JH hints again that changes to loyalty program changes are coming

I wasn’t combining anything.  Only that both are marketing programs. Never said to combine everything. But I am in the camp that casino comped cruises should earn loyalty points.  But that’s two separate programs.

So you want them to combine them….got it.

So it’s just a coincidence that on our 10th Carnival cruise we spent more than we ever have before in the casino and finally got a ‘free’ cruise offer?  After always spending plenty of time in there?  So it’s just a coincidence that my daughter spends a lot in the casino her last 3 Carnival cruises and gets a ‘free’ offer before disembarking on each of these 3 also?  It’s just a coincidence that her Fiancé just took his 1st Carnival cruise, spent tons in the casino and got a ‘free’ offer also?   Riigghhhtttt…. I did not say it was offered because of a win or loss. Nor did I state they are a reward or a thank you. Don’t put words in my mouth. My DH was in finance for 43 years. And we know very well how it “works” and certainly don’t need your advice or elementary lesson.   Sheezzz. 🤷‍♀️

I did not read that somebody said you did, but the history and experience is most spend less tyhe more they cruise, just the facts.

Personally, I would like to see something like what MSC has for their rewards program.  If you don't cruise on a Carnival ship within 3 years, you drop a reward level.  For instance, If you are diamond and don't cruise on Carnival for three years you drop down to platinum.  Another 3 years and you drop to gold.  I think that might winnow some of the locked in diamonds and platinums if they don't cruise every 3 years.  If they do, then they have nothing to worry about in losing status.  I would also like to see a tier between platinum and diamond (maybe emerald or something).  Makes sense to me.

You may just get your wish

I am not talking about MSC perse'.  I was just refrencing how their rewards system works and how Carnival should implement something like a time limit on their tier rewards, so that you have to actually be loyal to Carnival to maintain status.

Cruise company loyalty programs(besides MSC)are the only travel/hospitality companies that don't have time limits on their loyalty levels. A few do have lifetime status for the tippy top members but the vast majority of airline and hotel loyalty programs have expiration dates. The cruiselines really should migrate to that.

Exactly right kwokpot.  I think that is the way to go for Carnival and would continue to reward the loyal Carnival cruisers.  Maybe even beef up some of the higher tier rewards so that loyal cruisers would have a greater incentive to remain loyal.

I think most people would be okay with a program that requires continued cruising to stay at current levels. Heck even my Domino's points go away if I don't buy a pizza every six months minimum. And the drink being the first one is way better than trying to get it last day/sea day brunch.

If I am reading it correctly, according to JH, you won't be charged tax, on the free drink.  Unless I am reading it wrong, when he says "please know that this does NOT apply to your complimentary WELCOME ABOARD – WELCOME HOME drink."  Exactly what doesn't apply - the restriction or the complimentary beverage benefit itself?

I believe that line is referring to the Galveston/New York alcohol restrictions.  I took it to mean that there wouldn't be any restrictions on what you could use it on apart from the value.

I see the free drink limit is now up to $16 plus 18% gratuity.

One (1) complimentary specialty coffee, soda or alcoholic beverage with a value no greater than $16.00 + 18% gratuity. Redeemable at any venue. Will be automatically applied to the first transaction once onboard. Alcoholic beverages may only be consumed by adults of applicable legal drinking age.

It was $10 when I sailed in February. Couldn't even use it on a Mocha Chocolate Getaway.

Can’t they charge the difference?

No, the drink had to be $10 or below. What was bad was that a year prior, that drink actually was under the $10 cutoff.

I have always been “charged the difference” on the drink I order.

None of that says why they should be combined together.  Can you combine all marketing programs together?  To answer your last question, they deserve merit on their own.

Can you combine all marketing programs together? Absolutely... and if that increases profit more than keeping them separate, they should do it.

Not coincidence - just that wins/losses are only one factor, and not the biggest one.

Spending plenty of time in there is also a factor - but it's a different one than wins and losses. Total money cycled through the casino is a factor - but it isn't wins and losses.

You personal credit is a factor - but it isn't wins losses.

Etc.

I think Captain Cutbacks at Carnival HQ just had a Conniption after reading your helpful suggestion.

IMO that is exactly who Carnival is not trying to placate. Carnival doesn't want cruisers who cruise for perks, but cruisers who like the brand.

This has certainly been a lot of thought/discussion analyzing a $16 dollar drink benefit…

If it makes the masses happy, once I reach Diamond from my Casino Rate bookings, I’ll tell the bartender to use my voucher to buy a round for the person next to me.  I’ll even pay the taxes if needed.  Holy moly.

There hasn't been a whole lot of love for cruisers booked on casino rates out here lately. This doesn't make any sense to me. So you are working towards a Fanny pack and a free drink just like the rest of us, no skin off my back. If I were a gambling man I would bet a dime to a bag of donuts that the vast majority of people booked on casino rates are bringing in more revenue to Carnival than us every day Joe's. Carnival is going to have to go away from attendance based perks, like priority boarding etc or raise the bar for each category. We already see the priority boarding etc discontinued for Journeys cruises due to the saturation of high level VIFP people on these cruises.

The levels are saturated because of frequent cruisers made worse by people collecting points but not paying for the cabins. The everyday Joe doesn't stand a chance to make it to the top levels and have them intact. Particularly if Carnival was dumb enough to add an even higher level.

It won't encourage everyday Joe's since it won't be attainable and has no effect on people cruising for free. They already receive more than a loyalty program could offer.

How much money an individual gambler drops is irrelevant. The majority of Carnival cruisers aren't sailing for free and that is where the bulk of the money comes from. Carnival knows who butters their bread.

Carnival sure does know who butters their bread. That is exactly why gamblers get the casino rates. I don't gamble and have been offered exactly zero reduced rate or free cruises. These cruises are far from free for the people who really gamble. It has been said out here that booking a room barely covers the fixed costs of a cruise. So when a cruiser goes to the casino and drops their kids inheritance, Carnival entices them there with cheap/free cruises and often throws in free drinks, which encourages further indiscretion with their willingness to drop more money in the casino.

EXACTLY. It's no different than the land based casinos giving out comps,it's literally the same thing. Rooms and suites at a casino hotel that would cost $200-$1,000/nt and more are routinely given out to those who gamble. Along with free food, gifts, airfare, show tkts. I recently had a stoop sale to get rid of all the 'free' gifts that we received from the casinos

Attached is a picture of the things I had to sell.About 95%of the items in the photo are casino gifts. The black luggage3 is a TUMI bag worth $950!!! That was a free gift from the casino!PXL_20240627_1459480572.thumb.jpg.19f58cc7c3c6322e64058c4b254b3fa5.jpg

Clearly they can now, I do not think they should.

Unless something has changed, my experience is that it in fact is the net of the discount to the price of the drink.  Maybe I get special treatment …..😉

The bread gets buttered from all, not just casinos.  I would agree that they entice these cruisers to continue to lose by giving them discounted cruises.  I do not think that it ties to anything else.

I always get a long island for my VIFP drink and paid a buck and some change because it exceeded the limit. My last cruise in May they had raised the allowed amount and it was actually " free" .
