cruzn buckeye Posted September 1, 2012 #226 Share Posted September 1, 2012 If you pay your 15% gratuity upfront with the perday charge, you may be paying tips for drinks that you don't have on those heavy port cruises... On the other hand, if the tips are added at the end on your sail and sign... it might not be a nice surprise at the end...
jules815 Posted September 1, 2012 #227 Share Posted September 1, 2012 I hope we start seeing some posts from fellow cruisers who have purchased the program. For our upcoming cruise, it seems like something we would all benefit from. Of course, they would have to offer it on Dream, too. :) Also, does anyone have a current Carnival bar menu pdf available? I know there's one out there that Zydeco posted, but do we know if the prices on that one are current?
katiel53 Posted September 1, 2012 #228 Share Posted September 1, 2012
@sternfanla that is a really good question...i would like to know too! That would be an extra 8-9% for Charleston port!!!
John Heald posted on his facebook page that if the package were purchased while in port or within I think, not sure, 6 miles of the port taxes would be applied. I went back to look for his post, but I think it was in answer to a question and I couldn't find it quickly. He also stated that the gratuity is based on the $42.95 and NOT for whatever the drink cost is. Think about it the same as buying the soda package. The tip is based on the daily price not per soda. lillian marie Posted September 1, 2012 #229 Share Posted September 1, 2012 I would be so hung over and sick if I drank $40 of booze a day.
Cruisegirl6 Posted September 1, 2012 #230 Share Posted September 1, 2012 Liquor/cocktails are more expensive on Carnival than other cruise lines, the drinks that I drink that are not even top end shelf brands (such as Kettle One) are all $8.95 plus graduity each. I drink Sky and it's much cheaper and when mixed, who cares?

megs1954 Posted September 2, 2012 #236 Share Posted September 2, 2012 My nephew got off the Splendor this morning. I asked if he bought the liquor card. He said no. He said it wasn't worth it. I guess it's on the Splendor unless he was referring to something else. I didn't verify it was the same program. He had two other adults in his cabin and he didn't say why it wasn't worth it. cathyz Posted September 2, 2012 #237 Share Posted September 2, 2012
I wonder though if you purchase the package and they have your money, what incentive do they have to hustle to get your order for you. If you pay one by one, they seem to work harder to please you so you'll continue to buy drinks. Just a thought
You'll probably still have to sign a receipt for their inventory/control purposes so would know which server served you for tip and/or credit purposes. When DH started getting the free drinks in the casino last cruise, he still had to sign receipts, even tho they were for $0 and no tip.

DnR Posted September 3, 2012 #240 Share Posted September 3, 2012 i wish it was not that everyone in the cabin over 21 had to buy the card. It would be great for my husband, but I am not medically able to drink alcohol, so I would have to buy something I would never use - therefore, it becomes way too expensive. What about pregnant women? Recovering alcoholics with spouses that drink? They should have opt outs with a doctor's note.
coevan Posted September 3, 2012 #241 Share Posted September 3, 2012 I understand your point, but how would Carnival monitor cheaters?
hailey256 Posted September 3, 2012 #242 Share Posted September 3, 2012 I would be so hung over and sick if I drank $40 of booze a day. My thought is that they may water down the mixed drinks. A lot of bars do this with their Happy Hour prices. Just remember that we are doing a lot of guessing here. We need to wait for folks that have actually used this program. I will still buy my bottle Liquor on line.

It was not my experience on Celebrity that drinks were watered down, however. Carnival might be different though, who knows. I suppose you could order your liquor as a shot with your mixer on the side as a chaser, then mix it yourself.
Eating wanderlust Posted March 23, 2013 #244 Share Posted March 23, 2013 I totally agree, at $42-$47 a day per person that's not that many drinks. We are on vacation and we like to drink while on vacation. After a couple mimosas, frosty drinks by the pool, wine at dinner, couple cocktails at a late night lounge that adds up fast, guaranteed more than $47. We are cruising with friends and we drink. Of course it doesn't make since for beer drinkers or non-drinkers, or one cocktail a day drinkers. And why people think a program like this will lead to belligerent drinkers who have to drink up because they paid for it, really??? Come on, you really can't be that ignorant, unless you are the type that stays at a buffet all day cuz you paid for an all-you-can-eat. Carnival isn't forcing this on anyone, it either works for you or not. Why judge Carnival or others because you don't like something.
