Vaccinations for Canadian cruise?

Don't feel too bad, neighbors. Americans don't know much about America, either. I heard a woman ask about the exchange rate in Alaska once.

I believe many Americans think that New Mexico is a different country as well. ;)

Cheers,

Peter

Have you ever noticed that New Mexico car license plates say " New Mexico USA" ? No other state does that.

I had to post it here! One of the best commercials ever!

Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....

I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....

and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,

although I'm certain they're really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.

I speak English and French, not American.

And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.

I believe in peace keeping, not policing,

diversity, not assimilation,

and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,

and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!

The first nation of hockey!

and the best part of North America

My name is Joe!!

And I am Canadian!!!

Nope, no extra protection needed for Canada. Maybe a coat, but that is all you'll need. sorry just being silly about the coat comment.

Not a coat..you need a Maple Leaf hockey jersey!! And don't forget the toque, eh, you hoser...LOL

This thread has made my day.

Isn't canada part of England????

We are part of the British Commonwealth. Our political set up (having a Prime Minister instead of a President) is the same as England. Our figurehead of state is the Queen although she really has no power. We are a completely separate country from England and share no commonalities except for the Queen. Their parliment has no power or influence on ours. In fact, over the past several years the US has had more ties to England than Canada has as we refused to partake in the war in Iraq.

As the Italians in New York call it "uppa you es" or were they saying something else??? Hmmmmmm, the mind wanders. :D

Seriously folks, I think the OP was just a little concerned by a statement in the booklets sent by Princess. It is in all documents and may have just confused her for a bit. At least she took the time to read the information and pay attention to what it said (even if it did not pertain to her particular cruise) It is amazing the amount of people that show up to fly or cruise and are shocked that they have to have a passport or their boarding passes or their tickets or their id's. On a South America cruise two years ago that we were on, they left 10 or more passengers behind because they did not have the proper visas or vaccinations. If they had read the material, they would have known. that, my friends, can be costly.

My dad was born in Canada and was raised working in the family business. They cut huge blocks of ice from the local lake and packed it in sawdust from the local mill and stored it in "icehouses" so they could sell it in the summer when the temperature got into the 50's and 60's. Guess they would be out of a job now, at least I think they have electricity and refrigerators in Halbrite now.

A good 10 minutes of dinner conversation can be taken up in response to the question "Where is Manitoba"? We used to respond with "we're just north of North Dakota". We then we had to go on to explain where North Dakota is.

And people wonder why we vacation in Cuba... ;)

Why do you believe that?

Your question is right, of course, though a leading one-- it was a different country until it was occupied and annexed by the USA. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Wink

San Francisco CA was still in New Spain, when my Spanish ancestors arrived there from Jalisco.

I guess history begins where you open the book.

BUT: the OP didn't want to hear all these rants, or dodge the prairie oysters. She DID read the material from Princess, and DID have an honest question (I'll bet she's not even reading this thread anymore, though!)

I'm fine with that too but heck we're talking about Canada not a Third World country and the OP says they are from California. I would imagine Californians are more enlightened on world geography since their proximity to Vancouver.

Hi Ron: How in the heck are you. This thread gave me a chuckle. By the way we here in the U.S. call them sofas or couchs not chesterfields either. I have not used that word in years.:D

Marilyn

Actually, I thought it was backwards. I still call them chesterfields. In the US a chesterfield is a cigarette, I think.

Isn't canada part of England????

Nope, we are going to buy them in a few years though.

And yes, Canada / England kicked butt in the war of 1812. Silly US, starting a war with us.

No Joke, before the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City people from New Mexico calling to order tickets were told that the order had to be made with thier home country Olympic Committee and were given the number in Mexico City. One of them demanded a supervisor who told him the same thing.

That is why they have USA on their license plates.

Oh God I am laughing my head off. Then it reminded me of a joke this man told me on a tender while visiting Grand Caymen a long time ago. He was American and he told me this

You know how Canada got it's name? No I said. They put all the consonants in a bag and started drawing them out. First one was

C - eh -- second was
N - eh -- third was
D - eh

But really folks, we found when we sailed out of San Fran last year, most people on the cruise were very knowlegeable about Canada. Most were from California. However every time we've sailed out of Florida, it seems we have to answer a lot of questions about Canada.

Our favorite thing is to brag about who is Canada, i.e. Jim Carey, Michael J Fox, Donald Sutherland, and so so many more!! EH!

Actually one comment I heard a lot yes, you don't sound Canadian, you don't say EH... yes it is my proper upbringing.. he he :D

Well, let me tell you. When I was thirteen years old in San Francisco, I listened in to my father's zenith Oceanic short wave radio, and found CBC -- from Vancouver, no doubt -- and I, God's gift to the intellectual world that I thought I was in 1950, said to myself, Good grief, they talk the same way we do!

I had thought, thanks to Hollywood, that Canadians all had French accents and wore plaid shirts, spat a lot, said By Gar, and were all villains. My French-Canadian wife, in later years, cured me of those misconceptions.

So, no, Californians are NOT more enlightened about world geography -- heck, I was taught in a college prep school in California that America won the war of 1812, and didn't discover until I moved to Canada that Ontario is still fighting that war.

Another poster mentioned the difficulty pinpointing North Dakota -- I run into that all the time, with other states -- telling friends and others from the states that my wife and I live due north of Rochester,NY, on the north bank of Lake Ontario, elicits more blank stares than nods of recognition.

I hesitate to call this provincialism, or parochialism, or, worse, ethnocentrism; but when so many Americans can't show you where Baghdad or Kabul or, you fellow Canadians, Kandahar, is, it gets a little scary.

Time to end this thread -- it's less and less about cruising, and more and more about politics, ¿verdad?

Hi Gang,
Well it's amazing to see what a light hearted jab can do to provide entertainment for a lot of us  .
Hey there lil mosquito,
You hit the Molson's can right on the head girl...that's where I got the idea for the thread. What part of the Prairies are you in anyway?
Marilyn,
Great to hear you again girl...how's Pat doin and your last cruise? Kath & I along with Roy,Karen, Jayne and Jim booked the 31 day SYD/SFO cruise on the "Dawn" on 18 Apr 09. So much going on...cancelled cruise from before all on ours. I believe now the ship's sold out. Couldn't be bothered with a balcony for the Trans Pacific so we're second cabin from the bow, starboard side in an oceanview on Plaza deck (lowest)...and I don't care. We hardly used our balcony even on the Coral Trans Canal. Great itinerary.
Now Marilyn, you know I'm not a smoker but yes I believe Chesterfields were cigarettes.

Well contrary to what many think, British Columbia (you know where you get on the cruiseship to go to Alaska) is not located in South America. God this is fun!!!

Ciao for now!!!

Here is a link to a Canadian beer ad some of you might find amusing :)

And here is a spoof of that same ad by William Shatner (Captain Kirk, a Canadian by the way).
