Rainy Days

Hi all, getting ready to get on the Equinox on 5.25.2018 (one of our favorite X ships). It looks like it will be one of those rare rainy ports all the time situations. We usually just take a light rain jacket and upgrade to the premium drink package when this occurs. We are of the opinion that there are never bad days on a ship ;)

I thought I would start this thread to see what everyone else does when this happens (albeit rarely), who knows we might get some new ideas!

Happy Cruising!

Sign up for the cooking class in Murano, if they have one (although this is usually a sea day, so won’t be a rainy port option), You make your own meal (which is mostly making an appetizer: they cook the steak, potatoes dauphinois and soufflé). Then you have this for lunch in the Murano private dining room. Lots of fun to do, even if you don’t know a lot about cooking. Have a great cruise!

Unfortunately rain is predicted most of the week. On the plus side you won't have to fight "Chair Hogs". Some ships schedule more inside events when they know that it will be miserable weather outside. I generally spend more time meeting friends, old and new. Al Bacio is a favorite meeting place so it can get crowed. If I can't find a spot to enjoy a non Alcoholic drink in Al Bacio I go to Michael's Club. I also try to go to a movie if they have anything that might interest me.

My iPad is always loaded with the books I have kept meaning to read. On wet days I will enjoy a drink or two then settle down for a good read. My choice of books mustn’t be too good as I tend to nod off after the first chapter....

We sailed a few times when absolutely pouring the entire sailing ... didn't dampen our spirits in the very least, though (pun intended).

We find a nice spot out under cover on the back deck and have our mimosas while watching the rain fall just beyond the overhang. Or ....

we go swimming / hot tubbing in the indoor pool area

find a movie we've been wanting to see

take a good book to the sky lounge

book a massage

hang out on our balcony and order room service

meet up with friends that are also hanging out onboard

We usually don't even cruise for the ports anymore but mainly, just to be on the ship ... so take full advantage of doing just that. Sometimes, the crew will have a bit of time to talk as well ... always a pleasure to get to know them a little better when things are slow for them.

One of the best sailings we've ever done had the absolute worst weather.

During a quick shower in a port, we watched (from our covered balcony) people scuttling in to get out of the weather. We also sat outside behind the OVC and watched the rain showers moving in over the water - a magic pattern of sun and cloud.

On one cruise it was a tropical washout and our hiking trip was cancelled - we had to substitute a rum tasting. ;)

We learned on our Alaskan cruise last year to bring our own set of Dominos! Not sure how stocked the library is with cards or games so we will probably also throw in a deck of cards. A cocktail and a good game or several can pass the time!

I always bring a book that I've been meaning to read for months....then on rainy days I find a quiet chair in the library and sit and read undisturbed all day.....unless it's not raining on my balcony, then I sit and read there all day. I know most people love to cruise for the activities and interaction with others....I love to cruise for the peace and quiet and freedom to do whatever I want to do undisturbed. I think retirement is going to work out well for me. :D

PS: It's not that I'm anti-social....I love meeting new people in the MDR for meals and talking over wine and dinner but for me vacation means NOT having to socialize if I don't want to.

My brother brought his liar's dice cups on our last Alaskan cruise. Everyone saw much fun we were having and wanted to join in. We met a lot of nice people that way!

It depends on where we are … in the Caribbean we might go out anyway if we think the rain will stop soon, because we know things - and us! - will dry off quickly. If the rain is going to be all day, we'll stay on board and do some of the things already mentioned on this thread.

If we're somewhere other than the Caribbean, we'll go out anyway. We don't want to miss exploring a new city!

That's why we always book one of the extended balcony's. Love sitting out there with a good book, maybe some room service, especially when it's raining. Ahhhh

There is always something to do on the ship it's just the ports that are more "challenging" But a poncho can be your friend.

There will be rain on Friday as we leave port from Miami with a little snotty conditions to SJ but after that it's just the typical occasional passing showers at all other ports.

See you tomorrow.

Very true, especially for days in port. There have been many times when we were snorkeling only to find out it rained the entire time we were in the water ... then, the sun was out again when we hit dry land.

Once, we booked a tour in Aruba on the other side of the island from Palm Beach. It was an amazing day with brilliant sunshine the entire time we were there. We headed back to the ship, got cleaned up and went back out to try our luck in the casino near the dock. We spent a couple of hours in there and headed back to the ship for dinner. We were seated next to these girls that commented on what a horrible day they had with all that rain all day. Hahaha ... we never even felt one drop of it. That is an example of being at the right place at the right time, I guess. We noticed the streets were wet when heading back to the ship but we somehow avoided every little bit of the rain without even really knowing it.

Not every day will be a complete washout!

Yeah, it happened to us on the Riviera(Oceania)in Jan. It rained on & off on all our Central American stops. They cancelled our snorkeling excursion. I guess they didn't want us to get wet! When this happens we just hang around the ship. Maybe do the spa, take in a movie perhaps. It's also a great time to sit in on a lecture from a guest enrichment speaker( I don't mean shopping specialist)Overall you're exactly right there is no bad days on the ship. A cruise is all that you can make it to be!
