Toshi-bay Posted July 16, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Hello. This is my first posting. We will be on Goldenprincess for Akaska in September. We dont know how we can see the Sun. Do we need Sunglasses? Thank you in Advance.
Rare ncovert Posted July 16, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Sunglasses were helpful for us on our Alaskan cruise. They don't take much room and if you are sensitive to light you might want to bring a pair.
SadieN Posted July 16, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Yes, you will need sunglasses. Especially if you decide to go up on the glacier. The reflected sun off of the glacier can cause sun blindness.
sherryf Posted July 16, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Yes, definitely bring them! The sun does come out in Alaska, and the glare off water and ice can be intense.
chipmaster Posted July 16, 2011 #5 Share Posted July 16, 2011 If it isn't rainy and overcast it will be sunny. As another poster said ice, water and such put up a lot of reflected light and glare. Bring glasses and hope you get to use them :D Hello. This is my first posting. We will be on Goldenprincess for Akaska in September. We dont know how we can see the Sun. Do we need Sunglasses? BOSN Posted July 16, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 16, 2011 The only time you may not really need sun glasses in Alaska is between January and March. But I would still bring them. As already mentioned, there is still glare off the glaciers. During the harsh winter period, the sun may not rise until 10 or 10:30, and start going down about 2 pm. During the summer though, I found it does not really get dark. From around 10 pm until around 3 am, it is like dusk. It was amazing to be out doing things at 2 am, and it was not dark. Thoughm if it is overcast or raining, the visibility is decreased.
cb at sea Posted July 16, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 16, 2011 You should wear sunglasses whenever you are in the sun...sun doesn't just damage your skin....it can damage your eyes! Always wear polarized glasses!

Rare Keith1010 Posted July 16, 2011 #11 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Yes, definitely take sun glasses with you. It's not only good in port but also on the ship when on the open deck. Keith
dpump Posted July 16, 2011 #12 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Had to chuckle, I think those of us in the Pacfic Northwest HAVE to wear sunglasses. We're not used to seeing that bright ball in the sky! Bring your sunglasses.
Putterdude Posted July 17, 2011 #13 Share Posted July 17, 2011 I would certainly advise bringing sunglasses on an Alaskan cruise. You may well need them at sea and if you are going on any excursions that will but you on or close to snow or glaciers. By the way, welcome to Cruise Critic and I hope you have a wonderful cruise to Alaska.:)

CRUISE4JANE Posted August 6, 2011 #21 Share Posted August 6, 2011 The sun does shine in Alaska. Thanks for this info. My husband would love to go on an Alaskan Cruise and all I say is, "I need light and will not go where it is gloomy all day, plus cold". Isn't that strange for me to say that as the best time for me is at night. I can stay up until 1:30-2:00 most of the time. Strange :rolleyes::rolleyes:. Dachsie5 Posted August 7, 2011 #24 Share Posted August 7, 2011 Yes! Alaska has sun, and reflection. Anyway, you should always bring sunglasses on a cruise! There is a reflection even from the pool.
