eshum953 Posted January 19, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2018 this isn't about a cruise or anything, it's just that I and some friends had the idea of making a synthetic island out on the sea to form a new country/continent. we are aware of the conditions including EEZ and materials. the only problem is that I and my friends are obsessed with the internet and need to know how far out we can go before we lose internet connection. teknoge3k Posted January 19, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2018 You have to have something to feed your wifi signal. Even at that point, wifi doesn't really have a great distance. You may get 100' from your base.
Shorex Posted January 19, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Just contract for a satellite connection like the cruise ships do.

chengkp75 Posted January 19, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2018 That must be some good ganja. ;) Top notch. I remember when the Brits were going out on old WWII anti-aircraft towers offshore and declaring themselves independent. Didn't work for them. OP has some serious misunderstanding about what wifi is. Even with max power, optimum wavelength, and the best parabolic antenna, "line of sight" is the rule of thumb for wifi frequencies, or 20 miles or less (that would be with you and your "island" generator feeding the signal). And most wifi from land would be about 100 meters.
AmazedByCruising Posted January 19, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Top notch. I remember when the Brits were going out on old WWII anti-aircraft towers offshore and declaring themselves independent. Didn't work for them. It worked for quite a while though, and caused UNCLOS to specify that manmade towers don't count as an island. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand OP may like www.seasteading.org. bigwally Posted January 19, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Point to point wireless, 6GHz. Range of up to 50 miles. Both antennas must be in the line-of-site with no significant obstructions.

chengkp75 Posted January 19, 2018 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Line of sight from where? Op wants to create his own continent. :D Gonna be one heck of a "synthetic island" to support that 400 foot high tower.

Bizmark'sMom Posted January 20, 2018 #14 Share Posted January 20, 2018 An off shore oil rig would probably support that tower. But they still have to power the thing. And find an old oil rig that isn't owned by somebody.
navybankerteacher Posted January 20, 2018 #15 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Line of sight from where? fishywood Posted January 20, 2018 #16 Share Posted January 20, 2018 (edited) While I am enjoying some of the unintended hilarity, I now understand completely why some other discussion forums I occasionally visit have a blanket ban on "crayonista" type discussions...
