Official new order of 4 ships plus 2 in option

curious that they didn't go "big" or as "big" as Escape/Joy or that they didn't join the LNG party...also, I wonder if Meyer Werft is none to pleased, since all of NCL's recent ships were built by them...

 

 

Bigger ship can't be made in Italy , maybe another order for french yard or the Meyer verft yard in Finland

I forgot that they have the 2019 newbuild option with Meyer Werft, which would be the 4th ship in the Breakaway Plus class (2019 ship, Bliss, Joy, Escape)...or does this new order with Fincantieri put the 2019 ship to bed?

I don't think these will replace any older ships especially since NCL doesn't own any second hand cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The older ships being quite smaller have their own niche markets now. Carnival Fantasy class for example isn't going anywhere when the newer Carnival Splendor is leaving the fleet next year. Looking forward to seeing how the new "smaller" ship class appear.

I know that this is "old news" for some people, and that this particular thread is from February. I was just doing a quick search regarding new ships for NCL here on CC, and this thread came up, so instead of starting a new thread on the same topic I just decided to post on the already existing thread. :p

 

I must say that I was very happy when I learned from one of the officers on board during our last cruise a few weeks ago, that NCL have ordered four new ships that are NOT in the "mega-ship-class". I know that I am not alone in preferring the Jewel class ships when it comes to size, instead of the Breakaway-plus-size. So even though this might be "old" news to some of you, I still believe that others will be as happy as I am regarding the new ships being more similar to the Jewel class ships when it comes to size... :D

I don't know what they told you onboard, but the Project Leonardo ships are 140,000GT and as such, are closer to being Mega-ships (Breakaway is 145,655GT) then they are to being Jewel class ships (Jewel is 93,502GT)

The 4 ships are closer in size to the Breakaway class than the Jewel class.

 

Of course you are right, I kind of got "hung up" in the number of passengers (max around 3000 instead of around 4000). I have been on the Epic and the Escape myself (not Breakaway or Getaway), both with a max number of passengers of around 4200 - and in my mind I believe that is what I was thinking about when I thought the 4 new ships would be closer to Jewel class ships. Sorry about the confusion...

The passenger numbers usually listed aren't the actual "maximum" number of guests. The actual number is much higher. Breakaway/Getaway can easily have closer to 5,000 guests during the summer. Even more for Escape and Epic.

 

How crowded Project Leonardo will "feel".....too early to tell.

My guess...TOTAL GUESS...is that the Haven will be at the aft of the ship. The lower circular section will be the Haven restaurant/lounge, above it will be the Haven pool and the staterooms above that will be the aft-facing DOS/OS with the other Haven staterooms filling out the sides (circular bump out).

 

I have no clue based on the pictures that NCL has released.

The passenger-to-gross-tonnage comparison should be comparable to Jewel class, hence the earlier comparison. Imagine BA/GA with 1,200 fewer passengers at double occupancy.

Yes, almost the same tonnage as BA but with 600 less cabins. Hope this means more bells and whistles, like the RCCL Anthem of the Seas. I enjoyed the bump cars, North Star, great indoor Solarium, never got to surfing or sky diving, but it was a great design with the casino on the third deck with cabins and two restaurants on that deck. Would be nice to not have to walk through the casinos on the new ships, the only other smoking area was in a corner of deck 14, away from the pools on that deck. I suppose it will be a few years before we see any deck plans. Besides the usual two deck theatre in the front of the ship there were two other performance areas which had a balcony a deck up from the stage. With 4,300 on board the Anthem, the only day it felt crowded was when the muster had everyone on decks 4 and 5 and then ten minutes later everyone was trying to get to upper decks for the sail away. We walked from deck 5 to deck 14.

Absolutely Beautiful. Perfect size. Think about this. Bigger isn't necessarily better for us the passenger. The ratio of passengers to public space square footage is a true gauge of your experience. Oasis Class including Harmony and Symphony are awesome, however the public spaces are very crowded as the number of passengers in the public spaces is a high ratio compare to a 2500-3k pax ship. I think these will provide more of a Jewel class feel and experience which, is really a great experience. Add to that Haven areas and this is truly a great sign of things to come for NCL. BAPlus class from Meyer Werft will continue to be delivered bigger and better to NCL for that market but this is a superb investment to diversify the experience.

 

Much like the airlines and maximizing seat pitch (legroom and number of seats per square foot) the same holds true for the cruise ships. There's a market for the A380 or 747-8 and a market for a B737/A319.
