Disc on cruise cash/Cheers....good idea?

So I have a cruise booked aboard the Legend in March, 2021 to the Panama Canal.  Got an email today for 20% off Cheers and 20% off $100 cruise cash.  Of course in normal circumstances this is a no brainer.

So my question for those that know....  If I DO take advantage of the above offer....If the cruise is cancelled by me OR Carnival, is the money spent credited back to me in the form of payment I used?  Carnival won't hold on to this in some way if cancelled?

Thanks!

I just got off the phone with Carnival, as the fine print for the 20% discount for Cruise Cash, states no refunds.

I wanted confirmation that IF CARNIVAL cancelled my cruise VS me cancelling, what happens to the $$ spent for the pre-purchase for Cruise Cash.  I was told...”If Carnival cancels, my $ will be refunded to the original purchase method.”

Well then, that IS a good deal! It is consistent with their other refund policies. Good show you all! 👍

To be clear, the money is refunded even if YOU cancel before the sailing.  It is NOT refundable if you sail and don't use all of the cruise cash.

That's not what the previous poster said is it?  From their post I was of the conclusion if you bought the cruise cash at discount and YOU cancelled, you lost that purchase.

DH called carnival yesterday (4/11/20) and was told this if WE cancelled or CARNIVAL cancelled, we would be refunded for the discounted Cruise Cash.  However, I am aware that sometimes the Carnival operator may not always be well informed. Hopefully it won't be an issue and we will be cruising out of Puerto Rico January 2021! 😁

What @RumpunchGirl says is correct unless something has changed very recently.  Given it is usually not discounted, no one would ever buy it if you couldn't get a refund before sailing.  There don't appear to be any new rules with the discount being offered.  Now if Carnival declares bankruptcy, you likely won't get your money back.  But that's a whole different ball game.

I’m glad you were able to clarify the issue of Cruise Cash refunding, not making a diff on why a cruise was cancelled (Carnival cancelation VS PAX cancelled).

The agent on the phone, did seem a bit confused about the whole issue.  She hadn’t noticed the fine print about no refunds before.

When she understood my question about the cruise being cancelled by Carnival, she was very clear that refunds of pre-purchased cruise cash/excursions/cheers would be made...and since I’m only worried about Carnival cancelling, I didn’t press her for further confirmation, but (maybe incorrectly) I was left with the impression that the “no refunds” clause would be used if I were the one to cancel my cruise.

THANKS! I'm sure this discounted cruise cash IS to generate some operating expenses/etc.  They still do okay with this even at the 20% discount.

I'm gonna buy $500 worth!

Correct me if I’m wrong but couldn’t you buy the discounted cruise cash, download the money into a slot machine charging your ss card, and instantly cash it out making a immediate 20% profit ? The website it allowing me to buy $500 cruise cash for $400. Sounds like a easy $100 profit unless I’m missing something.

Nobody has gotten refunded anything for anything as of late. I would never give Carnival any money for anything else right now .....You’re just making a donation to the “help us stay out of bankruptcy “ fund at this point.

Good lord, some of you just aren't happy until you spread that "sky is falling" garbage in every single thread. We're here discussing a good thing...a decent sale on Cheers and Cruise Cash. Many people are gladly taking advantage of it and happy to save the money. But some of you can't stand to see any positive talk.

The only fine print in the email I got says, "No refunds onboard for cruise cash purchased during this promotion." The key word being "onboard," and that's typical for Cruise Cash once you're on the ship. So I think it'd be refunded regardless of who cancels, just like normal. I don't think the discount changes that.

I really don't mind this purchase right now.  Do they need the revenue?  Absolutely!  Would I like to save $100 on $500?  ABSOLUTELY!

If Carnival goes bankrupt we really have no idea what will happen.  I'm gonna hope for the best....

We bought $500 worth for an April 2021cruise.

Yes, it is a year out, but who else will give me a 20% return on my money?  My 12 month CD is only earning 7%.

The fine print also says it can be used for gratuities - which we were going to prepay anyway.

I might be misunderstanding you, and if I am, I apologize, but I just want to clarify something. The Cruise Cash you bought can't be used to buy prepaid gratuities. It can only be used to pay gratuities if you choose to pay them on the cruise because the Cruise Cash funds won't appear in your account until embarkation day. If you don't prepay gratuities, they'll be charged to your S&S account on the last night. Also keep in mind that the Cruise Cash will be the first funds to be deducted from your S&S account as soon as you start spending on board. So if you happen to spend $500 (or more) before the last night, there won't be any Cruise Cash left to pay gratuities.

Kind of difficult to win in the Carnival casino since you "would never give Carnival any money for anything else right now."

Thanks for the clarification.  My intention was to point out that we planned to make a payment to cover the gratuities, so Carnival would have had an advance on our money regardless.  By purchasing the Cruise Cash we help them “stay out of bankruptcy”  and make a nice return on our money.

Does anyone have the dates of this offer?  I am about to book a girls trip and would love to know what the parameters are on the 10 vs 20% and if there is an expiration on the deal noted?

The advertised end date was 4/12.  The offer was still on one of my cruises 4/14.  I didn't check the others.

I haven't looked today (4/15).
