The Omnipresent Dress Code Thread

Thank you Whirled Peas! I should note I was asked to remove a bulge in my suitcase when placing it in the overhead bin on the plane. It was a rain jacket and that extra sweater. No other issues and I believe/hope :o I have everything I will need onboard.

By the way, my itty bitty purse has been great. At first I thought I would miss all the extras I normally tote with me, but it works well so far. However I wish I had space for lipstick. You are on your way to lighter packing starting with that item!

Quite an exciting flight, though. Due to some malfunction, our 757 could not travel above 16,000 feet. The pilot told us we most likely would have to land somewhere along the way due to using so much fuel at the lower altitude. We made it to JFK, thankfully. Looking out the window, it felt like a helicopter tour of the entire northern USA border.

Safely in Brooklyn now, awaiting boarding!

Best of luck with your packing endeavor. :D

Glad you got here safely.

I know the excitement of being in the terminal and awaiting those "Golden Doors" open and heading for the gangway.

I envy you today...Wish we were with you..only three weeks ago we did the same walk as you boarding the QM2.

Maybe will watch you going under the VZ Bridge later by the Narrows..Hope the weather get better for a True Sail away...

Thank you both!

Abe, it was so beautiful. The Cascade & Rocky Mountains, as well as the Great Lakes, were spectacular from such a low vantage point. We didn't follow the usual freeway routes, which made it feel as if we were traveling further into the wilderness each hour.

Whirled Peas, please know I'll be waving at you from Deck 11 as we pass under the Verrazano Bridge!

Hey, let's start a rumour that Cunard will inspect your luggage at check in for appropriate cruise attire.

No tux in the bag = no getting on the ship!

Nope, I don't think that will work. Everybody knows what really happens if no tux is found in your luggage upon embarkation: under escort, you are immediately taken to the shop and fitted for a tuxedo rental!

Stay tuned for more FAKE DRESS CODE NEWS !

Indeed, but worse happened to me....in March I boarded QM2 in Sydney, enroute to Hong Kong, my portmanteau was opened by the Cunard Dress Police, not a tux in sight, just a well worn dark grey suit for posh nights. I am still in the QM2 brig, sorry security cabin...help, let me out. :p

I heard you don't have to abide by the dress code for dinner if you have special dietary restrictions.

Correct, I am a coeliac - gluten tolerant, I am banished to the buffet, because the head waiters don't want to take special diet orders anymore. So no formal dress for me.:p

My husband has dietary restrictions. He is allergic to bow ties, cumberbunds (sp?), and shirt studs. That's why I cruise Cunard with girlfriends (and I have NEVER been required to pack a tux!)

Generally speaking, only those that attend the balls in the Queen's Room tend to dress as per the themed nights - though of couse anyone may do so if they wish.

My husband and I totally adhere to the dress code as in formal or otherwise, but apart from B&W, which most stick to rigidly, we don't observe the other themes.

Just thought I'd post a quick update now that I am finished packing. I not only managed to keep it all within the carry-on luggage limit, but I also was able to add one more formal shawl, two extra pairs of shoes (total of 6 pairs inside), a masquerade mask, and an additional sweater. My small "personal item" bag still is 20% empty, just in case I find something along the way I cannot live without. Moreover, when I zipped the main case together, I discovered an unused large pocket ready to fill with whatever toiletries I collect from the ship and other goodies. I thought that zipper was the one to pull when converting the bag into something that must be checked; so I had steered clear of it. ;)

In other words, it is possible to travel lightly on a formal ship with numerous changes of clothing and plenty of shoes. So worry not about the stipulations of a crossing on a Cunard liner. Go with the flow and enjoy all the grandeur that still exists out on the open seas.

What brand of carryon luggage are you using? Can you actually get it in the overhead?
