LIVE from the STAR PRINCESS - SANTIAGO TO RIO - FEB. 23, 2011

Pia, Looks like you have great lecturers with John Maxtone-Graham in addition to Joe May!
I agree! Two of the very best. I've had Joe on several cruises; he's a port lecturer, not a shopping guide nor does he tout certain stores. Refreshing. Like Pia, I have an autographed copy of John Maxtone-Graham's book. :) You hit pay dirt with these two, Pia.

Friday morning and the seas have calmed down a bit. Sun is shining and temp is 55. We had lots of daylight yesterday, somewhat like Alaska. The sun didn’t set until about 8:45 PM. Today sun didn’t come up until almost 8:00. This I don’t care for at all. As anticipated, we did nothing after dinner except go back to the cabin to watch another movie. This one was “The Rebound” with Catherine Zeta Jones. I fell asleep. Mike will have to tell me about the last 20 minutes.

The TV problem with Spanish movie channels did straighten out and now they have a dedicated channel for Spanish language programming. Their movie du jour is Robin Hood. Also, I just realized we have another CD; Matias. He runs a Spanish Wake Show at the same time Frank does his. Wish I could understand Matias, because Frank is boring.

Today we will again have lectures by both Joe May and John Maxtone-Graham, a sushi buffet at the Calypso pool and a full day of “The Other Guys” with Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg on MUTS. They will have four showings starting at 2:00 PM and going on until midnight. The afternoon movie in the theater will be “You Again” with Kristen Bell and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Since the same shows as yesterday will be repeated tonight, you can guess where we will probably spend our evening. Then again, it’s smoke free in the casino, so perhaps we will give them another chance.

Dawn: gym has 12 treadmills; 6 ellips. I think Pre-cor. Time is in Km. ; need to learn how to change it to miles.

Ok Cal: will try harpist. Yes....same guy.

Catch you later.

Pia...did they have regular Trivia matches on the Patters? You are obviously well read....I bet your and your husband would win.

Princess should give you a free cruise. I bet everyone reading your posts has already looked up the sailing dates...prices...etc. of the cruise you are on for next year.

Stupid me. I thought when one was on a ship in Central and Latin American, visa were not reguired. Apparently I was wrong. Does each nation The Star visits....reguire a visa?

Happy Sailings.

I also love to "travel" with Pia. But, I am having trouble figuring out the time difference. What is the difference between where you are and the east coast of US??? I love the Star and can't wait to see the changes. You take the best cruises. I am very jealous. Just waiting for my husband to have back surgery next week and when that is over I am booking 2 cruises over the rest of the year! Again, thanks so much for taking the time to take us with you.

Based on what Pia said in her 1st post, Santiago was 2 hours ahead of EST. It was 6:30 when she posted and it was 4:30 EST here. I don't know if there is a time change as the Star cruises along but Pia is usually pretty good at keeping us informed about the time changes.:)

Except for Montevideo, Uruguay all ports should be 2 hours ahead of EST.

Hi Pia

I hope you have better luck then we did last year with weather ..left VALPO late and subsequently arrived VEry late in all ports or just did not make it in others ...not too impressed!!!We were plagued with Bad Weather

In USHUAII it poured BUCKETS The whole place was really cloud covered ...so much so we never saw the ANDES mountains .....right there ...right behind the town I saw them in an AGENDA I purchased ....Never saw them on that day ...WHO KNEW!!!!

WE did a boat ride to the BEAGLE CHANNEL I do not remember ever being that wet despite 2 raincoat.Talk about soaked to the bone!!!!Plus a major snafu with tendering ....delayed disembarcation by hours....... RIDICULOUS!!!!

I really hope your cruise will be A LOT better than ours

At least ENJOY the TANGO dancers in the Atrium .How they manage to do all those acrobatics in our seas is nothing short of MIRACULOUS ....mOst of us could not even walk straight that;s how much we rocked and rolled ...plus I had an aft balcony ...Roll roll roll SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE ..non stop!!!!LOLYou could feel your whole body jiggle jiggle if you laid down

MY son and I had a good laugh at that!!!

Enjoy

Michele

I feel like I'm almost sailing with you. Actually sailing with you would be much better! We have friends on your cruise... if you meet Anita and Ian from Sydney, Australia, say hi from Sandy. You'll like them, they're lots of fun. And, thanks for posting the temps.

you are such a good Canadian gal ;)

Pia are you staying onboard and doing the Transatlantic on her?

Not Pia, but looking at her signature, it seems she'll be on the Grand for her TA after dry dock. I hope she'll keep the Star safe and in good shape because DH and I will be on her for the TA.

378 days...wow, that is unbelievable! We got invited to the Most Traveled lunch on the Ocean in September and at that time I had 99 days (we were the last one invited!)...I told DH as we dined on great food and drank wine at Sabatinis to not get used to this, as I expect it will be a LONG time before we get invited to another again!!

Pia, enjoying your posts!

The day sure flies by. Seems I just posted at breakfast, and here it is dinner time. Morning lecture by Joe May and then trivia. We won. And lost. Yes, lost the tiebreaker and the chance of acquiring another passport wallet. Boo hoo. Sniff sniff. Since trivia is at 11:30 and Maxtone-Graham was scheduled for 1:00, there was really no time for lunch. His lecture today was on the Titanic; very different inasmuch as he had personally interviewed three of the survivors; a quartermaster, a stewardess, and a female passenger from France. Following that was the movie I mentioned earlier; You Again. Silly no brainer, but entertaining. By 4:30 we were starving, so grabbed a hamburger (me) and a hot dog (Mike) and took it back to our cabin to have with wine. No fries.

We are currently sitting in Vista Lounge waiting to hear the music of the harpist, Gerardo Dominguez. The reason for my netbook being here, is that the reception in my cabin s**** (Caribe forward) and satellite strength in aft locations (here and Horizon Ct is usually listed as excellent).

BTW, it is getting very cold and ship has started wiggling again. Also a few drizzles. Outside temp is listed as 54; feels a whole lot colder than that. Captain made an announcement that it will get colder tomorrow as we pass thru the Chilean fjords starting at 6:00 AM. I heard something like a high of 11 or 12C. Brrrrrrrrr………..way too cold for me. Also, the production show has been cancelled due to the heavy seas. I think the seas are milder than last night, but I suppose the dancers don’t think so.

See you in the AM.

P.S. Yes, we are staying on until FLL, but I will start another LIVE in Rio. As for conversion, I know how to do that, but when you are on a treadmill it's a lot easier not to have to convert. ;)

Sorry you are having poor WiFi in your cabin. We had C743 on our cruise and had quite good WiFi. Must be an issue on the Star with the forward cabins. Maybe the will upgrade during her November drydock.
