Naming of Godmothers

Why does most if not all cruise lines use a famous person to be the Godmother of there ships?

Why not choose there most loyal guests like the ones who have cruised the most days on the cruise line?

Just my thought.

A cheap publicity stunt to attach a famous name to the ship and generate a news article is anyone will run it.

Yup, I doubt Maude Williams from Sheboygan being named the godmother of a ship is really going to get anyone’s juices flowing.

To be honest I can care less who the Godmother is. I don't sail a ship because of the Godmother I sail because of the ship. Is it true that Godmother's of ships get to sail that ship free?

That would be a reason to want the honor

That would certainly explain why cruise lines don't award the honor to their most loyal/frequent cruisers....think of all that lost cruise revenue! :D

But if just one news outlet or magazine picks the story up and publishes it, you have free publicity without any expense.

Unlikely. I cannot imagine anyone famous wanting to sail surrounded by fans unless they were being paid for it (Star Trek cruises, Broadway at Sea, etc.)

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean you have to disparage the entire nautical history and ceremony behind it.

You could use Google or Wikipedia to try to learn something.

Going on Carnival cruise number twelve and I have no idea of who any of the Godmothers were, nor does it matter.

...and here we thought you were the ultimate reference for all ship godmothers.....

I'll do you one better. Coming up on my 21st Carnival cruise and I didn't even know there were Godmothers of the ships.

This! I'm amazed at the number of people that all of a sudden have an issue with something so traditional.

And what's this favoritism toward Godmothers sponsoring ships? Shouldn't there also be Godfathers involved, too?

<Mafia don voice>

"Hey! I'll make ya a cruise offer you can't refuse!"

-or-

"Gotta tell ya, bub. Don't cut in line at the buffet, and don't hog chairs on the Lido Deck....OR ELSE!" :D
