Another couple booted....

Recommended Posts

I'm curious too about why they would have been escorted off and left. but, I don't think we'll ever find out.
We could guess that it was bad behavior, but for all we know, it was a death in the family or some such, and they just needed to leave right away.

I know someone who has missed the ship in Key West because of a few too many at the bars ... I can tell you that the fine was most definitely passed on.
I have no doubt they'll try. I'm just saying that if the passengers were kicked off as opposed to leaving voluntarily, actually collecting it may not be so easy.

If they used a credit card to set up their on board account, the cruise lines bills the credit card on record. Not sure what would happen if the on board account was a cash account.

Or maybe they had $600 dollars of OBC that they needed to use up.:D

Ahhhh, how intriguing..... I look forward to our "supersleuth's" investigation. :)

As am I! :D

Ask and you shall receive. ;)

The couple were removed from the ship for personal use marijuana. They were not criminally charged, but were issued a $500 civil fine by CBP.

I can't believe they weren't arrested and they were still kicked off the ship!! They deserve a refund and compensation!! ;)

Thanks for the update Paul! :)

It's the cruise line that gets fined, and I'm guessing in a case like this, they'll have a hard time getting reimbursed for it from the passengers.

Not at all. They'll just bill their credit card on file. The couple can dispute the charge, but I don't think they would succeed.

Actually, another cruise line, Holland or Norweigian, I cannot remember does Catalina cruises from California, but they go to Ensinada to make it legal.

Carnival has a R/T from Long Beach that stops in Ensenada and Catalina. Princess has coastal cruises with all CA stops except for Ensenada. RCI used to have a Catalina/San Diego/Ensenada run, R/T from LA.

If you are really interested in the nitty gritty of the PVSA and its application, and have nothing better to do, look at the Code of Federal Regulations, 19 CFR 4.80a.

Don't give me any more credit than I deserve. This was easy. Like Aurelius180 said, it's in my back yard. The guys taking the action are all friends of mine (and co-workers ;)).

Sorry to talk about the PVSA here, but it looks like the Disney Wonder thinks they have found a way around it. Some passengers doing a B2B on May 14...LA to Vancouver then Vancouver (to Alaska), ending in Seattle.

There were a couple of threads about it, but Disney said it's not in violation of the PVSA, since passengers will disembark, go through customs in Canada, and then reboard. Some have also been told that they need to pack everything to disembark in Vancouver, and can't have the same room for the 2nd trip.

So, if Disney thinks that this is legal, this will open the gates for all the other cruise lines that have made passengers cancel legs that were in violation in the past. This will be interesting.

There have been some threads before discussing B2B cruises and I believe it was RCI that would not book people B2B on certain cruises for this exact reason. So apparently not all the cruise lines agree with Disney. But if Disney wants to run the risk and stand good for the potential fine then more power to them.

Totally agree with you on what the law says, but would point out that Celebrity Century sails out of San Diego to Hawaii with the only foreign port visited being Ensenada (for 5 hours), only 75 miles south of San Diego. So I'm not sure how "distant" is defined.

I would guess that Ensenada is distant from Hawaii.

My first cruise was in the early '90s on American Hawaii Cruise line. The 7-day cruise started and ended on Oahu, and visited no foreign ports, just several of the other Hawaiian islands (Kauai, Maui, & the Big Island). I was certainly not aware of this law at the time, and I'm not sure how they managed to do this without being penalized.

I believe those were American registered, not foreign registered.

American Hawaii used ships that were US flagged. Thus, they were exempt from such restrictions. NCL America does the same thing now. Of course ... they have their own special restrictions about the ship and staffing.

And US minimum wage laws apply, I think.

Maybe about ten years ago, we were on a cruise on NCL leaving from NY. Met a couple on the first night, with a brother as a third pasenger, who was jumping ship in Port Canvneral (first port), near where he lived. He did, Don't know if he told them. He had carry on only. No annoucements that day for missing passengers, nothing. Asked the couple why and they said his fare (299) with meals and a day at sea was worth it to him. Bet it happens more than anyone is aware. Does the cruise line turn themselves in if that happens? I doubt it.
