Asking steward for a foot stool in a veranda balcony cabin

Cathy's DH Mike here. I had to read this thread because I could not believe that such a simple question had so many responses. I'm giving my answer to the OP and if anyone wants to bash me, please feel free, I won't be checking this thread again.

 

Dear OP,

 

We are on CC class next year. We don't cruise all the time, but we pick CC class because we like the extra couple of perks.

 

That being said, go ahead and ask. If you get a yes, tip the steward. If they say no, say to them, "That's ok, I understand completely, I didn't mean to put you in an awkward situation,you're still my favorite steward of all time," and give a smile.

 

And then, have a great time!

Did you ask your room cleaner about the the microwave or did you go to Reception and ask the front desk, who would know exactly the policy concerning those items not listed with the room you had paid for?

 

Enjoy the FV, they are fabulous cabins.

 

I never saw the room cleaner at the hotel. It's not a like a cruise where the room attendant introduces themselves and asks if there is anything you want. At the hotel, I picked up the room phone and pressed the customer service speed dial button.

 

One of the underlying controversies in this thread is some people are very concerned about asking their cabin attendant to do something that might not be feasible. Unlike hotel cleaners, cabin attendants are expected to interact with the guests and ask them if there is anything they need. On a cruise a few years ago, I was trying to track down my dry cleaning, because it was late afternoon and I needed my jacket for that evening's formal night. I go down the the guest relations desk and inquire about my dry cleaning. What do they do? The call my cabin attendant on the internal phone system and ask him - just what I was trying to avoid. I figured it was the cabin attendants time off and I didn't want to bother him. What I learned from that is the front desk people will hand off guest requests to the room attendant regardless.

I think this is an ethical question and it's not fair to the persons who have paid the full price for a conciërge class cabin. Please also book conciërge class and don't bring your steward into an awkward position with his job.

Im going in a concierge cabin in October - paying full price. If someone in another cabin wants a foot stool, asks for it, and gets it - be my guest! That doesnt destroy MY cruise experience - or my concierge experience.. I actually hope my fellow cruisers gets all the perks they can, and if a foot stool means something for them - hopefully they get it!

The OP shouldn't have asked this on here as they don't need permission from the members here to ask the cabin attendant anything. Apparently he knows it isn't right and wants justification or approval from others.

 

It is no different than sharing a drink pack or trying to let others share in their Captain Club benefits, or those that tip big the first day to the BT so they get "better" service than anyone else. I have befriended a lot of BTs and servers and they despise those that do that because it makes them feel as if they are being bought. They would rather get rewarded at the end for just giving great service and not feel that obligated to do so.

Until your footstool breaks and they can't replace it because it's in a verandah cabin. Or you don't have one because a steward put it in another cabin on the prior cruise. Guess that would be no problem for you...

I can't believe some of the responses in this thread. It's like civilization will crumble if someone gets a footstool.

 

I'm going on Equinox later this year, our first Celebrity cruise after many other cruises, mainly on RCCL. As usual, we booked as big a veranda as we could get, in this case what I've seen referred to as the "the tunnel". As I've done on other cruise lines, I'll ask for a lounger or at least a footstool, and I'll be shocked if the stateroom attendant balks. The balcony is three times the normal size.

 

If I get a "no" response, there will simply be one fewer footstool on the pool deck the next day.

So just take what you want! Why not take a lounge chair and a larger table from the Mast Grill for your balcony, or swing by Michael's Club and grab a couple of beers. Why stick with what you paid for when there is some much to just help yourself to.

Well at least we have discovered one thing on this thread. We have all read those sad threads when someone has 'fallen' off a ship which always end up with posters proclaiminga person cannot accidentally fall of a ship, they must have jumped or were climbing on the railing or something like that.

 

We've bought one of these:

Sadly, I rather think that security would be called because of a loud 'bang' if one of us tried bouncing on our footstool.

 

Sorry, slow on the uptake this morning. Maybe that’s why all those 'fallers' seem to be 'in the prime of their lives' I would just end up in the infirmary. ;)

Our room attendant kindly provided ice and a small shower seat (from a handicap accessible cabin?) so that he could extend his legs to ice his knees while sitting on the balcony.

 

Don't worry - the shower seats in the handicapped accessible cabins are built into the shower (they're attached to the wall and fold down). Shower seats are usually provided for non- HA cabins when one is needed :)

We received one of those "shower stools" when staying in a 1A (one of the "tunnel" veranda's.)

 

I did not ask the steward for a stool because we had a larger balcony, or because we were used to having one in our normally booked AQ's or Sky Suites. I asked for a stool because I had injured my hip, the evening before our cruise, while walking around Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

 

Since we were to be at sea the next day, I wanted to be able to rest my hip as much as possible before our port days began. Sitting on the veranda reading a book, while keeping my leg propped up, seemed like a good idea. :cool:

 

At first the steward said that there was nothing he could provide. He was very sorry and said that he was not allowed to provide the stools to staterooms where they were not already included. I understood, and did not push the matter.

 

Lo and behold, when we came back from dinner that night, he met us at the door with a grin on his face. He held out this rusty shower stool and said that was all he could find. I was very grateful and enjoyed my day at sea. :D We did return the stool a couple of days later as my hip improved.

 

Kevin - Good luck! And if you don't get that lounger or stool, please don't take it out on your steward. ;)

I believe that if you have a third guest in the stateroom, you may ask for another chair. We had 3 in a Sky Suite with only two chairs. Our Butler would pull out the desk chair when we dined on the veranda for breakfast. So we did the same when sitting out there.

I am in a regular veranda cabin on deck 9 on Equinox this week. We have 2 foot stools on the balcony.

If I were you, I would take them down to the Grand Foyer this evening and auction them off. You might pick up enough money to cover your bar bill, or perhaps you would prefer to use it for some shopping or a casino donation.

OMG I can't believe some of the postings on this thread. We've got everything from people threatening to steal footstools from other areas if they don't get them, to people worrying about what happens if their footstool breaks and they can't get another one because it might have been given to someone who hadn't paid for it. Wow. And I thought dress code threads could get heated.

 

So what the heck, I'll throw in my two cents. I see nothing wrong with politely (key word - politely) asking for one and if the answer is no I will make sure the room steward knows I understand and do not blame him/her. The cruise line is responsible for making sure everyone who 'deserves' one gets one, so I will expect them to be responsible to make sure they have a few as back-up in case someone's breaks.

 

I will choose to define 'fair' as expecting what I paid for, and being grateful if I ask for something beyond that and am granted it, and gracious if denied. I will not fear being unfair by asking for a specialty restaurant discount because the person at the table next to me may have paid full price. I will not fear being unfair because my TA gave me $150 OBC and you got none because you choose to book direct. I will not fear being unfair because I booked 9 months ago and got 3 perks for a certain price and you just booked and got the same type cabin for the same price with only one perk. I will not send a stink eye towards my neighbor who didn't realize balcony cabins had no footstool and so asked the room steward for one to rest his injured leg on. I will be considerate, I will be polite, I will thoroughly enjoy my cruise and thank God that I am able to be there, and I will worry about my own business and not others. The end
