What little extras do you take on your cruise

Recommended Posts

We don't bring many "special" things, but here are a few that we after many years of cruising have learned it is practical to bring with us:

* A highlighter/textmarker to outline in the Freestyle Dailies what of the activities we would like to participate in that day (it is very easy to "forget" or miss out of things otherwise)

* Magnets to put things like the Freestyle Daily or the itinerary list on the wall in the cabin

* A couple of "hooks" that can be attached to any surface

* A lightweight "organizer" with many small pockets that can hang on the closet door, bathroom door, etc.

We stay away from magnets, since if you place one next to your car keys, the keys may not function anymore.

We take small packets of Tide wash in the sink to hand wash small clothing items.

We take a ziplock bag with Imodium, Advil and Benadril. If you have to buy this on the ship, it is very expensive.

I take a lot of things but one thing I forgot last time and was really missing was a travel mug for coffee. I usually run up and get a huge cup of coffee in the morning and bring it back to the cabin. I won't forget this time!

camera supplies (batteries, cards, cleaner wipes, case) -- back up camera?

I forgot to include a very important item in the first list I posted:

Extra battery for the camera, that we bring with us every time we leave the ship. We learned this the "hard way" when we were on an excursion to Rome on a Sunday, and our camera after we had just taken a couple of photos said "Change Battery" and we didn't have an extra battery with us... This was a few years ago, when the cell phones didn't have good camera included like they have today - but we still always bring with us extra battery, in addition to our cell phones. Better safe than sorry..... ;)

A highlighter to mark activities in newsletter we are thinking about doing. Highlighter shows up much better than pen does.

We take long cruises, so a small sewing kit for emergency repairs.

A self-made first aid kit of OTC remedies: aspirin, cold meds, anti-itch cream, cramp cream/pills for hubby's periodic leg cramps, antibiotic cream, various bandaid sizes, meclazine, anti-diarrhea med, Alka Seltzer and/or Peptobismol, antibiotic in case of my brochitis, dental stuff.

Most of these can be bought in ship shops (very expensive) or gotten from ship Dr but if I need them in middle of night, I want them at hand.

Shout wipes for getting at spots right away.

Hand sanitizing wipes. These are especially handy after handling casino chips.

I always keep a trip journal so besides the journal book I take small scissors and scotch tape for putting in postcard photos and newsletter articles of interest.

A very small LED flashlight.

Extra purse-size tissue packs for my purse.

An extra pair of glasses for hubby and for me as well as repair kit.

A small hanging toiletries bag.

Since NCL does not provide separate conditioner or hand lotion, I bring those.

I also prefer bar soap for hands and face so I bring a small bar for the sink.

A thermal cup for coffee (we don't pay for balcony cabin so no coffeemaker).

We pour our continental breakfast room service coffee or buffet coffee into it to keep the coffee hot.

Body lotion, aloe vera, sunscreen, aspirin, Tums, toothpicks / floss picks, bandages, alcohol wipes, tampons because those things are costly on the ship when you're having a emergency or about to have one because you don't have it.:(

Deep conditioner for the frizzy hair because sand, water and sun can be brutal to the hair.

Shower pouf, flip flops for the shower, shower cap because they make feel comfortable. Regarding the flip flops - if its not my home shower, I assume all other shower floors are just not clean enough for my bare feet. :o

Pens, highlighters, index cards / postits - for the dailies and sometimes you have to leave a note to the room stewards. A pen is always to good to have when signing off stuff especially drinks. :p

Next Trips - Insulated Coffee mug and 2 refillable water bottles for cost saving plus not needing to run back & forth so often for tea or coffee. :D

I bring a small solar / windup am /fm /wb Radio. ( from LL Bean )

It has a light too!

And it can be used to charge a cell phone in a pinch. :D

I love listening to local radio throughout the islands.

Even if I don't know the language, I can still enjoy the music :):)

I forgot one of the most important items. Clorox wipes that kill norovirus. I also bring gloves and wipe down the cabin when we arrive, including the toilet. I have had the virus several times, including once while pregnant. I hate that virus. I can take most illness in stride, but norovirus completely incapacitates me.

I buy the wipes on Amazon and they are EPA registered to kill noro.

In addition to the above, I always take my own coffee and some sort of drip coffeemaker that just uses hot water. Latest find is an Aeropress. Not very big, easy cleanup and makes great coffee.

My wife takes a couple of the 8 1/2 x 11 size interoffice envelopes to put the Dailies, excursion ticket receipts, port maps/guides and other misc papers that we wish to take home with us. These slide neatly into the outside or inside pocket of the suitcase when its time to pack up and go home.

I always travel with some duck tape and wrapping tape with me. I take a couple of the "junk" sample credit cards that frequently come in the mail and wrap tape around each so that I end up with a couple of feet on each. They don't take up much room in my carryon and have come in extremely helpful when a suitcase rips or splits for a quick repair. I've also used the wrapping tape to tape together a couple of 12 packs of soda that I'm taking onboard.

Thanks everyone for all these tips, some I would have taken anyway but others I wouldn't have thought of - and won't take up much space either. As always, CC members come up trumps!

We have a balcony cabin - do we therefore have tea/coffee making facilities? If yes, what is provided with it?

We always take Ziploc bags on any vacation. It seems we always end up using one for one reason or another.

We don't bother with multi-plug extension cords and such. They are too huge and bulky. Most of what we need to plug in are things we need to charge via USB (phones, ipad, camera, fitbits, etc), so we bring this:

Other than that, we've never needed any extras for any cabin.
