Laundry on ship - how do you pay?

The self serve laundromats are free of charge; there is a charge for detergent and if memory serves me it was a $1.00 for a small box (that does two loads).

On what ship? There has been a charge of $1 or $2 per load to wash and to dry on the Princess ships we have sailed.

The change machines are always empty and you probably have to stand in line at Customer Relations to get quarters. Go to the casino. There is usually a change machine and the casino cage can give you quarters.

I've never seen free washers and dryers on a Princess ship. At least $1.50 per load for both washer and dryer.

Others have said you can get quarters at the casino, also. I bring my own, and some extra too, because sometimes the machines would not take a certain coin.

You can also buy your laundry detergent in the laundry room. Again, I would not depend on the machines in there. I bring the Purell sheets.

I remember when they used to be free, bit it's been awhile. On Princess last year it was $1.00 a load. On our Dec. cruise it was $2.00 a load, washer and dryer.

I just used the change machine in the laundry room, but you can get quarters at the purser's desk too. I bring the sheets (name escapes me) that have booth detergent and softener in them.

They are "Purex 3-in-1" sheets......:):):)

You definitely have to pay. Pretty sure it's $2. Detergent is available for purchase however you might want to bring some from home along with a dryer sheet or two. We always bring about $10 in quarters and a small jar of laundry detergent.

Irons and ironing boards are also available in the laundry room and they are free.

Before our last cruise - I was confused when people said $2 for wash and dry...thinking for both. But please know it is $2 for wash - and $2 for dry.

I also used the 3-in1 sheets. A little warning. It seemed the washer did not have as much water in the washer as we do at home....when we put the clothes in the dryer...residue from the sheet was left on some of the clothes...not all, just certain materials.

What worked for us was tearing the sheet in half for the washer....and sometime we didn't use it for the dryer.

We brought a roll of quarters with us and also some laundry detergent and a scoop in a zip lock bag. We brought a large plastic bag to serve as a dirty laundry bag and also a large pillow case to transport the clean laundry back to our room for folding. Doing our laundry on the ship was quite easy. There are also irons and ironing boards in the laundry room if you want to iron something.

I've heard this too, but so far I haven't had a problem with it.

And yes, it is $2 now for washing and another $2 (per load) for drying. The good news is that the dryer actually gets everything dry in one cycle.

We were on the Emerald in November which was followed by the Crown. I took quarters.

I also bought some powdered detergent (which i just finished using). I took the detergent,

wipes for drying and quarters. I had heard some negatives about the 3 in 1. Since we

were driving, space was no concern. It worked very well. Not crowded at all. But, we

washed in the morning(8) of a 9 oclock prt call. However, all but 1 of the washers on our

floor was busy. I took a book to read (our cabin was at the opposite end).

Enjoy your cruise.

If you buy your quarters at the Purser's Desk and have any left over, make sure you check to see if they are all "real" quarters before leaving the ship. Several times I have found Princess quarters (same size as real quarters) in the roll. They work in the washers/dryers on board but useless at home :o Have several left over to use on our next cruise.

I also received "Princess tokens" mixed with real quarters when I have bought a roll of quarters from the purser's desk......haven't used the self serve laundry in 3 or 4 years, since we are Elite

I still do our nicer blouses/shirts (not formal) in the laundry. Princess messed up two of my casual tee shirts so do those type of clothes myself. So just send things I don't care if they might shrink or the seams get messed up.

I think now the OP knows that there is a charge. But would like to add, if you decide to go back to your cabin, make sure you get back in time to remove your clothes from either the washer or dryer. It did not happen to me but I have seen others just take the clothes out and dump them on top of other appliances.:( This would happen as soon as the buzzer went off.

One persons clothes were still damp and when she returned to the laundry room within minutes of the buzzer, a verbal tirade began. :( In hindsight it is now kind of funny, but I got out of there quickly.....:D

I was on cruise few years back where a fight broke out in laundry

One couple asked to leave ship at next port

Can get very xyz in laundry at times

Only problem I've had on multiple trips at laundry is the soap dispensor taking my money and not giving soap - 3 dif cruises - taking my own soap from now on becuase it's a pain to run down to pursers - get refund and try to find a machine that works !!!!!!!! pain !!!!!!!!! expecially when you see a crew member come in get soap and leave - not sure how they did it but did - one women lost over $7 between soap despensor & washer

Anyway - did see a couple with sheet that included soap & softer in one - i will go that route next time.

hope this helps

I, like previous posters, do take the 3 in 1 sheets but I tear off the softener portion and use normal dryer sheets in the dryer. Didn't want any problems with residue that some users have had.

Another to - be sure to check the faceplate of the iron before using it! I used one that had sticky black gunk on it that never did come ot of the pants I was ironing :(
