Capri ferry from Naples

I’d book “Capri On Your Own” through the cruise line if it’s offered. That way, you’ll get to explore on your own, but you’ll be assured you won’t miss the ship. The ferries can run late, and the afternoon ferries tend to be sold out early.

We have done that a couple of times without prebooking. Turned up at the ticket booth and booked return tickets on the fast ferry. Be sure to go to the office and book your places on the return as soon as you arrive in Capri.

Exactly what we’ve done and will doing again shortly.

We did ships excursion to Capri and Sorrento. The seas got rough while we were on Capri and our tour leader moved us to a bigger ferry to Sorrento as they were too rough for the smaller fast ferry.  I would have not liked being on our own making it back to the ship in that situation.

Thanks

I would hate to get stranded there

so we need to sail on the booked return and can’t get an earlier ferry?

You can get an earlier ferry back on your own but you'll have to pay for the extra ticket. And let your tour operator know so they're not held up looking for you.

I have just tried to book prebook tickets for early around 9am on Saturday… all showing as unavailable…. Do they hold tickets back for same day bookings?

I don’t want to do the 9 hour trip with RCL… was thinking 3 /4 hours enough … but don’t want to get stranded??

Might have to rethink and do Pompeii instead!

We’ve never pre booked always wandered down to the dock and bought tickets on the day never been an issue.

The same for the return when you dock in Capri just go and book your ticket for the return journey.

We were on the Odyssey and DIY'd to Capri...really easy.

- Got off the ship just after 8am...the ferry and ticket booths are only a 5- minute walk from the cruise terminal.

- Most of the early tickets were sold out. The tickets available were still early enough for us...we got the 9:30am departure.

- They will ask you what time you'd like to return and we told them around 1pm...we got the 1:40pm return ticket.

- Yes, you can purchase both tickets at the same time. 21.70 Euros and 19.20 Euros...not sure why tickets were priced differently.

- About 8:40am, a queue started forming for our ferry. The ferry arrived and we boarded around 9:10am.

- It took approximately an hour to the island of Capri. There's a restauant/bar on the ferry...and restrooms .

- When we arrived in Capri, we took the funicular up to the main square, 2 Euros/person/each way.

- The views from the top were simply breathtaking.

- We had plenty of time for our truly memorable visit...and had time to walk around the streets by the dock...then waited for our return ferry sitting by the beautiful (rocky/pebbles) beach.

- We were back on the Odyssey with plenty of time to spare.

We were in Naples in early July and had read many times to just walked up and buy your ticket that day.  That may work sometimes but it was a challenge the day we were there.  Tickets were sold out until late morning, which would have given us almost no time there before having to head back.  Worse, was we had a boat tour set up and were going to miss it.  Lots of stress that could have been avoided if we had bought our tickets ahead of time.  I won't go into all the details but we were able to get early tickets at the very last second and did make it to Capri in time for our boat tour.  We bought our return tickets on-line while on the ferry heading to Capri.  If you don't care about whether you actually make it to Capri, wait until you arrive.  If, however, you have your heart set on going to Capri either buy your tickets ahead of time or take the ship tour.  JMHO

You may have found them sold out because some of the cruise line groups go on the regular ferry for their excursions.

I’m glad that so many had no problems. For what it’s worth, our most recent experience solidified that we will always book cruise excursion to Capri. We had considered going independently but are so glad we didn’t end up going that route. First, all afternoon ferries showed sold out when we arrived on Capri. Then, our return ferry departed late and hit rough seas, causing it to take about 30 min longer than usual to reach Naples. If we hadn’t been booked on a cruise line excursion, we would have missed the ship. It’s a long trek back onto the ship from the ferry terminal, and we high-tailed it. They held the ship for us, thankfully. Yeah, you save money going independently, but it’s not worth the risk to us.

As for Capri vs Pompeii, to us, they’re both must dos. Our first time there, we booked the deluxe Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri excursion; it was magnificent! Now we just choose to either go to Capri or go to the Amalfi Coast. If you’re up for it, go for the gold with the 3 in 1 excursion.

Happy planning!

Which ferry did you take that you were that far from the ship? The regular ferry, or the hydrofoil? From what I understand at least one of the ferry docks is right at the cruise terminal.

As for ship excursions, even if you had been on your own, you probably would have been on the same ferry as the ship's tour anyway, as they generally leave only once an hour, so you would not have missed the ship.

Politely...

- We were able to purchase the "return" tickets at the same time...while still at the ticket booth in Naples. We had our return tickets before arriving Capri.

- What ship? Where were you docked? We must've gotten lucky...we were on the Odyssey and it was literally next door to the ferry...a 5 - minute walk.

Sure if you want to pay more than twice the price to Royal for that peace of mind.  Their excursion is also an all day affair, so unless you want to spend that much time on the island, you're stuck.  Still think it's easier and cheaper to purchase tickets yourself at the port.

I've read elsewhere that when you purchase your tickets online in advance, from either of the two main ferry operators, all you receive is an email confirmation.  Then you have to still line up at the port booth on the day of your trip to show your email and get your actual ticket... was that not your experience?

Hello from South Beach, Everyone. My husband and I made our own arrangements whenever possible. The thing to keep in mind when planning Capri and similar is the details. Where your ship is docked, distance from ferry  or other return methods, if you will be able to do it all in time allotted. On the daily program, there is  the address and phone number of who to call if you have a problem. Take it with you. Once we were on a ship  anchored off Mykonos. We tendered in, the return schedule was posted right there.  At departure,  names and cabin numbers of a few people were repeated on the public address system. This was quite awhile ago and we were on a Greek ship called the Stella Solaris. No cell phones yet. Those people missed the ship. On a trip years later, a few didn't make it back on Grenada. Once,  our ship was ready to sail except for an already late mother of two teenage boys. The mother still wanted awnted to return to a gift shop right there on the dock. The gate people told her not to do it. She turned and ran to the store anyway. The gate was closed and she was on the wrong side and there she remained as we pulled away from the dock.

When we did Capri on our own a few years ago,  we also docked (Royal Caribbean) a few minutes walk to the ferry office

Wherever did you the ferry / hydrofoil from?

The hydrofoil station is definitely only five minutes walk away.
