Looks like Ncl made the right decision regarding Breakaway itinenary

Will someone please find one post in this thread where anyone said that NCL made the wrong decision about not going to Bermuda? It's never been about canceling Bermuda because of the weather. Most of us are upset about the communication and lack of compensation for the lousy itinerary change.

Where should they have gone? They gave out $400,000 in Obc. That's not insignificant.

As I've said, and others have said, repeatedly... Can-a-da.

There's a big difference in OBC and cold hard cash. Did NCL really lose $400K? No.

I also really enjoyed the big pile off dirt and steel buildings of PC... Breath taking. The beggars, trash filled sidewalks and stray dogs were a lovely bit of atmosphere in the Nassau port area.

Still an insignificant credit when you take into account you turn around and give it right back to them - mostly on something you wouldn't have bought anyway. I also doubt they were completely full.

But you haven't bought it! You have been given something that has cost $200! I am absolutely fascinated reading this thread!

I totally agree! Being on a cruise ship is better than being at work....But just in case, how do I get trip insurance for a cruise leaving 10/23/2016. My good friends in Bermuda say the island has NO power at all. The eye of the storm is passing from 2-4pm today. I can literally have fun anywhere!

Maybe help rebuild?? My friends' husband takes care of the Queen's Estate in Bermuda and if they need help and we are there, maybe we will meet the Princes and the Princess Kate??

I think you are SOL. You would need cancel for any reason insurance, which has to be purchased well in advance.

Shouting at guest services! Some guy screaming at guest services ... he is a police officer ... lots of ship's officers around

O boy, so what, He is a Police Officer who the hell cares?

and I love our boys and gals in blue, but how does

that change a Hurricane out there?

Read the fine line when you book your cruise, they

only have to guarantee that you we get on Board

The $200 OBC could have been turned into cash at the casino for a 3% charge - resulting in $194 cash in the pocket (or the machines). More times than I should have I've gone to the casino desk and requested $100 to be charged against my cabin. You sign a form, they hand you money, simple. We did our first cruise on Royal (Explorer of the Seas Pacific Coastal Sept 30th) and learned that they charge 5% at the casino ....... and their machines were MUCH tighter! Luckily our table mates taught us to play Hand and Foot and we spent many hours playing it with them on our sea days instead of donating more to the casino.

We were booked on the Breakaway for quite a long time but cancelled after learning there was an 80's Rewind cruise group on this sailing. I was worried about venues being closed to us because we weren't part of their group ....... never even considered a hurricane. We were on the Epic during Hurricane Earl but it was earlier in the season so I guess I thought October was "safe". After cancelling we booked the Explorer and we really enjoyed the Explorer Pacific Coastal and dodged a bullet on the weather we would have experienced.

Bermuda is in our thoughts and we hope for speedy recovery and rebuilding.

Norwegian averages around 40% margin, say the cut their profit by 1/3 for my booking. That that's around $750, and I'd feel like I had a nice positive to help balance things out.

So what did NCL do wrong that warrants cutting their profit by 1/3?

I have dinner soon, but briefly they desire repeat sailing from their clients, keeping customers happy and wanting to sail with them by providing an enjoyable vacation is key. There has been nothing worth doing regarding the ports, yes the ship is great, that is not all I paid for and all I wanted. These are people that charge $6 for a bottle of water, why do you have such affinity for corporations, they should have backup plans for these situations. What business in the hospitality industry do you know of that does not care about the happiness of the paying customers. I cannot get my time back and take an alternative vacation for at least a year, due to time and finances.

So if I go to Disney World and it rains for a week causing me to not see fireworks, use the pools, have to wear ponchos etc. should they give me 1/3 of my money back? I don't disagree that the itinerary change stinks but NCL did nothing to cause it and they have the same expenses they would have had sailing to Bermuda. I've had itinerary changes where I've gotten no compensation, I still made the most of it.

