Less Crowding During Self Walk Off

Since there are many complaints about crowds during Self Walk-off, NCL is trying to fix that.

Everyone (including self walk off) need to pull color tags for their bags. The self walk off are given specific windows where they will be allowed off. There are a limited number of tags for each self Walk Off windows.

I think I am always off the ship by 8: am doing self walk-off. I hope this isn't on the Epic next month since my travel plans were planned expecting I can be off the ship by 7 in Rome.

Walked off the Gem this morning. Got to Bliss around 7:15, started the walk off around 7:45, through customs by 8, found out we were docked at a different pier than we parked at (so walked the length of the pier before noticing no one could find their vehicles), walked to the correc pier, and were home before 8:30.

I would nto expect to be off the ship by 7:00 even with the 6:00 a.m. arrival time.

I believe what BirdTravels posted was for the Breakaway, with a scheduled arrival time of 8am. If your cruise is scheduled to arrive earlier, the disembarkation times will be correspondingly earlier. And with the relatively small number of passengers disembarking in Rome, they may not need to bother with different color groups for self-assist. If they do, just choose the earliest color. No problem.

Oops. Forgot to specify the Breakaway disembarking in New York.

They did not use colors for self walk off of the Jewel in Los Angeles last month. This is the first time I have seen this.

Have seen this our last few cruises on Dawn and Breakaway but it does look like the times have been shifted - hopeful that this helps at least in some part the huge lines that occur. The one problem is this, people do not listen!!! they go when ever they want..

Greetings

It might make things faster if they limited the number of bags allowed for those walking off and they made sure the walk off passengers were able to handle the bags. How many times have we seen passengers trying to herd 3, 4, 5, even 6 bags off the ship?

Good Sailing

Tunaman2011....... my exact thoughts. On a recent Escape Cruise I was meet by a huge group of people waiting on deck 13 waiting for an elevator. Each person had a huge suitcase and were all complaining that they couldn't get an elevator. Walk off suitcases should be limited to the size of an airplane carry on. Larger suitcases should be put out the night before.

Great idea NCL but they need to police the tag colors if they are going in this direction. Gray can't show up with Purple and if Pink shows up at 9:30 then they get turned away until the last color is called, etc

Maybe I'm missing it, but NCL has had set times for certain groups for years. The problem is no one follows those and lines up whenever they feel like it resulting in a huge line to get off ship.

Thanks, BirdTravels for the heads-up !! Can't wait to read about it tomorrow about the new "mess" at MCT ... It's worth a try.

101% agreed on the matter of enforcing the colors - not sure if the restrictions of just those hauling a 22" or even 24" or 25" rollerboard going to help (with the size of the *Away elevators)

But what if the ship is early, or, worst - late ... are they going to delay & hold off the successive "waves" of mob trying to barge their way toward the gangways ... seen that & always avoided, rather sit in the MDR or somewhere onboard to watch the crowd first.

The bottleneck is, sometimes, the result of CBP not staffing up to handle 4,500 pax coming off ... with 6 to 8 booths & uniformed officers working at the counter. I am not sure if this new system is going to help ... give NCL and terminal "officials" the benefit of doubts to try.

The color groups for regular disembarkation are impossible to enforce, because the colored tags are on people's luggage (which they no longer have with them).

With self-assist, people have their luggage with them, so it should be easy to see if someone doesn't have tags or has the wrong color tags. If the ship's staff don't do any enforcing, passengers can take things into their own hands. We're talking about the Breakaway, here… :D

You are correct, NCL has to have someone there turning the wrong colors away, otherwise, it will be disaster in the making.

Being retired, Catherine and I will try to help with this conundrum.

When we arrive in NYC from Southampton on the inaugural transatlantic next year,

we will try to be the last ones off the NCL Bliss.

Ahh... see the difference now. I must have been a bit slow yesterday and even a bit slower today.

Walk off looked like a nightmare today. We stayed in the haven and being whisked off the boat and through customs so fast made the upgrade worth it. We were home by 10 and my 6 year made his 11 am soccer game. Wish it was that easy for everyone else onboard.

If you can carry your bags who cares. If you can't then I agree, but people should have more sense. No amount of tags or systems can help stupid.

Hope you had a great time! Are you saying that those in haven are escorted off the ship and Through a separate customs line?

I thought once off the ship you were in the same boat (pun not intended) as everyone else. If customs is backed up nothing you can do but wait.

This is exactly the problem I experienced on the Pearl in December. I was not doing self debarkation.
