Where do the ships go to hide from the hurricanes?

There are so many ships in the Caribbean now. Where do they go to get out of harms way?

Anywhere the hurricane isn't- the revise their itineraries to stay away from the storm. In the case of Harvey they had to stay at sea until safe to return, I heard about one ship making an unplanned stop in New Orleans to re-provision the ship.

October -- several years ago.

We left Tampa and our first port for a Western Caribbean cruise was Key West. We were suppose to leave at 6 PM -- didn't happen. Finally we left at 8 PM and I noticed that we were going east instead of west. In a few minutes the captain came on and announced that Hurricane Paula was coming our way and we would be doing an Eastern Cruise.

Our second part of our cruise was also to be an Eastern cruise. But our captain was able to get a couple of different ports. So we repeated only a couple of ports.

If need be they'll go out to calmer seas. Better to ride it out there than in port. That's why the Navy always sends able ships out to sea if there is an impending hurricane.

The Norwegian Sky is departing Port of Miami right now (12:19 hrs) and "Marine Traffic" is showing its destination as :EVAC TO SAFE WATERS. MSC Divina and Carnival Sensation are heading shortly for Cozumel. The Norwegian Escape is still inbound to Miami.

Hurricane force winds might be experienced anywhere from 20 to 50 miles from the center - that 100 mile wide swath can generally be avoided by a cruise ship which can travel most likely at close to twice the speed of the storm - and with one day's notice can easily go almost 500 miles to find safer waters.

You're welcome. It's a great site to see where any cruise ships are anywhere in the world. You can find a ship in a specific port and then google their web cam and see what it looks like or the weather in that port from their bridge cams. Keeps me busy between cruises. ;p

Just know that Cruisemapper is not always correct. When a ship is out of range of a land based AIS station, most consumer AIS tracking sites (like marinetraffic) will list the ship as "out of range" and give the last known position. Cruisemapper will use the ship's itinerary to show where the ship is "supposed" to be, and in cases like this, where changes are made last minute due to weather or mechanical issues, Cruisemapper will frequently show an incorrect location.

Thank you for your attempt at a bit of humor at such a serious time.

We sailed to Bermuda 5 years ago from NYC. Left NY 4 hours before Sandy hit. Capt. went to Bermuda south between US coast and the storm. Very scary. We had an 8th floor corner balcony and took water under our sliders. Winds were 135 miles per hour and 40 ft seas.

. We the spent 3 sunny days in Bermuda.

My Daughter and her DH are on Carnival Splendor. Their Eastern Carib changed to Western. They were to sail back tomorrow to Debark Saturday in FLL. Instead they will be in Cozumel again (2nd time this Cruise) and spend Saturday and Sunday having Sea Days. When the Port has damage assessment and reopens they will return to Port Everglades. They are having a great time and their weather has been wonderful! They refunded all Internet Packages and now it is free and Unlimited. Gratuities for the extra days have been waived and phone lines are now open to call home! The Crew and Staff have been amazing!

Carnival did give the option a few days ago when Ship first Ported in Cozumel for anyone flying home they could. A few did because of wanting to board up homes in FL. Passengers have that option tomorrow!

During Sandy the Carnival Pride cancelled their Cruise and took shelter anchoring in Chesapeake Bay with only Crew onboard.