I have a feeling the Breakaway is going to go to Canada because of people throwing hissy fits this week. I'm going to think of this idiot when I'm freezing my ass off on my balcony on Monday.

Royal Gazette, Bermudian newspaper.

5pm update

Hurricane Nicole is continuing farther out into the Atlantic, with the National Hurricane Centre at 3pm putting its eye 90 miles northeast of the island.

Nicole has caused serious damage to the island’s infrastructure, causing walls and roads to collapse, tearing roofs off buildings, ripping up trees, smashing boats against rocks and flooding numerous homes and roads.

Walls are said to be damaged along the Causeway, which is being assessed.

Flooding victims included Victor Scott Primary School, while Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club’s structure suffered extensive damage. Residents near Elbow Beach report a significant outflow from a broken pipe. Other details of damage are coming through to us this afternoon as residents emerge cautiously from their homes.

Yes, but that is a report from while still under the hurricane warning and the reporters could not be out and about. The latest reports are that there has been some serious damage but it appears not as severe as it might have been. Apparently Nicole took a late eastward wobble that spared the worst winds. Some power has been restored and roads are passable. A clearer assessment can be made tomorrow. The best news is that it appears there have been no casualties or major injuries.

No use getting mad before you even know if your itinerary will change. If it is changed make the best of it. You can't do anything about it and nothing anybody said will have a bearing. If they change the itinerary the decision on where will be based on available ports and fuel costs.

WE were able to disembark around 3. The NCL Daily warns against wandering around Nassau after dark due to criminal activity. We stayed onboard. I know they need an international stop but Nassau was a waste.

The Zika concern is legit and they should let those people disembark that are concerned but I don't feel they owe them a refund. You can go ANYWHERE on a cruise if there are weather issues. If you aren't prepared for that the cruise line cannot refund 4500 fares. They can let people off while in NY though if they insist. I think?

I have to disagree, I believe the risk of contracting Zika is valid for a refund and I would definitely request to speak to a senior officer. I would express the danger I feel of contracting Zika intelligently and calmly. I request to exit the ship file a medical claim with a supporting dep from my doctor. I would request a refund but understand that I would probably have a better chance of at least letting them negotiate for another sailing. The risk of having a special needs child far out weighs a weeks worth of crappy vacation. and I don't believe NCL would want that in the press if its handled in the proper manner

Just a note that some (most?) third party insurers offer a CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) add-on that would pay 75% *cash* back, not just a cruise credit.

We always get coverage from a third party insurer, so there is no internal conflict between the travel providers and the insurer.

See the following for the CC subforum on travel insurance:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=635

thanks for the info. I always get insurance from the TA but will look into this; since I generally book my cruises the first week of Sept for that price drop. So do you get 2 policies or just the one from the 3rd party. and do you find them online. Im sure we cant mention names on here

I truly understand pax would be disappointed to not get their booked itinerary, BUT there are 2 simple solutions. 1) Don't cruise during hurricane season. 2) Buy travel insurance, so if something like this happens, you can solve the problem for yourself by recouping your losses and booking a later cruise.

Any update on the wife who was sobbing on the couch because the captain wouldn't sail the Breakaway directly into a hurricane?

Just wondering how she's doing. She manage to enjoy part of the cruise?

I didn't realize she was sobbing because he wouldn't sail directly into a hurricane. I thought she was sobbing because she was looking forward to going to Bermuda, and found out she didn't get to.

I'm so surprised at how many people on CC think it's a major crime for someone to feel disappointed about something. Just because someone is disappointed, doesn't mean they don't understand or don't agree with the decision.

I have a cruise on the Breakaway coming up this spring. The only reason I am cruising out of the Port of New York is in order to sail to Bermuda. If I get there and for whatever reason find out we aren't going to Bermuda, sure I will have a great time on my cruise, I will understand and likely agree with the decision, but obviously I would be disappointed. That's completely normal.
