meet & mingle "vs" roll call meet up?

I always log onto the roll call for each cruise, I've never had one to active. But honestly, I have never attended any of the meet ups for them. What is the difference between doing that and this meet & mingle? Just wondering if people really do this? I generally cruise with just my husband and am not real interested in making new friends, just relaxing and going with the flow . We have had set dinning and met some great people at our table and that was fun. I don't know, this just makes me curious? Any experience?

A meet and mingle event is usually attended by activities staff and sometimes some of the senior officers from the ship. Sometimes, they do giveaways of cruiseline trinkets, cups, etc. On my February RCI cruise, they gave away bottles of champagne and wine! Sometimes the organizers set up a slot pull in the casino or a cabin crawl to check out other types of cabins that members may have. Its usually fun, but I have been to a couple that were not as fun as others.

Roll calls beside the meet & greet also arrange private tours groups in port.

Our 28 day Hawaii and Tahiti in October has arranged games , slot pull , cabin crawl , private tours and group dinner.

They also arranged for conference room for the groups use to play cards and games during the cruise. The group is over a 100 couples.

Some have done this cruise before and have info.

We need an unofficial meet up back in the day on Carnival when there wasn't a "meet and mingle" by purchasing Party Package with Carnival for the group. Called it a reunion or something not Cruise Critic. We loved it because we got to meet new people and basically get lots of drinks for super cheap!

Carnival does an extremely poor job of managing these. We had over 50 registered, and the meet was never scheduled by Carnival.

Best to set up your own.

Freedom last Oct. They held it 6th day on a 7 day cruise @ 6PM. 62 signed up, 6 showed.(Most were at dinner or getting ready after a port day) No CD only a low ranking activities person and no gifts. Thankfully we had our own the first sea day. Same plan on Sunshine in a few weeks.

And if you ask why such a pathetic time they will give you the stock answer that it was the only time the room was available. This is just another case of Carnival doing it with the purpose of doing away with it due to poor attendance

I believe that Carnival is is really flubbing what could be a great opportunity to engage their passengers... I have heard everything from poor attendance to having them at poor times, or making it difficult to even find out when / where it is. NCL hosts Cruise Critic Meet & Greets that are attended by all senior officers (minus the Captain) They provide refreshments. But most of all, the officers really try to talk to each and every attendee. They want them to bring up any issue, no matter how big or small. These Meet & Greets average from 60 to well over 100 passengers. They really want to make sure your vacation is going great, because after all, Cruise Critic members are the most likely to go home and write a review.

Princess also does something like this and we have seen the capt for a a few minutes at these. No refreshments but that is really not necessary.
