Stuffy Cruise?

We are an older couple who are young at heart and love to chill out at a bar and just people watch on a cruise. We wonder if Celebrity is a "stuffy " cruise line never have sailed on her. We have been on a Royal Caribbean cruise a week ago and loved it. We don't want to go to lectures for "entertainment". We want good food and plenty of night life. We don't retire until late at night, after 12-1AM usually. We are bar hopping people. Would we like Celebrity cruises?

Maybe, maybe not. We have sailed Royal but prefer celebrity. Night life- some cruise are dead by 11 (as was our last Royal Cruise with over 600 kiddos). Other times we have danced until 1:30 on Celebrity. A lot depends on the length of the cruise and itinerary. Shorter cruises in the Caribbean are livelier than 15 night port intensive cruises in Europe or Asia.

IMHO food is better on Celebrity, entertainment the edge goes to Royal. Service and crew is better on Celebrity. We think of a Celebrity as a adult cruise line and a Royal as a family cruise line.

Either way you can’t go wrong, after all it is a cruise- you don’t have to cook, clean or make your own drink

We’ve cruised Celebrity numerous times and have never found it ‘stuffy’. Not a ‘party’ cruise, but we’ve set at good bars for the evening, danced with live music and met some very open and interesting people. One of the things we like about Celebrity is the common areas are low key and feel less crowded than we’ve experienced on other Lines.

I’d suggest you give it a try. Never been on a bad cruise, even on a Line we would not go on again for various reasons.

We were on our first Celebrity cruise in September 2017. Not stuffy at all. In fact, it was just right...so booked another one while on board. Have never done that before.

I think you'd probably be happier sticking with Royal Caribbean (RCI) for now. Celebrity and RCI are sister brands of the same corporation (RCCL) and both are good cruise lines, but have their differences. RCI has a lot more activities and nightlife than Celebrity (where the emphasis is on having a slightly more upscale, relaxing vacation). Some Celebrity sailings have a more active than normal group of passengers, but often there is not a lot going on past 11pm. The food, service and ambiance are all a bit nicer on Celebrity (but I have not found it at all stuffy) but if "plenty of night life" is important to you, there is a good chance you will be disappointed in that area. The martini bar often still has good energy later in the evening, but other bars can be hit-or-miss late at night.

For the type of night life the OP prefers, I suggest that Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships cannot be beat. We just sailed on Harmony of the Seas last December and after many sailings on Celebrity I was blown away by all that was going on especially after ten. The contrast was amazing.

But then I was happy to return to Celebrity's more laid back pace. We are D+ on Royal and E+ on Celebrity, so we have sailed both lines often. I think it is nice to switch back and forth depending on what we are looking for, but I feel that high energy evenings are more apt to be found on Royal Caribbean.

I agree. I can only offer a comment based on sailing with Cunard and once on Celebrity Eclipse. Off on a western med cruise in Sep on Silhouette. My hubby and i work in the music and theatre business all our days and nights, 7 days a week are made up with teaching, performing , visits to theatre most fri and sat nights supporting pupils so when we go on a cruise we are not looking for entertainment, socializing in bars and clubs etc as this in our normal life . Celebrity is perfect for us as we can chill with each other until the early hours and actually talk with each other. Its horses for courses

I’m currently on Silhouette TA where the crowd is much older but let me tell you everyone here they are all young at heart and consecutively have been out and about until the wee hours in the morning, everyone has been so kind and wonderful I couldn’t of asked for a better cruise, I am currently solo on board and 22 so I’m not the typical age demographic on board but I’m having the time of my life.

I don’t think you’ll find it stuffy at all. The nightlife options are probably less varied and limited to the Martini Bar and Sky Lounge, but on our last cruise the Sky Lounge was open until well after 1am. The casino bar is open late too but I never spend any time in there. We’ve actually been more bored on Royal cruises than Celebrity. We’re in our 30’s so we are definitely on the younger end of the spectrum for Celebrity.

We do have a future cruise booked on Royal and I am nervous it will feel like an overall downgrade coming from Celebrity.

I've sailed with Celebrity a number of times and it can vary. I was on the Reflection this last January and I did find a number of stuffy guests who thought of themselves to be above others. This being said, i'm in my late 20's and may have been treated differently as I do not fit with Celebrities main demographic.

We were on our first Celebrity cruise in March and it wasn't stuffy at all. It depends what you define as stuffy. Most of the people on board were laid back and friendly. We had a lovely quiet cabin and the entertainment and bars were fine for our needs. many RCI cruises that we have been on have been the same or even quieter in the evenings.

The only area of the ship I find a bit "stuffy" is the Ensemble lounge. Our group calls it the lounge where fun goes to die. Usually a bunch of older folks listening to soft Jazz or Chamber music (not our idea of a good time). If you are having too much fun in there you will "get the look" from the old cranks. The nightlife can be a bit challenging on Celebrity but I've also found the same thing on some RCCL cruises. After 11pm the crowd will thin dramatically most nights and there will only be a couple of places with something going on. The Sky Lounge, The Martini Bar and possibly Quasor night club (it usually empty unless you get a cruise with some younger passengers). The Silent Discos are usually packed and if they have a party by the pool it's usually busy too. But even those rarely go past 12. On our last cruise (great Barrier Reef last month), there was a pretty good group most nights that liked to close the clubs down. We were out several nights past 2am (and one past 3am). But that's rare on Celebrity.

Agree, stick with Royal if entertainment is important.

We absolutely love Celebrity - we can have that little bit of extra glamour and still have a good time in the evenings. The martini bar is great fun and we also spend time in the nightclub and the sky lounge. We are both in our early 60's and did not go to bed until after midnight every night on our last cruise in the Caribbean March 2018. Hope this helps.:D

We were on our first X cruise in March after 3 RCL. It was without a doubt the most relaxing cruise we have ever been on.

I've been in bed by 10:30 on Carnival ships and I'm in my late 40's. I've also been up until 3 in the morning in the casino.

I'm actually looking forward to trying Celebrity. My son is 24 and he's looking forward to it. We like to have a few drinks and have a good time but we also like the fact that there shouldn't be a lot kids running up and down the halls at all hours of the night. We can get along with anyone. My son seems to have a knack for fitting in with the older crowd so it should be a relaxing, fun filled cruise! We are also looking forward to the food. Carnival's food has gone down hill over the past few years in our opinion.

I would never describe Celebrity as stuffy at all. That said, the liveliness of the crowd tends to vary by length of cruise. 7-10 days or fewer? A little bit younger demographic and more lively nightlife. 14 nights or longer? The demographic will skew quite a bit older. I have been on several 14/15 nights and I would say the average age ranged from 65-75 on some of them, and 75-80+ on others. Are there some in this group who still like to party and stay out late? Definitely! But there will not be as much going on as there is on the shorter cruises, especially if you hit one of the cruises where the average age is 75 and up (and yes, they exist - I have sailed on a couple). I am not being critical (am retired myself), just my observations from many recent cruises.
