Anyone regretted getting Cheers??

Recommended Posts

My wife purchased cheers twice did not work out for us! We do drink a specialty coffee every morning . She just doesn’t drink that much we usually drink water on a cruise and at home. For me I usually get a few drinks in the casino and usually end up with the Drinks on us from he casino so for us it’s not a great deal at all. Not putting anybody down who gets it just not for us!!

Actually I think a Baller wouldn't get Cheers.......

They'd want to order what they want - whenever they want and not deal with all the rules.

Wait 5 minutes, no doubles, no buckets, no large format drinks, no "I need to stick to the recipe B.S." - etc.

I still pay for buckets during the day and rounds of shots at night. I have the bartender let me know when I hit 14 so I can just buy drinks until the end of the night when I get my 15th (last) drink of the night. Also my wife doesn’t come close to 15 so I use hers as well.

For my wife and me, it was completely worth it. We are probably considered heavy social drinkers, and we would easily consume $80 to $100 pp in booze per day, but perhaps that is because we like those expensive Alchemy drinks, at $11 a pop. As I have noted before: mimosa or bloody mary at breakfast, drink by pool before lunch, drink at lunch, 3 drinks by pool after lunch, 1 pre-dinner alchemy drink, 3 glasses of wine at dinner, 2 post-dinner alchemy drinks. 12 drinks in 15 hrs - even with some of the martini-type drinks at 3oz of liquor each we aren't exactly stumbling. This would almost hit our limit of 15 without even trying! (And we did hit our limit one night, and hit 14 on another, on our last cruise.) On port days, take away the drinks by pool and lunch drink, but probably add another pre-dinner drink - so 8 drinks. Still ahead of the game.

But I know a lot of people who don't drink as much as us, and for those people, Cheers! is not worthwhile for the alcohol. If drinking four drinks a day is going on a real bender for you, Cheers! is probably not a good idea.

The great debate of worth or not worth it as it pertains to drink packages. Here’s my experience for what it’s worth.

Did a 7 night on RC and at the time the package was $44 per day (not including 18% gratuity). After hours of calculations I got it for wife and I. Again, this was Royal so pricing was different. I found myself adding up every drink purchase daily making sure we’d break even, from coffee to soda to alcohol. By week’s end we probably broke even so was it worth it? From a cost perspective yes, but I found myself ordering higher cost drinks then usual just so I could think I got my monies worth. We’re mainly beer drinkers, but I enjoy a nice single malt scotch or margarita once it a while and took advantage having package.

Second experience on a Carnival 3 night cruise. To me, no brainer considering it’s $50 a day, for two of us 300 plus 15% gratuity. So for a short trip I felt it would be “worth” it. Well, after two days of drinks, day 3 brought us to not wanting to drink at all. When I got home I looked at our printout of expenses and added up drink cost to see if it was worth it. Again, broke even and probably would be ahead if not for the absence of day 3. This experience was worth it to me based on short trip, less cost.

Now, we sail again in March on Carnival for a 7 night cruise and I’m probably not getting Cheers. Based on my experience, it’s equivalent to just add “x” amount of dollars to account and enjoy drinks as if I had package. The current rate of $52 per day (not including gratuity) is $364 x 2 is $728. I’d rather put $500 on account and by mid week see where I stand, and add if needed. If by end of trip we pay more then we’ll know for future.

I think this option will work the best based on our drinking habits. Plus we’re not restricted to a limit, not that we’ve hit 15 alcoholic drinks in a day. Come close, but never 15. And factoring in drink fatigue or just a day or two of a couple of drinks, and not feeling like I lost out that day with the package.

This is a big reason we are doing the same for our 7 day (adding $500 to the account). We plan to order whatever we want, knowing the drinks are already "paid for" but not feel like we have to drink just to "break even" or have limitations on what we can get.

We're trying this too on our 7 day on the Miracle next month. I purchased $200 in Cruise Cash Bar and my sister purchased $300 (she tends to drink a little more than me).

We have purchased CHEERS for the last 4 or 5 cruises and though I really liked ordering whatever I wanted, I don't think I ever broke even. This is a Premier Cruise so we will have free drinks from the beginning of the cruise when in the casino (and we spend a lot of time in the casino), - that will also cut back on what I normally pay for.

We'll both keep track during the week and see if we go way over what we've purchased. If so, we'll go back to getting CHEERS - if not, hey it's saved me over $200.

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve bought Cheers for Horizon Inaugural I think I’ll just break even I’m not a big drinker at home but when I’m on holiday I do like to try lots of different drinks & I won’t feel like I’ve got to finish them if I’m not keen.

We tried to buy a bucket of beer to take into the theater so we wouldn't have to wait for hit or miss service. They wouldn't sell us one bc we had cheers!?! But we could buy a bottle of wine at dinner.

I've heard this both ways, you can and can't buy buckets when on Cheers. Clearly you can't use Cheers to pay for a bucket but where you can pay "cash" for a bucket via you S&S account.

Thank you for helping keep the price of our Carnival cruise at a very reasonable level. Please encourage others to purchase as well !

Why is it so hard for people to understand that not everyone's situation is the same as theirs? Maybe I'm making your cruise more EXPENSIVE by drinking fifteen $22 drinks a day for $51 and passing the cost on to you.

Don't feel like skimming through, but can someone tell me if the non alcoholic beverages like coffee, sodas count towards the 15 limit?

Hmm, maybe try checking the Carnival website?

But no, non-alcoholic drinks are not included in the limit. If you order a coffee every five minutes, you can drink them all day long. So I guess practical limit is 288 (12 coffees an hour for 24 hrs).

Hell no. Carnival is only paying about $1.50 (on average ) for 50 ml of top shelf liquor. Soooo-- 15 x $1,50 = $ 22.50 Please keep buying Cheers.

Oh I will, for me it's much cheaper than paying by the drink. No matter what you might think. What "Carnival pays for top shelf liquor" has no bearing on my bill whatsoever.

I did. My wife is not much of a drinker, but we gave it a shot on Dream in January because they added all the other non-alcoholic drinks. I added up the total drinks for the cruise and it worked out to about $11 per drink. We only had a few drinks in the steakhouse that were priced higher than that and many beers, coffees and sodas that were much cheaper. So, for us, it was not a good deal even with the additions.

Agreed! My husband and I also did not feel it was worth it for us. When we took into account the year before we did whatever we wanted, drank whatever we wanted and only spent $500 total. Then with cheers we were about double that because of the cost of the package. Plus we felt obligated to get our moneys worth and some days just didn’t feel like drinking.

What does Cheers include exactly? 15 drinks a day? I know alcohol, is that any drink with alcohol? Bottle water too. Milkshakes. What is coffee bar? And soda, is it fountain or cans/bottles? I am really thinking it would be worth it for us on an 8 day cruise; 4 port and 4 sea days. One of our port days is only 7 hours. Another though is until 10 pm. Are there any places to have a sit down breakfast on the ship, not buffet? Or do servers still come though at the buffet and take drink orders?

15 alcoholic drinks. Unlimited anything else. It includes specialty coffee. My drink of choice was a chai tea with espresso and that was included. It also was nice to grab a bottle of water before you left the ship and to get fresh water when you got on. My husband was chugging monsters all week. However by about day 4, we didn’t feel it was worth it as port days we didn’t seem to utilize it and we were bloated and full from sugary drinks! It was very valuable for my morning pick up though :)
