Btimmer's Almost Live Nieuw Statendam Canada, Greenland, Iceland Trip - 8/3-27/22

Here's a photo of the bow cam at night crossing to Greenland.  This is the first time I've seen converging spot lights and I suspect it has something to do with spotting icebergs.  When we went up to the Crow's Nest, we could barely see the lights so they must be of a special intensity and hue to work with night vision in the bridge area.

Today we arrived in Qaqortoq, Greenland (pronounced Ka kor tawk) after a night with 'motion on the ocean'. We tendered in with no drama.

it's a colorful town and we just walked around snapping photos.  Below are a few.

You're most welcome.  This is our 'poor man's' VoV cruise.  It's been fabulous so far. The Captain just announced that our scenic cruising tomorrow should be the highlight of the cruise. Tonight we have a chance at seeing the Northern lights.

I agree! We did the VOV in 2018 and missed Red Bay that cruise (couldn't tender because of heavy fog and rough seas) so I'm really enjoying the photos of that port.

We've had a pleasant visit to Sydney, Nova Scotia.  We took a 4 person taxi tour to the Louisburg lighthouse and fort and then a drive out to the Alexander Gram Bell museum in Baddeck along with a lobster roll lunch.  Probably our only regret was that the 1 hour at the fort was too short.

We're just departing on a very warm Friday afternoon..

I got to visit the Bell museum back in 2012 while on a cruise and it was wonderful.

Anyone who gets a chance should not miss it

After a day long pause in our internet connection, I bring you the following update.

We just traversed Prince Christian Sund which is probably the best scenic cruising we have ever done: many glaciers, waterfalls, icebergs, rock fissures, rock formations, intense winds, quiet spells, 360° turns, one other cruise ship in 7 hours, seals, one remote village, and a weather station.  There was so much scenery it was hard to take it all in.  These few pictures are a tiny fraction of what I saw. Put this on your bucket list!

Tim, glad you're weather is so good. You missed 1 heck of a storm here yesterday. We had 1/2" of rain in about an hour and the thunder was LOUD. Very unusual Seattle summer weather.

While it's blue sky, it's a bit chilly.

Prinz Christian Sund's scenery rivals Antarctica.  I asked a crew member who had sailed to Antarctica how they compared.  He said "they are much alike".  I agree.  The geologic formations, the uplifted and folded layers of rock:  I have not seen anything that compares.

The Rotterdam made a stop off this village.  The emergency boat was deployed with supplies of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other supplies.  Interesting to observe.

Your pictures are great. What camera are you using?

Thanks for the complement.

Most are taken with a Nikon P900 point and shoot with 83x zoom.  No tripod.  I transfer selected picture to my iPhone SE (second edition) for limited post processing. Selfies are taken with the iPhone. All text is tapped out on my iPhone.

As I wrote in my blog, we've sailed the fjords of Alaska, Chile, & Norway, been to Antarctica, and these are the best we've seen.

The rounded rock formations on the windward side from the extreme weather conditions along with the extreme quantity of fissures and faults make for a very scenic passage.  There were times I had to just stop taking pictures and just try to absorb the scenery with my senses.

This is definitely a scenic cruise not to be missed. Congrats to the Rotterdam for the humanitarian action.

I understand.  Sometimes, I think, my best "pictures" that I take away from a cruise are those that my brain has stored.

Thank you for this great thread and blog.

To me, Prins Christian Sund and Antarctica are both exquisitely magnificent.  But very different. PCS is like a grand fjord, confined.  Antarctica is a vast open wonderland with a variety of geography.

Well put, Barbara.  It's hard to put Antarctica in the same category as fjord cruising and that cruise should certainly be on one's bucket list.
