I think there is a reluctance by some of the staff to approach ill-mannered guests and correct their behaviour.

Not always. DH was wearing black jeans when we headed to dinner (everything else was in the laundry and we weren't really paying attention). We were turned away. DH took it gracefully.

We are getting ready to embark on our first Viking cruise.  (It's a river cruise and never been on one although we are experienced cruisers.). Can people wear what I call "dress" t-shirts (ok, sort of an oxymoron; these are nicer ones that have college name or other nice things, e.g., Hawaii, nothing offensive at all) during the day ONLY on the ship?  Can you wear these on shore excursions on Danube river cruise (excluding if going to a cathedral)?  I know I saw a guide before but I cannot seem to find it now. TYIA.

On Ocean ships, daytime clothing can be casual. T-shirts, shorts, fine. It’s just in the evening at three of the four restaurants that things get a bit more formal — collared shirts for men, etc.

No idea about River ships, but I’ve heard they’re a bit more casual than Ocean.

Other than restrictions imposed by venues (religious buildings, etc.) the rule is to be comfortable. People on shore excursions will have all manner of dress. As our Grand European tour director would say when asked similar questions, “Relax, you’re on vacation.”

Absolutely; nobody's going to come down on you for wearing a t-shirt (well, some people might, but they live for that sort of thing I suppose). We're doing our 2nd river cruise in October and I plan to wear either t-shirts or, more likely, dry-fit shirts (probably golf shirts) every day of the trip. On the first river cruise I wore t-shirts during the day, button shirts at dinner, although I saw guys in shorts more than once--and this was in early November.

We are presently onboard a river.

The casual resort is "suggested" and not mandatory.  Many are coming to dinner in shorts.  Of those some have tees or a golf shirt.

There is no gatekeeper at the door on a Viking river.

Wear what you want during the day but please abide by Viking’s dress code in the evening. Shorts and t-shirts are just not appropriate.

Absolutely.  Had no plans for that in the evening, just during the day.

Which river cruise are you on?   Have they had to skip any ports due to low water levels?   TYIA.

Capitals of Eastern Europe.

We have lots of Romanian flies and Bavarian beetles on board...but the water level is fine so far.

I’ve said this before, but as Viking moves down market to fill it’s growing fleet of ships, there is noticeably more variation in dress and behavior.

Some are seemingly OK with that.

How has the evening attire been on your current cruise?

This trip has been a bit better than in the recent past, but it’s always the outliers that you notice.

There was a reminder on the dress code in the daily, so perhaps others have similar observations.

I've traveled all over the world, on cruises, with tour groups, as a professional musician with famous entertainers; as I reflect back, I can't find a single time that someone else's attire affected my enjoyment of a meal. While I choose not to wear t-shirts to dinner, it isn't going to bother me if someone else does.

What I have found annoying, on the other hand, are people who talk too loud in a restaurant; loud complainers; people who are rude to wait staff; people who insist on making their political views known by speaking loudly about them at dinner, and last but certainly not least, Muzak. Thankfully, we don't have to work about smokers in restaurants in the U.S., and more and more, overseas as well.

With famous entertainers!!
Wow!!
Although I still can’t figure the relevance of that to the topic…

I didn't want it to sound like I was a lounge lizard, but mentioned it in an apparently-misguided (in your eyes) attempt to indicate that I've spent thousands of nights in 5-star resorts, the finest casinos in the U.S., places where someone might want to whine about dress codes.

As someone else on this thread mentioned, there is no lack of jackasses on this forum from time to time, but like those who are a**es on a cruise, I just step around them, just as I have to do in my backyard.

So glad you were a high-class entertainer instead of a mere lounge lizard…🙄

You being from Texas is more than enough to try and convict you of us lizard people status to the elite in the Northeast.

That being said, I'd play a game of beer pong with you on a Viking ship if it meant getting under the skin of people that live within 50 miles of the I-95 corridor.
