Just left celebrity constellation.

Never had a cruise with so many coughing and sneezing

On transfer bus now and folk are coughing all over the place.

And we are on 3 hour coach trip from ravenna to Venice Airport.

What joy.

I doubt this cough is related to air conditioning.

It most likely is.

As Aquahound has posted, the dry AC air dries out your sinus membranes, which are your first and best line of defense against airborne pathogens, which cause respiratory illness.  Use of a simple saline nasal spray can mitigate this dryness.

For those who recommend wiping down surfaces to prevent coughing, most respiratory pathogens are airborne not picked up from contact with surfaces.

I believe that being around people who sneeze and cough into the air is the main culprit. We were on a TA in early May, and my DH caught the crud during the last two days. I eventually caught something, but it could have been from him or the numerous folks I encountered from a week in Scotland on the trains, buses, museums, etc. Fortunately, it didn't manifest until my first day home, and it is a pretty mild case of COVID.

We are very careful about vaccines and cleaning hands and surfaces. Unfortunately, I might have used a restroom stall that was previously inhabited by a hacker or sneezer. You just never know, but I believe it is just breathing in the air of others inside buildings or structures such as buses, ships, etc.

Usually we leave for pre-dinner activities, we turn the AC to make the room colder.  Upon returning for the night, we try to turn off the A/C, or put the temp to around 75 degrees. If the air is still blowing directly on me at night, I sleep with an extra pillow on my chest to block the air.

The air conditioning may not be the root cause, as somebody had to bring the virus onboard. However, the air conditioning is a contributing factor, as in addition to cooling the air, it lowers the total humidity.

Less humid air dries out the membranes in the nose, which is your defence against airbourne viruses, etc. If you don't use a nasal spray you increase the risk of contracting an airbourne virus.

Nasal sprays are life savers. We use them to keep moist so that air borne viruses have a harder time attaching when we breathe them in. We use them on planes as well

we noticed The number of coughing and I mean deep heavily congested cough, /sneezing/p passengers went up as the week went on during our cruise last week in March. We also noticed that the majority of people made no attempt to cover their nose/mouth.  Just walk and cough!.   Spread those germs

We wore masks, which we were thankful for and we were fine.

There are many reasons someone might cough a lot  which are not contagious. Allergies and  Pulmonary issues are 2. Anytime you spend more than a few minutes in a confined space you can catch something.

If wearing a mask makes you feel comfortable and protects you  by all means do that. My pulmonary issues are not contagious and I try to cover my cough, but sometimes it just happens.

Unfortunately, humans get sick. Haven’t we all been coughing and sneezing for thousands of years?  Are we actually expecting someone to stay in their cabin for each little bug now?

I did not see any suggestion that a person should hole up in their cabin anywhere in this thread.

Got it. So it was just a PSA complaining about being around potentially sick people.

That and the likely culprit(s) that may have brought on the coughing and sneezing.

Masks are designed to protect others. They do little to help the person wearing the mask.

Are you sure about that?  Because my husband with an MD in surgical pathology disagrees with you.  But he is not a Covid specialist.  I guess he could be wrong just this once.

I am curious how a piece of material only works in one direction.

that may be true but ask any medical professional and many viruses have gotten worse. Whooping cough aka pertussis or in some areas called the 100 day cold was widepread. We think DH caught it on the plane when he removed  his mask to speak to stewardess who I am pretty sure was sick they way she presented. Trust me the 100 day cold/pertussis is not fun.  100 days of coughing til your ribs hurt or being short of breath,  3 rounds of strong antibiotics, inhalers, barely able to breathe, xrays and MRIs.  he has been left with scar tissue on his lungs.    Now he is very careful to wear a mask and has successfully avoided even a “lirrle cold”

I’m sorry to hear that.  Why is it necessary to remove a mask to speak with someone?
