Child falls 2 stories in ship at port

Recommended Posts

Poor kid. But where did she fall from? Every railing on every ship I've ever sailed on has to be at least 40" high (I've never measured, though). Unless she was climbing on something and lost her footing......in which case, where were the parents?

This happened this morning on the Glory. They were saying on the ship that she fell from the 9th floor to the 3rd floor in the atrium inside. News stories say it was 2 floors...sure hoping the news is right. It was a sad way to end the cruise. We had 3 other medical emergencies this past week, one before we even made it out of the port in Miami, one in Cozumel, and another that had to be taken by coast guard boat to Key West. Don't have any other details but prayers for all these families...

Yep. We are here waiting and just got the text that we are delayed boarding 2 hours. They made an announcement in the main area but not here where Priority people are. Apparently they are offering free shuttles to a mall or something.

I know about the incident in Cozumel. Somehow, a lady got a piece of meat lodged in her throat. I don't know all the details as communication has been via text but the ship doctor could not remove it. They took her to the hospital and she underwent surgery to have the meat removed. She is being released from the hospital in Cozumel today and flown back to Atlanta. She is fine. Carnival, the hospital, the port authority, and Allianz insurance company were all awesome in assisting this lady. We are all grateful she is fine and will be boarding the plane in about a hour to return home.

Just left the ship, the child did indeed fall from deck 9 to deck 3. I didn’t see her fall but I saw her family on deck 9 just moments after she fell, I will never forget what I saw. Police all over the lobby and I suppose because of the investigation they hadn’t covered up the floor. I am fairly certain by what we saw she did not survive the fall, it wasn’t confirmed by anyone but I know what I saw. I have a child at home and I can’t wait to get home and hug her.

Just got onboard at 12:35pm from the Priority Lounge.

Glad you made it on board finally. That's not how you want to start your vacation, but I hope you have a great cruise! So sad about the serious fall. It sounds really bad.

Thanks. Yeah not a good start. Even worse way to have a cruise end for the family.

If you hear anything for certain about her will you come back and post. Even though I am fairly certain of the outcome maybe there was a chance she made it.

There seems to be more of this on cruise ships than at Hotels with atriums. I don’t know why

I'm not so sure about that. It seems that the news is always quick to report on accidents and incidents that happen on ships. When was the last time you heard a news story about a hotel with a norovirus outbreak? I haven't ever seen one, but it can and does happens everywhere.

I'm thinking since they were disembarking, maybe they were waiting for an elevator and she stood on a suitcase or something. How else could an 8yr old go over the railing?

I have an 8yr old and this brings me to terrible sadness for that family and their days ahead.

Children do climb. I scolded a child once on a ship while his parents were too busy drinking to see that he was climbing on the rails.

Of course I got dirty looks!!

I can't seem to wrap my head around the HOW either. My first thought was leaning over the railing to look down below. We just got off the Sensation on Monday and traveled with a 3 year old. He was fascinated with pressing his face against the glass to get a better look at what was happening in the Atrium. We do our best to constantly be vigilant about safety, but sometimes, things happen so quickly there's nothing you can do. I can't even begin to imagine what this family is going through!

On Glory, deck 9 is Lido, top deck of the atrium. She would have fallen from deck 9 to deck 3. Had to have, to end up on the lobby floor. EM

Since they were prepared to disembark, the child could have stood on the carry on luggage making it very easy to fall. The security tapes will tell.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's not about judgement at all. It's about how I can be more proactive in protecting my children and all children on cruise ships. I'm not judging anyone! Whenever something like this happens, I always think about what I can do to try to prevent this from happening to my child or another child. Selfish of me? Absolutely! But if we don't learn something from tragedies like this, why discuss them at all.

Agreed.

There are only a couple spots on deck 9 where she could have fell from if that’s really where it happened. I’ve heard conflicting reports.

This is the pic from embarkation today on deck 3. I haven’t heard anything else yet. Not saying this is where it happened because I don’t know. It’s the only thing that looks out of the ordinary. So sad.

She fell 3 stories. The girl was on deck 6. She leaned over and fell, hitting her head on the deck 4 railing. She landed on deck 3.

She started on deck 9, but took an elevator down to deck 6. She did not fall from deck 9.

So sad and still shaken over this tragedy. I am a 67 year old grandma and taking my 6 yo grandson on the vista by myself in January. I cant be careful enough with him. I know for sure I wont let him out of my sight. Really feel for the family.

A heartbreaking story. Her family will be in my thoughts. Cruising is such a wonderful and happy experience for me - it is hard to see it bring such pain to someone else.

Agreed except the part where you called yourself selfish. You are definitely looking out for your own, and that isn’t selfish. You are looking for solutions to save your own kids and others’ kids as well.

Yes this girl is gone, but this mistake can be learned from so that it doesn’t happen again to someone else.

I have too. It takes a village to raise a child. My heart goes out to the family of this child.
