing progressives at sea.

It depends on the machine I'm playing. I prefer $1 slots, so if for instance my machine pays $1,000 jackpot for $1 bet, but $2,500 for $2, that's not enough incentive for me to double my bet. But if the $2 bet can get me, say, $5,000 or $10,000, then yes, I'll play $2 for the (potential) better return.

I usually avoid progressive jackpot machines since the odds of hitting them are definitely not in my favor. I'll stick with a simple traditional 3-reel that gives me back enough to keep playing and the occasional good hit. It's my entertainment, after all. ;)

The machines are only going to payout what they're going to payout. If you'd have bet max, you probably wouldn't have hit the jackpot.

That's what people don't understand. They think the machine is programed to hit certain combos every so often, but they're much, much more sophisticated than that.

As for what I play, it depends on the machine. If it's one where the only difference between playing 1 coin/credit and 5 is the multiplier of cash won, then playing the max is the obvious choice.

The Video slot machines though, are much more sophisticated creatures. I play at least the number of credits that all the games and features are in play, and then play beyond that based on how it's paying.

For instance, I like the Big Bang Theory in Vegas, which has a lot of features and games to play. I played that thing for hours at a time on $20 playing it at 200 ($2) credits. (it went to $6) For hours of entertainment, this is a great machine and the 200 credit level was perfect. At a few points I'd get up to $500, winning it $30-$50 at a shot on the bonus games. I'd start betting the max and yes, the payouts would increase, but the bonuses came up much less frequently, and my pot would dwindle. I'd go back to $2 and the bonuses would start hitting again and I'd build back up to $4-500.

In the end I didn't walk away with a big progressive jackpot, but I had hours and hours of really fun play.

On the ships I've found most of the games with the extra stuff going on to be similar. They tend to reward you, although not huge, and engage you enough that you'll sit there and spin and spin until it's all gone and you're reaching in your wallet for more cash.

That said, if I've only got an hour or two and I am hoping to win a jackpot, I'm at the dollar reels betting max and hoping for the best.

Yes, people should be aware that casinos have the ability to change the percentage payout based on the bet. Sometimes they may lower the percentage payout on max bet to try and decrease the frequency of big pays. They also may lower the percentage payout on the minimum bet too as there are many low bet players.

That being said, I usually play max bet, but it depends on how much that max bet is. If it's over $5 then I usually only do that if I have a big bankroll on hand as I can blow through my money too quickly otherwise.
