Going to Brazil? Get the yellow fever vaccine. Better safe than sorry.

Recommended Posts

Agree. I got a yellow fever vaccine before my Brazil cruise several years ago. Not just better being safe than sorry, but some countries may refuse entry if they see your Brazilian tourist visa and you don't have the yellow card to show that you've gotten the vaccine

When I did my South American circumnavgation this year we were told by P&O 'No certificate (or exemption) then no boarding'. As it was a 65 day cruise I made sure I had the paper! Excellent cruise BTW.

Now all we have to do is get RCI to go to Brazil.:rolleyes:

They used to, up until a few years ago. Don't know why they stopped. I had a blast on my Brazil cruise & would go again in a second. Also wish they would resume the cruises around the horn of South America. That one is on my bucket list.

Celebrity goes around the horn and we are doing it next March. We are Diamond on RC so get Elite status on Celebrity. We went through Panama Canal last year on Celebrity and it was very nice.

Thanks for this info, I'll definitely check it out.

Yes once you have the vaccination it is now lifetime whereas only a few years ago it had to be renewed if after 10 years.

A lot of this comes down to whether or not it is required and other factors such as health situations (age is a factor as well as the ability to have a live virus vaccination) as to whether or not one would get it.

Well, 1990 would be the last time I had the shot and back then it was expensive tho' my employer paid for it :)

I got mine back in 2010 and it was $150 plus another $50 or $75 for the clinic visit. It was all out of pocket as insurance didn't cover it. Don't know what it costs now.

How can you possibly remember that?!?!?!? I got mine in 2008 and I couldn't tell you how much it cost if you put a gun to my head!

I think the reason why RCL pulled out of Brazil was because it wasn't profitable for them once they reached Brazilian waters. I remember on my NCL cruise last year from Buenos Aires to Rio, they made announcements to buy everything before getting into Brazilian waters because of the mandatory taxes they imposed on every purchase, even services like the spa. I dont frequent the casino on ships too often, but I do believe the casino was also closed once we reached Brazil. So I don't see RCL returning until things change. NCL has also stopped doing this itinerary as well so I guess its not a profitable destination for the cruise lines.

Unless something has changed in the last 13 years, you do not need the yellow fever shot unless you are going to the Amazon region. We flew into Rio via São Paulo and visited Iquazu and we were not required to get the yellow fever shot.

Even back then we took our around the horn cruise on another cruise line, HAL.

A lot of countries won't let you in if you don't have the Yellow Fever Vax, no matter where in Brasil you have visited.

Precisely why I got my YF vaccine. It wasn't required for my cruise but I didn't want to risk being denied entry to another country.

Obviously if you have renewed your passport and the new one does not include your Brazilian Visa it is a non issue. But it is a known fact that people have been denied entry into some countries (China for one) if they have a Brazilian Visa in their passport and no proof of a YF vaccine. Don't know why you feel the need to attack just because you chose not to get the vaccine while some of us did.

Attack? Overly sensitive much?

I am just not a fan of being driven to do something because some anchor on TV (AKA boobtube) is telling me that if I don’t do something that the sky will fall.

I was attacked in this forum back in 2014 for telling people that I used my passport to take a cruise with less than six months remaining on my passport. Unlike the people who attacked me, I went to the countries of destination (Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Austria) after getting boilerplate information from Avalon Waterways that I had to have 6 months on my passport about 3 weeks before leaving. Each country required 3 months. I was told unequivacably here that I would be denied the cruise. I knew I wouldn’t and yet member after member told me to pay the expedite fee or I would be denied. I knew I would be allowed to fly, and I knew if I was walking the streets of Romania that the cruise ship would put me aboard.

I am just naturally not given to herd mentality. I travel independently for a very good reason. I am not someone who just listens to someone tell me I can or can’t do something without me doing my own research and I trust my ability to read a lot more than many members of this or any other forum.

That said, the OP of this thread is a great resource and I trust her more than the anchor on the TV link she provided.

Further, If after going to Brazil and if I read that without a yellow fever vaccination I could not go to China, I would have simply gone and got the vaccination then. No reason to do it before I would plan to go to China.

No, I'm not overly sensitive. But I don't like being talked down to as if I'm some uneducated baffoon who believes everything he hears. Like you, I always do my research when visiting someplace new. Hence my decision to get a YF vax. You never know where your travels might take you. I've been fortunate enough to travel to five continents and will continue to explore the world. Just want to make sure I have all the bases covered.

I spent $180 (including clinic fee) for YF in 1991 before going to India. I renewed in 2003 in Cairo Egypt for 1 Egyptian Pound, then equal to 18 US cents!

What has changed recently are a number of YF cases in SP and Rio of locals who had not been to suspect areas. This has led to increased attention to the issue.

I have found the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to be a good source of reliable information about vaccines. Here's their yellow fever vaccine page:

https://www.cdc.gov/yellowfever/vaccine/index.html

I want to flag something Keith mentioned above -- for people over 60, the yellow fever vaccine may cause serious health problems (as the CDC notes) and may be contraindicated. Our travel doctor alerted us to this a couple of years ago.

In terms of traveling to a country that bars entry if you're arriving from a country where there is a risk of yellow fever, the CDC Travelers' Health section is great for getting that info as well. Start here, and do a search for the country/countries to which you are traveling:

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/

(BTW, for China, the CDC says: "There is no risk of yellow fever in China. The government of China requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. This does not include the US. If you are traveling from a country other than the US, check this list to see if you may be required to get the yellow fever vaccine: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission." Note that this does not say that you can't visit China if you've ever been to a country with yellow fever risk and have not been vaccinated, only if you are arriving from a country on that list.)
