Sails Up Posted December 2, 2006 #51 Share Posted December 2, 2006 This may seem like a silly question, but, does it make a difference if you go "up" the river or "down" the river? We have not done any river cruising and are considering a trip on the Seine next fall from Lyon to Avignon or Avignon to Lyon...any help you can provide would be appreciated... Rare Hlitner Posted December 8, 2006 #52 Share Posted December 8, 2006 I noticed a couple of posts about hotels so thought I would share an experience. We will be in Amsterdam for 2 nights pre-cruise this spring and decided to look for a reasonable price (hard to get these days). We used Priceline and bid $122 per night (2 nights) and got the Amsterdam Marriott which is a good hotel in a great location. When you add-in the taxes and fees that hotel is costing us a total of $270 for 2 nights which is a darn good deal in Amsterdam. Hank
LunaSeaRetreat Posted December 10, 2006 #53 Share Posted December 10, 2006 Just booked Danube cruise with Budapest & Prague with Gate 1 on the Bolero on October 10. I was surprised to find out only D category cabins were available. And I thought I was early! Cynthia
marycang Posted December 11, 2006 #54 Share Posted December 11, 2006 To: AWED23 So what size are the suites and what is the price? Would love to know for a comparison check.
msmeltz Posted December 14, 2006 #55 Share Posted December 14, 2006 Hi Bill, I see you were on an Avalon Cruise this year. We are booking the Poetry for July 19...Category A...going from Budapest to Prague. I was wondering if you have any imput about traveling with Avalon. Was it a good cruise? marycang Posted December 16, 2006 #56 Share Posted December 16, 2006 TO: LunaSeaRetreat That doesn't sound right, unless suites were set aside for some reason. We booked a category A, May 19, 2007 cruise on Nov. 8, 2006 with Gate 1 and the agent at Gate 1 said pick any one there are all available. If you booked through a travel agent, I would call Gate 1 and see what is available. Mary
LunaSeaRetreat Posted December 16, 2006 #57 Share Posted December 16, 2006 Mary I first tried to book online and when they only showed me a choice of D cabins, I called Gate 1. The agent assured me they were all booked. She put a note on my booking that I would like to upgrade to a B if it became available. She didn't sound hopeful. captgeo Posted December 16, 2006 #58 Share Posted December 16, 2006 We've just put down a deposit on Uniworld's Douro River cruise in Portugal with a 6-day, pre-cruise trip through Spain in early October. We did a river cruise from Amsterdam to Viena a few years ago with Uniworld and were very satisfied. Too soon to know what airline, etc. but we like British Air's "World Plus" service -- bigger seat and more leg room than coach for just a bit more $$. We're in our early 70s and just can't take 8 or more hours jamed in the back of the plane. Would love to hear from anyone who has taken this trip, or anyone booked in 2007 before us. Best wishes, captgeo
macca Posted January 1, 2007 #59 Share Posted January 1, 2007 G'day Mary & all We have booked our first ever organised tour & River Cruise on the MS Sound Of Music with APT from Budapest to Amsterdam on Jul 14th for the following reasons... 1. We can have a cabin with french balcony on upper deck 2. It's a newer ship 3. APT are an Australian company 4. They offer a full day tour of the filming sites for the Sound Of Music movie 5. We love Europe & the thought of seeing all these places without touching our luggage overwhelms the thought that we may get sea sick! 6. Before &/or after the 15 day trip we will catch up with our daughter in Tuscany and friends from Sweden will meet us for dinner in Amsterdam 7. We love meeting new people, visiting Churches & Casinos, food & drink Hope to meet some of you in person and if this works out OK would love to cruise the Nile in 2008. Mike. joek Posted January 1, 2007 #60 Share Posted January 1, 2007 Sounds great! That's the way to do it....add on pre or post stays and see more. We took our first river cruise in April 06, second in Sept, both Grand Circle. Loved them and have two booked in 07, April in Holland (Gate1) and July in Eastern Europe (Grand Circle). Old Salty Dog Posted January 2, 2007 #61 Share Posted January 2, 2007 We're booked on Vantage's River Navigator for Sept. 17, Basel to Amsterdam on the Rhine and Moselle. We've done one river cruise with Vantage previously from Budapest to Amsterdam and it was excellent. We've also done three Ocean cruises with Vantage, also excellent. They include land stays before and after which saves a lot of trip planning time. Anyone else on the Sept. 17 Vantage cruise from Basel?
pacmom Posted January 2, 2007 #62 Share Posted January 2, 2007 If you have not booked your cruise yet, consider going east to west. The weather goes just the opposite, so you will go thru the weather instead of it following you. Pat
Guest debbiejohncruise Posted January 6, 2007 #63 Share Posted January 6, 2007 I currently have three brochures staring at me. My first choice is Amadeus, then Viking, then Uniword. I think the Christmas Markets interests me most but I have never traveled in the winter. For those of you who have done the Christmas Markets, could you let me know which one is best? Thanks Don't know where you would be travelling but I have been to the following Christmas Markets (living in Europe for 10 years helps!) 1. Nurnberg, Germany (very nice one!) 2. Strasbourg, France 3. Cologne, Germany 4. Aachen, Germany 5. Ypres, Belgium 6. Brussels, Belgium Come to think of it, I have never seen a bad Christmas market! Lots in Holland as well. Every village seems to have one too! You will enjoy them. Debbie

paterry Posted January 22, 2007 #69 Share Posted January 22, 2007 We will be on the Avalon Tranquility Magnificent Europe cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam on May 12. We are two couples, all in our 60's and retired, who have cruised on the ocean a fair bit and are looking forward to trying something new. Have heard great things about the Avalon River cruises - really nothing at all negative. Pat in Toronto, Canada
letsgo39 Posted January 22, 2007 #70 Share Posted January 22, 2007 MACCA, Sorry I did not see your question sooner. In my case I just go to Avalonwaterways web site and act like I am going to book the cruise. I choose the ship and the date. You eventually get where it will show if the cruise is available and what cabins are still available. Then just stop there.I don't know anything about the other companies but with Avalon it is easy to see what is still out there.
