RUMOR- Princess to be smoke free

Finally poking myself out of lurking this forum. As an ex-smoker/now vaper, I fully support no inside smoking but feel there should be at least 1 outdoor(right at the back,at the top, next to the bins, wherever for those of us that are unfortunately addicted to nicotine....a legal substance. I have just completed my first ever cruise and looking to pull the trigger on  the next one tomorrow as of course most of you know it too is highly addictive 😉 but if smoking was outright banned, I would be seriously reconsidering. Especially as a lot of consecutive sea days. 

 

I am in total solidarity with non smokers as even when I did smoke, I could not stand the smell of cigarettes. But as stated before, I was addicted. I don't frequent the casino but walked through it multiple times and it was stange to smell that aroma that used to be so normal in pubs,restaurants etc before the general indoor smoking bans..

I hate being exposed to smoke, but I think moving slot machines into Take 5 is a big step in the wrong direction. It does absolutely nothing to eliminate smoking in the casino area or to help those who play table games or the staff avoid exposure to second hand smoke. It also doesn't address the problem of smoke pouring into the piazza area.

 

I'll never understand why they didn't just leave the casino as it was after the restart. The decision to make the casino a smoking area again was a bad one.

And eliminating Churchills. Why not make Churchills larger and that be the smoking area on the ship. Also putting slot machines in Take 5 will ruin the venue.

In time, ships will join the many, many places that don't allow indoor smoking. They've eliminated one indoor smoking area and the casino will be next. The only question is how much longer it will take. The percentage of people who smoke grows smaller every year. What is a small minority of the population now will become a tiny few over time.

Do those people who want to go back to the “good old days” of cruising with tip envelopes and only traditional dining remember when you could smoke pretty much anywhere on a ship all the bars, your cabin, your balcony and even in the MDR. Now it is only in a few places. Seems better to me

Yes, back in the day so many people smoked everywhere and anywhere.  Thankfully, people became better informed and the vast majority of people now do not smoke.  Improvement?  Yes, but still far from great.  Princess could do much, much better.

Indoor smoking bans.....it's great to be in Countries / States / Cities where their legislators have enacted such laws in ALL indoor venues

As you may know I quit smoking 6 years ago. My post was mostly a jab at those who pine for the old ways of cruising. I do think you have to have some place indoors for smokers in certain circumstances such as bad weather which causes the outside decks to be closed

I remember being able to visit someone in hospital and merely go to the "end" of the ward to have a fag with them. :0

I watch old reruns of the Match Game from 1977/78 on the Game Show Network.  On one taping, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly and Richard Dawson were all smoking at various times caught on camera.

I'm from the States and I know this. I almost never hear an American use this term. When it was used, it was much more often used as an unkind term about a group of people. I wonder if my UK friends used it in this way. I assume they did.

Planes were the worst with smoke! We once flew cross country to attend my youngest brother's wedding. Although we were in the non-smoking section, the smoking section was directly in front of us. The people right in front of us actually did not smoke; what they did was have lit cigarettes that never entered their mouths but had the smoke go directly behind them to us. It was truly horrendous.

When Earl Weaver was manager of the Baltimore Orioles, he had a relief pitcher named Don Stanhouse.  Weaver, who was a chain smoker (smoking in the dugout, during the game), nicknamed Stanhouse "Fullpack" because he said he smoked a full pack of cigarettes while watching him pitch the ninth inning of a close game.

Yes, I knew you quit a few years ago and I am very impressed.   Not an easy thing to do.  I disagree on the indoor smoking, though.  There should be outdoor covered areas that are comfortable and welcoming, not just an ashtray on a table.  These areas would keep guests out of the rain and the sun.  Now, if you’re talking about a major storm with the doors locked, then these guests will just have to get out their willpower.  Not the worst thing in the world.

 

I hate to mention that other cruiseline, but you would be impressed with their outdoor smoking areas.  Comfy sofas and chairs, lots of coffee tables and ash trays that are emptied and cleaned constantly.  Totally covered and next to large windows.  Smokers love it!  So, it can be done.  Princess take note.

We were on P&O Australia's Pacific Explorer (former Dawn Princess) in August. Because this was a last minute booking, the best we could get was an obstructed oceanview near the casino.  When I found out that the casino was smoke free, I felt relieved.  No smoke odor. The casino was very busy every night until the wee hours.

 

Our preference are Lido deck cabins, such as the wonderful deluxe obstructed balconies and mini suites on the Lido and Marina decks on Royal-size ships.  Have also been on inside cabins on the Lido deck.  A non-smoking casino would mean that we could choose any of the main dining rooms without figuring out which one doesn't require a detour from the front stairs/elevator bank to get to the dining room without walking through the casino.

I think the vast majority of smokers are accustomed to not being able to smoke for fairly long periods of time, for example while flying or at school or work. The amount of time that absolutely all outdoor spaces have to be closed due to weather isn’t that significant.

In 2001 we were in a hurricane for 36 hours in 50 ft seas that is quite significant

Yes, for that one cruise it was true. The vast majority of cruise ships however do not sail into a hurricane with 50 ft seas. Normally a captain would alter their course to avoid that sort of situation. In fact, they are generally required to do so. I don't think it's a likely enough event to require providing indoor smoking areas for every day use.

I believe smoking policies should be developed based on common needs, not potential weather emergencies. I haven't seen a single complaint from smokers who weren't able to get outside to smoke during a storm in the nearly 20 years that Celebrity has been free of indoor smoking.  While you certainly have the right be in favor of indoor smoking areas, the majority of passengers don't smoke and don't want to be exposed to second hand smoke.  Outdoor only smoking has become the norm for many, many smokers. There are a significant number of smokers who refuse to smoke in their own homes or cars or around their children or grandchildren.

Suggestion: Enlarge Churchill's.  Put some entertainment in it.  Limit smoking to cigars only. 

Rest of the ship can be smoke free.

Lot of crew like to smoke. And hanging out where the crew smokes is a great way to get information early.
